Short-term Memory

A new trend on the boards, new what the fuck am I talking about new. Since week four, the draft buzz has been all aflutter here on POD and a lot of you a talking about Nmadeasomguwkiwanukajustintuck Suh possibly becoming the newest member of our pride. The argument is that even if we do end up with the second overall pick there is NO WAY St. Louis can pass on this instant defensive starter.

For those of you that forget, we did.

Aaron Curry was supposed to be an instant upgrade to an anemic run defense, and if Schwartz and Mayhew were serious about changing the culture in Detroit we would have to go defense. And we chose Matthew Stafford, the quarterback, the building block needed for every franchise.

Yes I understand that my arguments are speculative and comparative, and that the St. Louis Rams are not on the clock, and haven't even written the words "draft board" yet, but please do not be surprised if Suh falls in our lap at number two, if we stay there, and please do not be surprised if we don't choose Suh and go offensive line, these are things that happen, and will continue to happen.

The only person you should talk about and feel bad for is Sam Bradford. The man who RAN back to college so that the Lions would not draft him, and now, if what I predict will happen, happens, Him and Nelly will be all snuggly together in St. Louis, Have Fun in Hell Bradford.

’Him and Nelly will be all snuggly together in St. Louis"

Nice. Although I totally disagree… Bradford probably won’t go in the first round. If Brady Quinn sat nearly through the entire first round, a guy with multiple injuries to his arm at the QB position who didn’t to play this year certainly won’t go #1. If anyone at QB goes first, I think it’ll be McCoy.

true

i just wanted to take a shot at bradford, still sore at rescinding his name for the draft when he heard the lions were interested.

by IAmGross on Dec 21, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

It's going to be Clausen to the Rams

They are in love with him for some reason…..lol

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, Clausen to the Rams.......for these reasons

http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2010jclausen.php
Pro-style QB, excellent all-around skills, quick release, etc, etc. Reminds some of Matt Ryan. In a draft with a lot of good college QB’s, Clausen is the one who most looks like a pro QB.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 23, 2009 3:46 AM EST up reply actions

McCoy?!? McCoy?!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

Wow. The guy will be lucky to get into the first round let alone the top pick.

As far as the Detroit analogy goes, I think it is valid to the extent that St. Louis needs the best QB available to get them out of this mess they are in [last three season wins: three. two, one?].
Although they may go the Miami/Parcells direction and take the BPA at #1 [Suh, Berry, Okung] and grab their QB to be in Round Two. Who might be McCoy or someone else who falls.

As far as the Lions drafting Curry, there was a majority of fans who wanted him, but almost every draft guru had Detroit taking Staff. LBs are terrible value that early in the draft. Looking back, who would you say got it right?

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 21, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

I don't get why you say that about McCoy

I’m not a fan of his or anything, but QB’s are absolutely overvalued. Not to mention the guy finished 3rd in Heisman voting, has a winning attitude and mindset… I highly doubt he makes it out of the 1st round.

If GM’s are saying TEBOW isn’t going to make it past 20 or so, I definitely think McCoy is in play.

by Nate D. on Dec 21, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

also

didn’t McCOy set the NCAA record with the highest completion % ever?

That makes him pretty accurate, and IMO accuracy is more important than arm strngth in the NFL.

Think Drew Brees.

I get what you're saying

But in terms of talent on the college level, Suh is a million times ahead of Curry.

and im my opinion

Berry is a Million times better than Suh, but I would be surprised if Mayhew’s first move is not to protect stafford with a REAL McCoy….badum ching.

by IAmGross on Dec 21, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

Uh oh Grossman......

I think you ate some of those “special” berries that you weren’t supposed to eat…..because you are definitely trippin if you think that Berry is better than Suh by any means.

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

i am biased

i always appreciate secondary talent over d-lineman. Dominant dbacks are a rarity these days.

by IAmGross on Dec 22, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

I'll give Suh the nod as the Best Player in the 2010 Draft.....

But I’ll go with Berry as the #2 defensive player, maybe even the #2 player overall. He’s got a lot of the same talents as Delmas, among others.

I'm gonna go ahead and say Suh will be there at #2......

