49ers-Lions: Q&A with Niners Nation
Hey folks, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. My 49ers were eliminated from the playoff race last week, but there is still plenty to work on as the team looks ahead to 2010. Alex Smith is likely to be the #1 QB next season, but closing out the season with 2 strong efforts would solidify that position.
The team is continuing to figure out its offensive identity and still has a ways to go before they know where they're at. Frank Gore has had big games, but he's been a bit inconsistent, thanks in no small part to a rather poor offensive line. On defense, the team plays very aggressive, which can lead to big plays for one team or the other.
Feel free to fire away with questions and I'll also get some of the other readers at Niners Nation to come over and provide info.

I got one I think
as a guy that went to high school in the same area as joe staley we seen him play many games against us. I’d like to know what you guys in san fran think of Big Joe he looks like he is developing into a pro bowl tackle but I haven’t seen much of him whats the niners fans thoughts?
Staley
Staley has had an interesting run with the 49ers so far. His first season he played right tackle, then moved over to left tackle his second season. He struggled a bit in his switch to left tackle but certainly showed improvement as the season went on.
This past offseason he signed a 9-year contract extension for $43 million. The 49ers had a lot of cap room and basically front-loaded the contract with a huge cap hit in year 1, but then reasonable amounts after that.
This season he started out solidly enough but then sprained his PCL and MCL in early November and has been out since. Staley returned to the lineup last week and will finish out the season as the starter.
All in all, he’s probably the best lineman on the team. The offensive line has really struggled this year, but he’ll be the guy along with C Eric Heitmann) they build around this offseason

Willis...
Definitely Willis. Although I’d imagine Willis has avoided going to Japan since the citizens of Tokyo would confuse him with Godzilla.

I think I'm gonna start Alex Smith over Warner this week because of the matchup
Although Warner didn’t exactly tear apart the Lions’ defense last week, I sort of just expect it, especially with the talk of how your passing attack is coming along. Is that a good bet or is Smith a little too inconsistent, regardless of the fact that he is playing Detroit? Warner is playing St. Louis, who aren’t very good either, but I just feel like the Lions are gonna go on the road and get destroyed.

Smith
Remember that St. Louis is traveling down to Arizona for their game as well. After a couple solid weeks Smith has been a turnover machine the last two weeks, which could certainly hurt you. Alex Smith has a lot of upside, but I think Warner also has the upside AND more consistently reaches it. I assume you’re in your league title game?

Two of them actually
Although this is really the only roster debate I’m having outside of a running back spot.

QB
I’d love to say Smith, but Warner seems a safer play, even with Arizona clinching the division and a long shot to get a first round bye.

St. Louis
has actually been surprisingly playing teams tough down the stretch. They only lost to the Cards by a TD last time they played and only allowed 21 points…Warner didn’t do bad, but not great either in that game with 203 yards, and 2 TD’s.
Smith on the other hand, has not had enough stellar performances yet if you’re talking about fantasy football. Maybe in the future but I’d say your best bet this week is Warner as much as I hate to say it
Tim Tebow = 1,432,219 season tickets next year. Who wouldn't pick him in the 1st round with those projections?
I think that's the game Warner played the first half and got hurt
So he racked up some big numbers in the little he played.

Much as I hate to say it
go with Warner. He’s more consistent and can put up bigger numbers. Yeah he might turn in a 5 INT game on you but those are pretty rare. Alex has had one 300 yard game this year and he’s INT prone.
Yes Drew K, Tim Tebow will get picked in the first round.
PLEASE start Warner over Smith
Smith COULD have more points this week, but 80% of the time Warner will have a better game. Play the odds, play Warner. Smith is TOO shaky. Take it from Niner Fans that watch him consistently. Also from fans that see Warner play twice a year, and follow him pretty closely since our league rival.

