Monday Notes: Decision on This Week's Starting QB to Be Made by Wednesday

  • Jim Schwartz didn't make it sound like Matthew Stafford will be back this week, but that isn't a guarantee by any means.  If Stafford is out, though, the coaches will have to decide if Daunte Culpepper or Drew Stanton will start, and as of right now no decision has been made.  The players will know by Wednesday, and I'm hoping they will learn that Stanton will finally get a chance to start.  The fact of the matter is that the offense scored points with Stanton in the game.  Yes, he made some mistakes, but he played better than Culpepper in my opinion.  Plus, Stanton deserves a chance to get some experience.  What is the point in playing Culpepper at this point?  I think Stanton has just as good of a chance of leading the Lions to victory as Culpepper, so there really doesn't seem to be any point in not getting him more experience if Stafford can't go.
  • Dan Gronkowski cleared waivers and was signed to the practice squad.  Terrance Taylor, who was just signed last week, was released to make room for Gronkowski.
  • Kevin Smith was scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews in Alabama today, and he said he doesn't want to leave without having surgery.
  • Louis Delmas was pissed off after the Lions' loss yesterday, to say the least.
  • Drew Stanton shared his thoughts on yesterday's game on his blog.

Louis Delmas
Delmas scowled at approaching reporters in the locker room after Sunday’s 31-24 loss to Arizona. He lost his composure. He flipped over a chair.
“We lost!” Delmas yelled at reporters. “What you want? What you got to ask me?”
Delmas stared at reporters defiantly.
“That’s what I thought,” he said.

This is the guy I want leading this defense. He cares about winning, makes plays, and he’s got that inner fire. No complacency here. No quietly accepting defeat. No B.S. about reviewing film and working on technique, like Dennis Northcutt tried to snow us with last week. No giving up. Delmas is quickly becoming my favorite Lion on D.

“I don’t really pay attention to the record, because if I did, I’d probably kill myself,” he said. “I just pay attention to the game. But obviously once you’re losing, you’re not going to see no smile on this face or nothing.”

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

He is so awesome

My next jersey will have Delmas on the back.

Delmas should be pissed...

…it means he will continue to try and improve, knowing him. And hopefully, his energy will spread through the rest of the team. It needs to desperately.

Happy healing, K-Smith.

And I don't see why...

…they don’t just start Stanton. I am not an advocate for Stanton any more than I am Culpepper, but why not at this juncture? He has more of a chance to be on our team next year than Daunte does, and the experience would be crucial if Staff goes down again next year…which is likely unless we improve tenfold on the o-line.

+1

Delmas should be pissed. We need 10 more guys like him on defense (I think we have that though in Foote and JPeterson). I’m with Twon as well – I’m no Stanton lover but my hatred for CPep and his abhorrent play is just too much. I’d rather see Stanton get a shot in the final 2 weeks.

MTM this morning said...

Stanton will start if Stafford is not ready.

My guess is Stafford will play the finally at Ford Field against the division rival…. and the Lions will win that game.

You're probably right

I think it’s risky though. If Staff does play that game one of 2 scenarios happen"

1.) Staff has a great game, the Lions win and we go into the offseason feeling great about 2010

2.) Staff plays horrible, throws 3 int’s we lose and we go into the offseason feeling lousy once again with slim hopes about this turning around in 2010.

It’s a tricky call and I’m sure Schwartz is thinking the same thing. I hope he sits honestly and has that “Savior of the Franchise” in his mind all summer and not a damaged and frail psyche in its place

How much worse can it get than

“#1 overall pick has sat on the bench 50% of the season due to injury”?

I don’t think our fragile Detroit Lions fan egos are going to be shattered if we lose with Stafford in. I don’t know that he necessarily needs to be in, with half the team on IR, but I’d rather him get some more game experience before the season ends.

I don't know Nate

I’d sit him for the reasons noted above. I really want a Win going into the offseason just like the rest of us but I fear the entire off-season may change if Staff looks like shit…………..of course if he looks awesome AND we get the win then life is BEAUTIFUL. Risky IMO

The NFL is about taking risks....

You have a point Hyper

The NFL is a risk-taking business in and of itself……..I just wouldn’t do it, not on a 2 – 13 team heading into the last game but the upside of a great game by Staff is also tremendous.

Does anyone think there's a chance that....

Culpepper gets resigned next year? Frankly he hasn’t done squat in the games he’s played in. Stanton I think proved that he’s at least a solid #2.

Start Stanton until Staff can play and let Culpepper start packing his bags. If you want a third QB on the roster pick up someone a lot younger.

C-pep will leave on his own.

He wants a chance to start or he’ll retire again.

LOL

He can retire based on 1999’s performance. He would OWE social security if his retirement was based on his performance since coming to the Motor City.

this is exactly why i love louis delmas. i wish we had 11 of him on defense

by lobaseballa25 on Dec 22, 2009 2:45 PM EST reply actions

It's good to here we didn't lose Gronk

Delmas is the man and has officially become a favourite player of mine. QB-situation-wise, I’d like to see Stafford play, mainly because I think we can win that way, but if he still is injured I say play Stanton, the team showed a whole lot of enthusiasm with him on the field. It’s like they have confidence in his play. I don’t think I could watch another Culpepper lead offence.
