For All the #2 Receiver Wishing...*Updated*

im just adding the Restricted Free Agent(RFA) and the Unrestricted Free Agent(UFA) tags to the players.

This following list of receivers in the free agents in 2010 most of them seem like we have no chance at all but you never know weirder things have happened. Just putting the list out there so people can see and voice their opinions. (If you feel this silly list is too obvious and waste of a read feel free to let me know) I put these receivers in order of catches thats about it. Lots of those guys sound great next to Calvin Johnson. Kevin Walter and below minus Braylon Edwards is where i think it looks logical enough we might get our hands on WR. Hopefully we can get one of these guys so we dont have to use a pick on a WR cause i would like to see our draft picks be on more dire needs

This type of post is never a waste

When someone takes the time to compile a list of free agents, I am always happy. Free agency is exciting, and considering different scenarios is always one of the more fun parts of the offseason, for me at least.

That said, a few of those guys aren’t going anywhere. Vincent Jackson has established himself as a top-tier WR for San Diego, Miles Austin has just broken out for Dallas, and Lance Moore was New Orleans’ #1 threat until his injury this year. So I’d forget about them.

Personally, I’d be extremely happy if we managed to pull in Malcom Floyd or Antonio Bryant. Kevin Walter is very good as well, but his size and everything is more suited as a slot guy. Braylon Edwards won’t want to go anywhere where he won’t be #1, plus I think he and New York are a good fit, and they see that as well. Braylon is Sanchez’s Megatron. I think I’d like Chris Chambers as well, but once again I think he had a good enough year in WR-starved KC to warrant a resigning by them.

Hixon, Hurd, Walter, Avant

I like these ones!

by IAmGross on Dec 22, 2009 1:52 AM EST reply actions

I would love to get BOTH

Avant and Walter…..Avant to be the #2 WR and Walter in the slot……that would be BADASS!

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Would a good slot guy do for Calvin

what Welker does for Moss? Pull the safeties in a bit and open up some one on one coverage?

Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson

by footstock on Dec 22, 2009 2:24 AM EST reply actions

Give him another release valve......

When CJ and WR2 are not open….check down to the slot, TE, and RB. The difference here would be that with Walter, we would have a guy who can CATCH the ball!

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

Lance Moore...

I’d take him. The Saints have a stable of WR under contract. I could see us realisticaly making him a better offer than what New Orleans could give him.

by j16941 on Dec 22, 2009 6:30 AM EST reply actions

I agree with j###s, Lance Moore may now be expendable.

With Meacham, Colston, and Henderson all playing well, I can see that Moore may not warrant a good offer from the Saints. especially coming off a season long injury. He would be a great slot upgrade for the Lions.

I also like Avant as a possession type receiver who may be obtained fairly cheaply. Again, the Eagles have Jackson and Maclin and Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis. Hmmmm maybe they keep Avant due to Curtis’ injuries and age.

by NorthLeft12 on Dec 22, 2009 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

My vote is for....

Vincent Jackson or Lance Moore. But I’d be happy with most of them, to be honest. They’re all talented.

GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!

by Twon82 on Dec 22, 2009 8:27 AM EST reply actions

I too would be happy with most of them.

Provided they have better hands than B. Johnson and Northcutt, I could live with any of them as long as we don’t have to use a pick on another WR.
Good post by the way.

by Lead Hunter on Dec 22, 2009 8:32 AM EST reply actions

That pretty much sums up my thoughts.....

Any WR2 and WR3 that are better than BJ and Northcutt (meaning anyone who actually catches the ball) would be fine by me!

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Could you imagine....

Brandon Marshal on the other side of CJ? It’d be like the Moore-Perriman days all over again. I know he had some attitude problems at the beginning of the year, but he seems to have put that behind him. The contract he’d command though would probably price him out of our consideration.

by vanman on Dec 22, 2009 8:44 AM EST reply actions

It will never happen.....

CJ and Marshall are WR1s……they would clash. Most likely it would have to be either/or.

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

It would be great to get

Jason Avant or Kevin Walter to complement Calvin. Lance Moore is pretty damn talented too.

by Kalzilla on Dec 22, 2009 8:49 AM EST reply actions

My top 3 number two receivers:

1.) Brandon Marshall (for obvious reasons however unlikely we get him)
2.) Vincent Jackson (tall, good hands, great compliment to CJ)
3.) Domenick Hixon (we could use him to return punts as well)

In a perfect world we would get one of these 3.

First two wont be available.

Hixon is average at best. Avant is best of the most likely available…Lance Moore might be available, but I think the Saints will keep him if healthy.

Hixon

is above average, especially considering his age.

His routes are superb and his hands are decent.

I dont see it.

Smith, Nicks, and Manningham are the go to guys there.
I’d rather have someone else…just my take.

Just livin' the dream...

by Brefstink on Dec 22, 2009 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

Actually.....

Manningham plays second fiddle to Nicks…..and ever since Nicks has started to break out, Manningham has sucked.

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

I had a hunch Nicks would be good

Good size, good strength, saw him make some real nice highlight reel type catches with UNC the year before, including at least one in the clutch to win a game.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 23, 2009 3:26 AM EST up reply actions

Manningham got injured

But still, he did more with limited targets than Hixson. Thats the bottom line.

Is Hixon…..Marshall and VJ are both WR1s……

lol

I think the idea is to eliminate the need of drafting a WR…..

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

My top two...

would be Lance Moore - NO, and Devon Bees - MIA. But, both of them are RFA. So I really would not like the Lions to give up picks to get these guys. Steve Breaston is also a RFA.

I like Kevin Walter. He has had a so-so season. He was injured early. Plus he plays in Houston. But wth his size 6-3 218lbs. He could be a very good complementary reciever to Megatron.

