Ask Baltimore Beatdown
How's it going guys? Mr MaLoR (or Brian if you like) here from Baltimore Beatdown, the Ravens blog. Critical match-up this week between the Ravens and Lions in our great city of Baltimore. The Ravens have their playoff hopes on the line with this next game, and even though you guys are out of the playoff picture, I am sure it would be a great confidence boost for your entire team and new head coach to get a win over a team that has had much success this decade.
As most of us know by know, your franchise Quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is out for this game and good old Daunte Culpepper will get the start. I have always had a great deal of respect for Culpepper and the way he has played the game since his days in Minnesota. Tough football player for sure and I like your offense with him in there.
Even though the record might not show it, you guys have some serious talent on your team, with some very underrated players. I have always thought that LB Ernie Sims is one of the best in the league, but because of the Lions' lack of success lately, he has been overlooked by many. Your team has promising young talent in guys like Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith and one player I really like, is the Safety Delmas.
I am sure the lead writer for Baltimore Beatdown, Bruce, would have started one of these very soon, but the weekend is right around the corner and it is time to move on from our losses last week and focus on Sunday. So feel free to ask any questions you have and please do the same over at our blog. Good luck and stay healthy.

Hey Brian
Thanks for the intro, comments, and offer to answer any questions. I too think that Ernie Sims is a good linebacker (he is young and fast, and he is a solid coverage linebacker), however I am not sure he fits our system anymore. I think he may be better off elsewhere, even though it may prove necessary for the Lions to keep him for depth (many of us think that DeAndre Levy has proven to be just as good if not a better fit in our current system). That said, my question is this:
What do you think the Lions could get out of Ernie Sims in trade? Specifically, I am looking for your opinion on what they might get in terms of draft picks for a player like Sims. Thanks!
That's an interesting question, KDawg
I had no clue that he was possibly in position for a trade. How can someone of his talent not fit a defensive system?
Anyway, I personally would definitely give up a deal that looks like a 2nd and 4th/5th round pick for him. He is still young and has had very little injury problems, from what I know. I agree that players do not make sense to be involved in a trade like this, since you are still building for the future and a much better way to do that is with draft picks rather than trading for one or two players.
With the draft picks, you can definitely have a larger variety than what is already in the league for what would fit your team best.
So in my opinion, I would say a 2nd and 4th/5th seems like a fair trade for both sides.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Does that seem too much?
I have always thought highly of Sims. Just saw that he has only played in 7 games this year, so maybe he is injury prone now. But getting around 125 tackles his first 3 years is pretty damn good. I should ask you guys what deal would you expect to get in a trade?
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
More of a Tampa 2 LB.
Plus we are really happy with Levy. The reason I jumped on the offer is the fact that Mayhew and Schwartz drafted really good last year, and an opportunity to pick up 2 Pick for Sims is just too good to pass up. We just have to many holes to fill.
I think a 2nd is too high
Try a 4th this year and next.

