Wednesday Notes: Ernie Sims, Dewayne White Return to Practice
- Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, Ernie Sims, and Dewayne White all practiced on Tuesday. Kalvin Pearson and Daniel Loper were out with injuries.
- Ko Simpson was placed on IR last week and replaced on the roster by Jahi Word-Daniels.
- Jim Schwartz didn't have a problem with Louis Delmas' hit on Jermichael Finley because some things you just can't coach differently.
- According to Chad Ochocinco, Bengals receivers want the ball to be thrown 50 times against the Lions on Sunday. While that would probably be good for a few of my fantasy teams, the thought of Carson Palmer throwing 50 times against the Lions' secondary is just scary.
- The Lions are causing ticket-selling problems for the Bengals, who are having trouble reaching a sellout for Sunday's game.
- Similar to Matthew Stafford against Cleveland, Brett Favre was mic'd up against the Lions last month. As much as I can't stand Favre still being in the division, I have to say, it was pretty entertaining to listen to what he had to say throughout the game, including when he chatted with Stafford before kickoff and after the final whistle. My favorite part of the segment was when Stephen Peterman lined up at defensive tackle and Favre noticed and said, "Damn, Stephen. What they got you in for?" Favre quickly snapped the ball after the remark and Adrian Peterson ran into the end zone for a touchdown. Favre then went over to Peterman and asked if they are paying him overtime. It was just a funny exchange, though there were many in the video.
- Citing the fact that "everybody's a little different," Jim Schwartz didn't want to even guess how long Brandon Pettigrew's ACL injury could keep him out.

Ochocinco's comments are not surprising
One would have to be a complete idiot not to want to throw against the 32nd ranked pass defense in the NFL. Any good team will look to take advantage of another team’s weakness. I just hope we can pull this one out – Cincy is not invincible by any means and I really think we have a chance. I’ll be excited to watch for sure this Sunday!!! GO LIONS!!!

Brett Favre is a class act on the field
Nobody can take that away from him…..however, he is a braying jackass drama queen during the offseason, and that is what I dislike about him. Of course, getting killed by him for years and years has not been fun either, but as a football player (without regard to team colors) I like him. He is fun to watch, and that is all there is to it….:o)
Agreed
It was cool listening to what he said to Stafford. I bet Stafford was in awe more than anything.

Oh yeah....
I forgot to say….I hope the Bengals play like they did against the Browns when they play us this weekend. If they do, we will win the game.
The thing that worries me is....
The Bengals struggled against the Raiders and Browns, two teams they should easily beat, so you’d think they’d wake up against us….I’m hoping they don’t, but those are the things I worry about. However, I think we have a chance, but, a LOT of things have to go our way.

actually, as a bengals fan, i can sure you that they in no way struggled against the browns. they dominated the game, and the 16 points were more by design than lack of execution. the bengals controlled the ball for over 38 minutes, and were within fifteen yards of having two separate 100-yard rushers in the same game. they focused on maintaining drives rather than scoring points, which led to the fact that the browns offense only managed to really move the ball on two drives in the game (their first drive of the game and the drive when they scored the touchdown). peter king can spin it how he wants, but the game really wasn’t close.
as for the raiders game, that’s where the lions can look for a formula to beat the bengals, although it relied mostly on the bengals turning the ball over five times (i think that was the total); other than that, the boys in stripes mostly controlled that game. were it not for a costly fumble by andre caldwell on a late kickoff return, they probably still would have pulled out the victory in overtime.
i think your team’s time is coming, but i just don’t think it’ll be sunday.
i'm going to go america all over your ass!
crap, in that first sentence i meant to say “assure” instead of “sure”. sorry, that was a bit weed-tarded.

