Wednesday Notes: Drew Stanton to Start on Sunday

  • Based on who took the first-team reps in practice today, it looks like Drew Stanton finally is going to get his shot at being the starting quarterback.  Matthew Stafford will be out for the third week in a row, and it appears the coaching staff has finally realized that playing Daunte Culpepper is just pointless, especially based on what happened on Sunday.

UPDATE: Stanton has now been named the starter for Sunday.
  • The Lions added Terrance Taylor, who was released to make room for Dan Gronkowski, back to their practice squad today.  A spot opened up because Dan Gerberry was signed to the 53-man roster after Melvin Fowler was waived.
  • While Don Muhlbach practiced today, Phillip Buchanon, Larry Foote, and Vinny Ciurciu did not.
  • Schwartz benched Gosder Cherilus on Sunday and said that "he's still a work in progress [with technique]."
  • Jason Hanson thinks he is struggling so much because he is over-kicking the ball on some field goal attempts.
  • Louis Delmas is a candidate for Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week.  You can vote for him over at NFL.com.
  • Grady Jackson's brother was sentenced to 20-50 years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder.

I'm happy for Stanton

The fact that he’s starting gives me more reason to watch than any other reason. that and I really want to concentrate on how Levy plays in case Ernie does indeed become traid fodder during the offseason

like ol' Wayno but better

I think he will be better… you are right about the confidence… he WILL right the ship.. his body langauge tells it all.. can’t wait till the draft.. The Lions will make the corrections. If it is as good as this year… the team will be better… building through youth!!!!

GO LIONS in 2010! the transformation starts now.. they have much to do.

Good for Stanton.

Very happy to see him get some time with the first string. Will be nice to see if he can be a servicable backup or if we need to look elsewhere.

I'm happy for Stanton too...

I have not been impressed by Stanton any more than Culpepper, but I think he deserves this start right now. Coach made a good decision there. Stanton needs the experience on the field, and this will be a perfect chance for him to get that and become a solid backup option for Stafford (or even prove that he has potential as a legit starter in this league).

GO DREW

Now is the time to find out if stanto has what it takes to back up matthew next year dante is out and drew has almost a year in this system if he can prove to manage a game and just move the chains he could easily be the number 2 next year freeing up alot of cap for this off season

by The Profiler on Dec 23, 2009 9:09 PM EST reply actions

O also

I would just like to remind everyone marinelli is the D line coach in chicago drew could very well embarass him self against chi town by beating the coach that said he couldn’t play

by The Profiler on Dec 23, 2009 9:11 PM EST reply actions

isn't Staff on IR Sean??

I thought I read that?? Could be wrong. It would be GREAT though as Profiler says for Stanton to give it to Marinelli. I just wish he could “not embarras himself” against Coletto, wherever he may be.

Good on Stanton

More excited about the game now. Doesn’t change our chances of winning really, but the team seems more confident with Stanton behind center.

Also, I watched a vid on NFL.com outlining the ten best moments of the decade and Stafford’s performance against the Browns came in at no.8. Nice to see some Lions recognition.

Good to see Taylor is back on...

What the hell happened? He looked promising coming out and was just a 4th round draft pick!

I WANTED THE LIONS TO FRICKIN’ PICK HIM!

Luckily they were smart and picked Sammie Hill.

who do you believe ....

this is another william clay ford move to sell tickets …jim says over and over cullpeper is our guy , then switches mid-stream and starts stanton ….that may be why he looks stressed in the second video …hewas told to do so in a shitty season that is already lost to sell a few more tickets so people come to see thehometown boy from michigan state …DON’T YOU AGREE ?…cullpepper has been horrible , but if he is your guy , that’s it right ? not whe you wil be 2-14 I guess ….lets hope our new draft place gets us a defensive tackle from nebraska……

drew wont put any more buts in seat the c-pep would

now staffred would have a better shot at selling out

by det32 on Dec 24, 2009 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

there is NO way that is a WCF move....NONE

First WCF has nothing to do with the Lions. Other then signing the paychecks. C-pep may have been Schwartz’s guy. But the way the Lions responded to Stanton last week is why Pep is riding the pine this week

He moved the offense

even if it wasn’t through his passing. Simply put Stant put points on the board – maybe not all directly himself but as Cruize mentioned the Lions responded with Stant in there