Malcom Floyd. He is 6-5, 225lbs. He has hands and size. Been starting in his last 6 or 7 games.

Someone not on the list. And I believe is a FA( was at the begining of the season). Josh Reed - BUF. Good route runner and has speed.

Lance Moore and Hixon ....

Would be at the top of my list.

Young, better talent than 3rd or 4th WR position they currently play. Hixon has return ability.

by CLF on Dec 22, 2009 11:35 AM EST reply actions

Again...

Good list, but its important to include the RFA and URFA. Makes a difference.

Slot versus wideout

I’m wondering if we need to focus on getting a slot guy to relieve the pressure on CJ versus another 1a wideout.

The 2-stud wideout thing hasn’t seemd to work well in Buffalo with TO and Lee Evans.

Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson

by footstock on Dec 22, 2009 11:45 AM EST reply actions

of course, we have to run the package

We run 2 wides and 2 TE’s or 2 wides, TE and FB most of the time—-so we would have to adjust the offense to focus on the slot. I don’t recall, but it doesn’t seem like it, that Linehan ever really used that package in Minnesota or St Louis.

He’s a decent slot WR and also punt returner.

You can definitely do worse than Northcutt as a slot guy.

I don’t think this year was ANYONE’S year on the Lions.

by Nate D. on Dec 22, 2009 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

Good points........

Sean McDonald was here as a slot, sucked and then gone……….I think Northcutt is the same caliber of player. Could do a lot worse I suppose but I personally am not liking him. We need a Brett Perriman type of #2

Furrey was my hero in the slot. I saw him take so many punishing hits and hang on to the ball, I would love to see him back in the D. Who’s he playing for now, anyways?

Pettigrew

If BP pans out and becomes a very viable threat in the passing game and not have to stay in to block all the time, he’ll fill that need basically. Either way, most D’s will probably still roll the safety to cover CJ.

by vanman on Dec 22, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Great. Then we get 1 on 1

with a good slot and no safety. True, the TE will help too but it’s not the same as a shifty speed guy who can go across the middle.

I remember reading someone asked Killer a similar question a few weeks ago
Tom, what do the Lions really need out of a number #2 WR…would it be better to have a real fast guy that could stretch the field or a solid consistent possession receiver?

TomKowalski:
according to the people i’ve talked to, it’s a speed guy … not just a fast guy, but a blazer … they need somebody who can stretch that field and force them to change coverages … a possession receiver isn’t going to scare anybody … defensive coordinators fear players who can go the distance on any play …

It's not often that I will admit it......

But I have to agree there too…..the possession receiver should be in the slot. We need a sub 4.4 guy who can catch at WR2…..

How fast is Avant again??

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Hmmm.....only a 4.55 (est)

He seems faster than that though……

by KDawg on Dec 22, 2009 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

Sam Hurd

should be taken into consideration here.

You Know if Al Davis likes him, He Must Be Speedy….

by j16941 on Dec 23, 2009 2:55 AM EST up reply actions

I've been favoring a big possession guy at WR2, but a super fast guy was in the back of my mind as an acceptablealternative

Unless we get someone 6-5, 225 like Malcolm Floyd AND he turns out to have hands of glue, I’d be willing to try a supersonic burner in the WR2 spot.

What? He can’t block a dead gopher? Humph, details.

by GRLion on Dec 23, 2009 3:39 AM EST up reply actions

I really really like 2 TE sets

2 WR/2 TE/FB/RB

Calvin, a new no. 2, Grew and Heller, Felton and Smith, with Staff @ QB and an upgraded line.

That’s a recipe for success. Both Pettigrew and Heller can block and catch, Felton is the same way. That’s a balanced offense that can go deep, run the power ball, and also PROTECT THE QB.

Just my personal preference. Plus with that setup, we only need to upgrade the o-line and a WR. Tell me we can’t do that and DRASTICALLY improve the defense between free agency and the draft.

by Nate D. on Dec 22, 2009 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Can I throw out a wild idea?

What about Devin Hester?

Yes, he’s expensive – he’s taking #1 money when he’d be no better than a #2 receiver in Detroit. But he’s got speed, decent hands, and runs routes fairly well. He’d also upgrade your special teams immeasurably. Plus, the cheapo Bears are fairly stuck with a lot of big contracts to underperformers and no draft picks on the first day, PLUS the GM is under fire and certainly on his last chance to do something with this team.

by NobodySpecial on Dec 22, 2009 4:00 PM EST reply actions

NO, NO, NO, NOOOOOOO!

OverPaid for his performance, plus it’s a divison opponent, never gonna trade him here.

Jacoby Ford from Clemson could be had much cheaper than Hester.

Moore and Walter are my picks

A solid no.2 is what we need. Calvin is our top guy and he is going to demand coverages which a decent no.2 can exploit. Another nice post Gyorick.

avant and breaston

We should go after both Breaston can be a playmaker someone who can really help open up Megatron and Avant would be a sweet third option with derrick williams also on the depth chart I’d say a deep young reciver corp would be great of matthew

by The Profiler on Dec 23, 2009 9:40 PM EST reply actions

Breaston is staying in Arizona

He will be their new #2 when they trade Boldin in the offseason.

AVANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need to get Jason Avant. The guy has a solid work ethic, runs exceptional routes, has good size, and has some of the best hands in the league. I’m sure he’d love come back to Michigan and help out the Lions. He would be the perfect guy to play across from Calvin. Stafford no longer has to worry about dropped passes by Bryant Johnson. I wouldn’t be surprised if Avant didn’t have a drop all season in Detroit if we were to sign him. Sign this guy as soon as we can.