Good point.....
I just thought that Cincinnati’s offense was a little off in that game vs Cleveland…..maybe I just imagined it, but we scored 38 on them. However, we definitely do not have a Nnamdi Asomugha in our defensive backfield. I do not honestly see us winning this game, but I can (and do) have hope. One thing is for sure, the Lions have a better run defense than either Cleveland (29th against the run) or Oakland (31st against the run). We are 19th against the run, but we are the worst in the league against the pass (32nd). I think the Lions will force the Bengals to beat them in the air. Nobody on the Bengal’s offense scored a TD against Oakland, except for Carson Palmer (2 rushing….1 INT and 0 passing TDs). Scott had a decent day with 119 yards and the Bengals did control the TOP.
Against Cleveland, the Bengals had almost the exact same time of possession as they did against the Raiders (just over 38 minutes). However, they simply could not finish drives (They were 1 for 3 in the red zone) and Carson Palmer threw the ball 2 more time in that game than he did vs Oakland (13-24 for 110 and 1 TD 0 INT vs CLE and 14-22 for 207 and 0 TD 1 INT vs Oakland). Oakland has a far superior pass defense to Cleveland’s defense….and yet the Bengals only managed 97 more yards passing? I guess you could chalk that up to the 40 rushing attempts between LJ and Scott, and the determination of Marvin Lewis to “pound the rock”, but I think there has to be more to it than just wanting to run the ball to eat up clock.
Are the Bengals worried about Carson Palmer’s shoulder? Are they playing it conservative because of that, or is it simply that Palmer is not the same QB he once was? I’m game…..let’s find out if he can still throw the ball 50+ times in a game and git r done. He should be able to throw all day on the Lions. If he can’t……that’s where my hope comes into play….;o) I think the Bengals will have a much more difficult time running against the Lions than they did against the Raiders or Browns…..so my bet is that they will either win by proving that Palmer still has it, or they will lose because he doesn’t (I for one think he probably still has it….but am hoping that he doesn’t….lol).
i’d say the biggest problem in the passing game against the browns was the depth of their safeties, which is one of the reasons that lj and b-scott were able to run so much all day — cleveland had their safeties lining up about 20 yards deep at the snap on literally every play. they came in determined that the bengals wouldn’t throw against them, to their detriment; in all honesty, to me, carson has seemed to be in the best physical shape of his career this season, despite what some fans who don’t understand coaches’ philosophies and gameplans will tell you. marvin lewis has been saying for a while that he wants to be a smashmouth team, which is how you win in the afc north, and he finally accomplished his goal this year. that being said, you are correct that our red zone offense has been inept the last couple games, but i think that’s more aberration than trend, because prior to the last game against pittsburgh our red zone offense had only not scored a touchdown twice all season, i think (it might not have actually beeen that often, but certainly felt so).
not to say you’re wrong about your run defense vs. your pass defense, but i’d still expect a heavy diet of cedric benson were i on the detroit side; the baltimore defense hadn’t allowed a 100-yard rusher in 40 games, and ced did it to them twice this year. marvin lewis wants ced to run it 25+ a game, and will stop at nothing to have that happen. also, bob bratkowski isn’t known for coming into games with offensive gameplans that prey on an opponent’s weakness.

Chad can get targeted 50 times....
As long as he only catches 1 or 2.

as much as i'd like to be optimistic
ced benson will be back, larry johnson did well last week and they have bernard scott as well. Add palmer and ocho cinco and you have a recipe for decimating our awful defense. Barring something amazing from stafford or a handful of turnovers from the no-longer Bungles, I see another long day for the lions. With that said, the previous close calls for the bengals against oakland and the browns make me think the lions +13 is a decent bet, for you degenerates out there.
+1
I would never bet on the Lions either

I won a Yahoo Survivor pool last year by picking the Lions opponent in every game that I could
So sometimes it doesn’t hurt to bet against them. Plus, I saw 0-16 coming after 3 games.
What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.
NYC
you said earlier you think we have a chance. based on your advice, I think we’ll be able to stay within 2 touchdowns… besides, it’s a recession, vegas could use a few more of my dollars
Stumpy
What’s the line?? Is it still 13?? If I HAD TO BET and the line is Det +13 away from FOFI I would take the Lions to cover. Since I don’t have to gamble on our Lions and I never, ever trust the Lions with a spread I will stay on the sidelines once again.