Once again it all boils down to what the #1 pick will be paid…..there has not been a DT worth a #1 pick since before it happened the last time (1994….Dan Wilkinson…..NOT worth it). The Rams SHOULD do what most teams would do with the #1 pick….take the guy that will give them the most long term value (I know, I argued for the Lions to take Curry, but that was because I felt that the QBs in this coming draft would be better than the ones available in 2009). Mark my words…..if the Rams think that Clausen, Bradford, McCoy, or any other QB available has what it takes to be a “franchise” QB, they will draft him if they have the #1 pick.

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

+1

We did it, and the Rams likely will, too. Mark my words too.

Could happen

We may like Okung more…or Berry….

by Hyperion Ecta on Dec 21, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

possible....maybe Eric Berry, not Okung

With our OL contracts, actions in the 2009 Draft, and the mention earlier this year of “continuity on the OL”, I’m guessing we only pick a LG in the 2010 Draft, and therefore don’t take Okung. So if we pass on Suh, the only obvious alternative, IMO, is Eric Berry. Don’t know enough about Morgan yet, and wary of late fast-risers. IMO,
It’s either gonna be Suh or Berry (if Berry declares, which I think he will).

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 21, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

Q for GR

do you think there’s a chance that Okung would play LG for a couple of years, and then shift outside after he gets the hang of things?

The Schwartz was quoted earlier this year saying that he didn’t think it was a difficult transition between T & G, and according to Kdawg, Okung has some experience at LG.

If not, iupati in the second round?

Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson

by footstock on Dec 21, 2009 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

Was not aware of that quote by Schwartz

So yes, that increases the possibility of getting Okung. Schwartz also made some comment early in the year about liking continuity on the OL. He also talked about position felxibility, but that might have been more about the defense than the OL, I don’t know. Mostly, I’ve been watching the continuity (when healthy) at:

LT Backus
C Raiola
RG Peterman
RT Cherilus

So I guess it comes to a gut feeling. What does Schwartz value/trust more: continuity or the ability of a player to transition from LG to LT? My guess is Schwartz would prefer a bird in the hand over 2 in the bush, go the safe route, and take Suh in the 1st (90%+ sure he will be there at #2), and Iupati in the 2nd if he’s there.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 21, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

(and from LT back to LG in the pros, then back again to LT)

My gut says for continuity on the OL, Schwartz would prefer to stick a young player in one spot and leave him there. He’s certainly done that with the other 4 starters. Not a hint of moving Gosder to LG or any of that stuff.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 21, 2009 11:49 PM EST up reply actions

i my self rather draft a LG in 2nd or 3rd

then draft a LT in 1st or 2nd next year.. that way we get a good LG to help our rookie LT

if we get the LT 1st we will be in the same hoal we are in now where the LT looks worse then he really is b/c he has to do his job and help the LG job

by det32 on Dec 21, 2009 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

watch the clips of when backes

“F’ed up” more offten then not the LG fed up and backes is left with 2 guys to block.. so he goes to the guy on the inside and makes the guy on out side run a round him b/c that is all he can do.. hard to block 2 guys by your self.. thats why the staff says he is haveing his best year ever b/c they are relising that it is the G falt more then it is his

by det32 on Dec 21, 2009 11:56 PM EST up reply actions

Not a bad idea

Although I still think we’ll need defensive help in the future…

Multiple knee injuries and surgeries..

might make Suh less popular if he gets injured again. This is according to walterfootball.. If its true then it is possible Suh could be a bust due to busted knees.

#81

by UKLion on Dec 21, 2009 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I read that too. Not hearing anyone else talk about it though.

Just wait until the month before the draft and everyone will be put under the microscope. Then they will make him sound like a paraplegic.

I know there are more than a few here who do not want to hear much good about Gerald McCoy, but he started and played in thirty-nine straight games at Oklahoma. Make it forty in their upcoming bowl game. No injury issues.

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 21, 2009 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

Jeff Backus has started every game since 2001

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 21, 2009 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, his best quality.

Looking at everyone on the injury list for the Lions this year, don’t you wish more of them were like Jeff Backus?

Back to your concern about the Lions not taking him. If they don’t I have to believe that will be because they know more than me about Suh and what the best value is for the Lions at the #2 pick.
Personally, the only way they pass on Suh at #2 is because they trade down.
