Two Things Are Clear
Watching the Bengals game Sunday, I noticed two distinct facts about the Lions.
1) DeAndre Levy is the answer at LB. He seemed to be in on every play during the entire game. I originally was skeptical on this guy, but now I'm convinced that we could trade Ernie Sims for possibly some draft picks/players to fill more holes without missing a beat on defense. I realize Sims' trade value isn't at its highest right now with the injuries and all, but Mayhew has been known to pull some doozies. Plus, Levy will only get better as he gains experience.
2) And this probably isn't news to anyone, but it was made even more clear against Cincinnati, we NEED to draft O-line and Defensive Secondary. I honestly don't believe our Defensive line needs to be addressed as early in the draft as I've seen some commenters on this site suggest. I think our priorities are keeping Stafford off his back and giving opposing QBs less time to throw the ball. A few Secondary additions will give our D-line more time to get to the QB. I think the guys in place right now are capable of doing just that. They may not be the best in the league, but they can get the job done. Our Secondary on the other hand is horrendous, and is among the worst in the league. Filling these holes will make the D-line that much better. Plus, we've held up pretty good against the run this year. We just need to get the QB more often, and I believe upgrading our Secondary will help us do that. Of course, point #2 here is completely moot if we have a chance to snag Suh LOL.
As always, please share your thoughts and opinions. I like to hear what other fellow Lions fans have to say. Happy Tuesday!

Unlike Most....
…..I loved the Levy pick and yes he will only get better……We could maybe get a 4th or 5th for sims…..Id take that though ta this point….This staff proved they could draft well and any extra picks we can get would be great.
I will eat crow all day and let you say "told you so"
You were dead on with Levy from the minute he was picked.

Thank You
I saw him play a few games in college on ESPN……Every game I watched he wass around the ball…..maybe not making the tackle but always around the ball……Loved it when we got him…..However I did think it was a lil early but stil loved the pick.

Also.....
…..I agree with secondary upgrade…..I however think you could have the best corners in the league and if you dont get a pass rush they are no good……You need to havea rush to hav ea good secondary……Thats why I say dline is more important….however if we could get mays from usc or berry for ten id take that.
I agree with that 100% (D-line is more important)
No pass rush makes the best corners in the world look like crap. We obviously have no pass rush coming from our defensive tackles….we could not get a single sack, by a defensive lineman, on Aaron Rodgers in our last game vs Green Bay for God’s sake!! The only sack we got against them came from a missed block on Julian Peterson. If we were to get a guy like Suh, I can guarantee that our corners would suddenly look a whole lot better (if he plays as well in the pros as he is right now, or at least close to that level), I also think that we could very well improve our secondary at the same time if we were to somehow land Suh. We could still draft a corner later in the draft and kill two birds with one stone.
I really like Hills play this year....
…..Hes a rookie and has played really well…..I think Hill would benefit most from a guy like Suh……However its gona be tough to get him unless we are picking 1st.

I think you and I have agreed on this before.
We need DT more than DE. Seems the ends get up field but the opposing QB just steps up in the pocket to buy time, a lot of time. Suh would be huge for our defense, just not getting my hopes up because its a slim chance we get him.
Okay, I was wrong about Levy.
I did not like the pick at the time and still think we were likely to get him later in the draft, but he has been very good and is getting better.
I am not so sure about trading Ernie. I think the return will not be worth what he could possibly do if he is healthy. I would give him another year.
I wouldnt trade sims
unless we got something worth out of the deal. If we only got a 4th or 5th rd it wouldnt guarantee someone as good as Sims when he actually is healthy

I'm willing to give Sims some more time
He has stuggled somewhat and Levy has been strong, but I’d be more inclined to trade Sims in a year or two after we are sure that Levy’s form is consistent.