If that were the only offer....
I would hope that the Lions just keep him and use him as needed. He was a first round pick and has only missed time this season. He will recover and be 100% again next year. The only reason I even asked is because it is obvious that we could use some extra picks or some leverage to move up and snag Suh if need be. Like j16941 said, Sims is a guy that was drafted by our former GM, to fit in the Tampa 2 scheme. With the Tampa 2 no longer being utilized in Detroit, Sims’ seems to be struggling to adapt to the new scheme. I think that a team which is needy at LB would love to have Ernie, and I think we could benefit from trading him.
Personally, I thought that the offer given by Brian was a fair offer. I myself would not take less than a 2nd round pick straight up for Sims. If we were to use him as leverage with say Tampa or Cleveland (if the Rams do take a QB), then I would like to see a package offer of Sims in exchange for a 3rd rounder and a swap of position in the first round. If that were not possible, then I think the Lions would be making a mistake to trade him for less.
Hey Brian. (I keep picturing the Dog from Family Guy)
Thanks for stopping by. I always like it when a few representatives venture over to POD the week leading up to gameday. Just a couple questions for ya.
1. Have you seen “The Blindside”, and what did you think about such a high profile movie coming out During the Rookie Season of your 1st round draft pick? (I saw it and loved it by the way, kinda cheesy, but a great story!)
2. Sticking with Oher. What do you think of him so far, happy with the pick? Do you think we Need to spend a 1st RD pick on a OL man. Who do you like for OL in the Draft?
3. Flacco, Your impressions so far? Are you glad you guys started him as a rookie? And your thoughts on Stafford, and his Performance?
Sorry I know that’s kinda alot of stuff to cover, but pick and choose if ya want. Thanks again.
Jeremy-
First off, love the profile picture
My personal favorite beer. Isn’t POD some 1 hit wonder rock band from the early part of this decade? Lol. Anyway….
1. Yes, I have seen “The Blindside” and it was very good. I like the timing of the movie with Oher’s rookie year because it got his name out there very quickly. He is getting the publicity he deserves. It was definitely a little cheesy, as the guy who played Oher seemed way softer and less intelligent than Mike really is. All around great movie though.
2. I could not be happier with Oher. He is a mean, mean dude. He has taken some of the games best DE (Odom, Allen, Dumerville, Mathis) and just thrown them to the ground. This guy is scary good. Sure fire pro-bowler for years to come and should really be a candidate for rookie of the year. I think it is smart for you to draft an OL this year. With you having your franchise QB, you have to keep him upright. No matter how many weapons you have in Johnson, Pettigrew, Smith, no QB will succeed without a solid O-Line. The Ravens made sure of that for Joe. We have 2 first round picks starting for us, a pro bowl Center, and maybe the most athletic and largest LT in the game in Jared Gaither. Russel Okong from Oklahoma State and Bruce Campbell from Maryland are my two best prospects. I attend Maryland right now, and I have watched Campbell for a while and he is nasty. But with the way your season is playing out (no disrespect) Okung is too good to pass up if it is OL you really need. But if you do get the first pick in the draft, go after Suh. Insane DT.
3. I am iffy on Flacco right now. Making terrible decisions in many of our losses this year, most of which are coming in the redzone when we really need a score. He is trying to force some throws, but much of his bad numbers are coming from bad play calling from our coaches. Joe is still a very good QB and yes I am glad we started him from day 1. He has all the physical tools and a very mature mind. He just needs to learn to be patient and not go for the throat on every pass.
Really like Stafford. I think he is way better than Sanchez ever will be. Rocket arm and just seems like he wants to get the job done. And you guys put some great weapons around him with Calvin and Pettigrew. Those two should be able to help Matthew progress very quickly. I do like Kevin Smith, but I think you guys need a power Running Back to take some of the weight off Matt’s shoulders. Even though it was against Cleveland, the way he stood in there with that hurt shoulder was incredible. I only wish success for the guy and success for your team with him.
Thanks for the questions. Keep them coming.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I agree with your OL picks...
I also agree about Suh. The more I see, the More I Want Him.
Unfortunately I just don’t see it happening. The only 1 loss team I see passing on him is STL. Supposedly they are in LOVE with Claussen.
Plus we still got wins coming against the 49er’s and Bears!!! GO LIONS!!!!
Oher was a steal
compared to Cincy’s taking Andre Smith #5 overall, Oher is a better player right now and will definitely be the Ravnes LT at some point in the near future. He was not a fan of the book or the movie as he feels it makes him look like a stupid kid, which to me is not true, just a kids raised in such poverty that he had and did learn to acclimate and thrive.
As far as Detroit’s draft, while Stafford looks to be the real deal, I definitely would have taken the huge OT with the first pick and probably one of the USC LB’s (Maualaga) with the other 1st rounder. I’d have stuck w/ Culpepper this season as there are a bunch of very good QB’s coming out in April’s draft. Load up on the o-line and defense then bring in a QB to work behind them.
I guess we’ll see what happens over the next few years.

I got no porblem with Brian doing this
as he has come a long way from his beer-fueled frustrating rants last year and this season, especially to our hated division rivals, although you’d laugh your head off seeing some of his retorts and philosophising!

Do Lions fans remember?
The 2005 game the Ravens played in Detroit, where we had 21 penalties and melted down big time. There was also a stupid call by a ref where the Lions QB was hit while he threw, an obvious incompletion, but the refs let the game go on and the Lions RB ran over picked up the ball while everyone else stood around and then he ran it either of a TD or down to the goal line for a score on the next play. Suggs, got something like 20 of those 21 penalties himself.
Scary enough, we have not learned as we have the most penalty yards in the NFL, mostly due to the overwhelming # of pass interference calls against us. We have 12 for the season and had 4 or 5 on Monday night. Some things never change!

Was that the one . . .
Where Kevin Jones hit and drove through a Ray Ray tackle to score? I remember reading about how he went to Ray and said “I got you”, and he replied, “Yeah, you got me . . .”
I thought it was proof positive that Kevin Jones was strong enough to handle a full load . . . heh. Right.

The game against NE
You guys got hosed, the “Tom Brady” rule was in full effect.
Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain. Lily Tomlin
Yea that game sucked
If you go back and watch it, look for when Flacco gets absolutely crushed by a LB and you will count at least 2 seconds after he gets rid of the ball that the hit was delivered.
Brady got those calls for him because Ngata’s arm came down on his shoulder pads and grazed his helmet while Ngata was trying to swat the ball. 15 yards. Then Suggs got pushed in the back and fell towards Brady’s knees, Brady was still standing as he dodged out of the way. Then you saw him jumping up and down, smiling and begging for the flag to be thrown. The ref delayed a bit till Brady was done begging, shook his head yes and threw the flag.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
And that hit on Flacco
caused the concussion that had LT Jared Gaither carted off the field as well.