I got one...
So how do you guys feel about the possible stadium move to the East Bay. And sharing it with the Raiders?
if the shoe fits...get another one just like it - George Carlin
stadium
The team is currently working on a deal to move to the South Bay in Santa Clara. The East Bay comment was just Jed York saying there was a better chance of them moving to Oakland than staying in SF because Oakland has infrastructure in place.
I actually wouldn’t mind sharing a stadium with the Raiders, even down in Santa Clara. The team would cut down their own costs and I think it could work fine. It’s a smart business move.

But I don't see it happening...
…as long as the guy in the track suit is still alive.
Let it be known
I wish we had beaten the Cardinals NOT because i wanted to keep the niners playoff hopes alive, only because i wanted to use this picture.

Too awesome!!!
They are running the last 3 Star Wars on SpikeTV and I just watched Return of the Jedi. N4ry4’s re-enactment of what Admiral says “once the Death Star is OPERATIONAL” is the funniest thing I have read in a while……………….too fucking funny.
What was the name of Lando’s sidekick in that movie?? He looks like an elf and has 2 upper lips with a red hat?? I hat that action figure as a kid!!!

That's him!!!
My fiancee thinks I am insane as I cannot stop laughing right now. n4ry4 you are now the coolest guy on POD in my opinion (well at least tied for first place with everyone else since everyone is cool).
I cannot stop laughing you found that!!! You even got his name!!

I cannot stop laughing about that

Alex Smith
Smith for a long time was considered a disappointment at QB but has recently had a resurgence. Did you expect this from the young fella and if so do you think he can continue it for a long period?
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
Smith
I thought Smith was talented but at the beginning of the year I didn’t think he’d get much of a chance to show it. As far as long term success, I’m not sure at this point. I think he’ll be the starting QB at the beginning of the 2010 season, and if the 49ers can get a couple of offensive linemen this offseason, I could see him having some sustained success. He’s struggled at times, but he’s also had to deal with having very little time behind the line. Potentially more important is the fact that Smith will likely have the same offensive coordinator for the second season in a row. If that happens it would be the first time since he was at Utah that he’s had an OC for more than one season.

Well actually. alot of us niner fans don’t see alex smith as the answer. sure he has improved but he is still very inconsistent. Especially in crucial games/plays. He hasn’t fully convinced all of us. and not alot of us expected the improvement. I believe he can improve but i just don’t see him leading our team.
Thanks for the visit, Fooch
How’s Dre Bly doin in a Niners uniform. I don’t watch much of your team, but from what I saw in the Monday night game a couple of weeks back, you guys got a solid team. You should make the playoffs next year
The beginning of the end of the misery
Dre
Bly has had an up and down year. He’s struggled at times but he’s made some rather big plays for the team this season. His inconsistency has been kind of typical of the 49ers as a whole. He’s only signed for one season so it’ll be interesting to see if the 49ers bring him back, or if he even wants to come back.

The only thing I've seen of Bly this year...
was him highstepping it after the pick and the fumbling. You might have different thoughts, but I thought that was pretty funny.
That summarizes his time in Detroit
But he had a HELL of a game on Thanksgiving 2003.

Question for Fooch
Who owns the 49ers and who runs the 49ers football operations? Is Eddie DeBartolo still with that team?? I ask because my company may be doing business with a financing firm run by the DeBartolo family.
Thanks!!

Debartolo
Eddie D is no longer involved with the team. After his bribery scandal in Louisiana, he was forced to hand control of the team over to his sister Denise and her husband John York. Right now their son Jed York is the team president and the face of the franchise. He speaks with Eddie frequently and has a certain Eddie flair to him. But technically Eddie is no longer involved.

wasn't that back in 1998?
Just give me 25 guys on the last year of their contracts; I'll win a pennant every year....Sparky Anderson
Eddie D now has some weird financing company in SF
I don’t think we’re gonna do anything with him but I thought he was banned from the team for life, or something like that.
Thanks Fooch and good luck this weekend, but not TOOOO much luck