I agree... sort of
I think the D-line needs help before the secondary. Everything starts up front. Get a good pass rush, DBs look better. Its too hard to go the other way. Even the best corners cant cover for as long as it takes our line to get to the QB.
Still not sold on Levy
I don’t know why, I just don’t see what everyone else seems to. Honestly, he seems average at best. I haven’t seen anything from him that would warrant replacing a current starter with him. I don’t know where Sims’ contract status lies currently, but I’m sure he doesn’t have more than a year or two left. Let Levy play when someone is injured (often) and let Sims ride his contract out.
Depth has never hurt a team. Ever. Regardless of how disenfranchised people are with Ernie Sims, he’s better than Levy, and better than whatever schmuck we’d pick up to back him up, I’d wager.
Also, throw me in with the d-line before secondary group. It’s (I thought, anyways) common knowledge that a good pass rush is far more disruptive to a QB than a good secondary. If that QB only has a few moments to throw, rather than the 10 seconds they currently get, they will never make it through their progression to find the open man.
That said, I think we still absolutely need an upgrade at the corner position. Draftwise, we are going to either get Berry or Suh (or so I think) with our first pick, and either one is going to be phenomenal. Think about having potentially the best safety tandem in the NFL. That makes me salivate nearly as much as having a house of spears demolishing Cutler and Co. every year.
I’m already itching for the draft… I’m a junkie.
As Far As Levy.....
…..Whens he plays he alsways around the ball and I mean always……Secondly his coverage skills are amazing for a linebacker…..Just amazing quickness….not fast but his quickness and nose for the bal are amzing…..Reminds me of Chris Spielman.

Interior D-Line Makes everyone play better
The corners can’t cover double and triple moves against good receivers…almost impossible. The D-ends can beat the tackle but not get to the qb when he steps up in the pocket.
You have to have a strong push in the middle to prevent the qb from stepping up too far, which allows the D-ends to sack and the corners to cover. Jared Allen should be buying the Williams’ matching cars for his huge numbers this year. You can’t step up into the pocket against the vikes because there is usually a very small and jumbled interior pocket to step into.
I guarantee you that Stafford’s accuracy will go up by 10% when our guards can hold off the interior rush and give him a real pocket to throw from. That’s the impact that good OG’s have on a game, yet they are overlooked way too often. Of course, our previous management never valued our OG’s, so we let guys like Jeff Hartings and Damien Woody go. Uugh.
The draft HAS to address OL and DT with picks 1 & 2. A corner with the 3rd round, and then try to get a sleeper WR or OG’s in the later rounds. The problem with that is that it won’t address our needs to add depth needed for special teams. Hopefully there will be a season in 2011 so that we can round out our team!

Your title says it all “Interior D-Line makes everyone play better”
Look how Sims benefitted from having Shaun Rogers in the middle.

Well, i agree with you and everyone else on here about Levy.
No one really knew who he was, so i think most of us was skeptical about him.
He is definitely the man for the job though.
As far as trading Sims, at first, i was all about that too and hopefully getting some good draft picks, but then i thought, who do we have coming off of the bench is Peterson or Levy gets injured? Or should i say, WHEN they get injured.
Sims would be a great guy to come off of the bench, and if we did trade him, we would just have to draft another LB to replace him if we want to do it right.
As far as the secondary goes, they still need some work, but they really werent that bad. You have to consider that Palmer had tons of time to pass. If we had a decent pass rush, he would have made some bad throws and threw a few more INTs.
We need a DT!
I say, do what we have to do, trade up or whatever to get Suh.
Suh and Hill would be a great combination.
Get rid of Jackson. He didnt really do to much anyway.
If we cant get Suh, i dont know much about McCoy, but I think he would be the next DT available. I would love to get Berry as our Safety, but i think DT is a more pressing need at this time.
I knew who he was....
…….Dont make a blanket comment man….If you watched college football you would have known who he was.

OR......
we could draft Tebow just to piss Jacksonville off.
They REALLY want him.
We take him and make them give us 3 picks for him.
I love extortion!
No, most of their fans don't want him unless they can get him in the third or fourth round.
The Jags don’t have a second round pick this year and I would be really surprised if they used their first rounder for him. David Garrard is an okay QB and that team is not that far away from being pretty solid. They need defensive help; secondary and the D line.