Who that is a Lion's fan doesn't remember that one!
I just remember Billick pacing the sidelines, like he couldn’t believe it was happening. Looked like his head was going to explode. I think that game was the first time he probably knew he was going to get fired!
I think of that game

I remember that it was a nice day so I was outside playing football
I come in, start to watch the game, and find out how many penalties there had been. I have to imagine that I laughed for a decent amount of time.

Thanks to both Brian and Bruce for starting this dialogue... great job!
Have a few questions for you….
- Haven’t heard a lot about either Ray Lewis or Ed Reed this year (and to be fair, I haven’t watched many Ravens games lately). Are either starting to slow down at all (especially Ray)? I know that Reed is still fairly young, but do you guys have any young talent that you forsee replacing them in the near future? If you don’t, is it a big concern?
- How do you guys like Harbaugh as a coach now that he is into his second year? With his early success, do you think it was his coaching or did he just inherit a good roster that needed a young quarterback?
- Since draft talk is all the rage here in Detroit (because we are always out of the post-season equation by mid-season), what positions are your biggest needs heading into next year? I figure you’ll be picking at least in the early twenties (hopefully lower if you guys can get into the playoffs and do well)… anyone that’s got your eye?
Thanks again for coming over to our site and getting acquainted! Good luck this week… (just not too much)
- Ray and Reed are having “off years.” Yes, they are putting up some of the stats that we are used to seeing from them, but these 2 are not leading the other guys the way we want them to. Ray of course is slowing down a bit, as he is 34 years old now. But he can still bring it for sure and leads our team in tackles. Reed has not been himself this year. Still making some plays, but I blame a good bit of our struggles in the secondary on Reed being out of position. We really do not have anyone, yet, to replace Ray and Reed. Ray will most likely be the first, so we will need to make a move high in the draft for that. It is a little too early to start thinking of Reed’s replacement in my opinion. It is not too big of a concern because our general manager, Ozzie Newsome, is arguably the best in the league at getting talent through the draft. I trust that he will be able to replace these two HOF.
- With Harbaugh, I think it is a little of both of which you stated. I think he is a good, but not great coach right now. He needs to teach more discipline to this team, something we lacked under Billick. He did inherit a great roster, that is not a lie. I think he is the right coach for us, but is just starting to get his feet on the ground. Gotta give the man some time.
- With the draft, I think the biggest needs right now are WR, CB, and DE, in no particular order. We need to give Joe some weapons, and do it quickly. But we also need to stop the pass which we havent been able to do too much this year with terrible CB play. We need to improve our pass rush, as we only have 23 sacks on the year when in recent years 40 sacks was a bad season for us. I am unsure which position I want more, but right now I would like to see a pure DE through the draft. We have too many of those hybrid players and need someone with their hand in the dirt every down. I think we will make a move for a CB or WR through free agency or a trade. I do like Dunlap out of FLA for DE or Morgan from G-Tech. For WR, love Dez Bryant, but doubt he will fall to us. Like Arellius Benn out of Illinois. For CB, I like Joe Haden (Baltimore Born) from FLA and Thompson from CAL. I also would not mind seeing LB Rolando McClain from Bama or Brandon Spikes from FLA to maybe breed into taking over for Ray Lewis one day.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Also, Ray is not getting much help
from the Will, now that Bart Scott is gone, Tavares Gooden has not played anywhere as good as had been expected. So then more falls on Ray’s shoulders. No outstanding blitzing LB like Scott was so DBs have to cover better due to lack of pass pressure requiring Ray to blitz more often, leaving middle open.
Reed not making the type of plays that broke open games anymore like he did last season. QB’s are staying away from his side of the field. Reed may not even play Sunday and I say don’t play him, let him heal until next week vs. Bears so he is ready for our rematch at Pittsburgh.

by Bruce Raffel on Dec 10, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions
I was wondering about that
In recent years, you guys have lost Bart Scott, and Adalius Thomas at linebacker, and I believe the corners are new guys too. How are the replacements playing right now?
The beginning of the end of the misery
Foxworth and Washington
Two brand new guys to starting full time in our system. Have been pretty susceptible to big plays this year, but it is mainly because of the size difference that most WR have on our CB. I would give them a C- for the year. There have been times where they have looked decent, but for the most part they have both looked like back-ups.
However, 3rd round pick from this year, Lardarius Webb, has taken over Washington’s spot because of injury. He has been more than we expected. Incredible athlete and knows how to put a body on someone, even though he is a smaller guy. Great open field tackler. Watch out for him. If Culpepper makes a bad throw his way, it could very well be 6 to the house.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Webb has also taken over
kickoff returns and is averaging over 26 yards/return. He broke one against Denver and is a threat to take another.
Our DB’s as fast a s they are, are just not physical enough in the tough AFC North. We need that 6’1", 200 pound CB to cover those bigger WR’’s that we face regularly. Teams have exposed that plus see our nickel and dime CB’s are easily beaten and regularly get flagged for PI penalties.
The loss of those LB’s you mentioned have usually be acceptable because the next guy stepped up but that has just not happened this season. We also need a rush end to help out Suggs, who should sit again IMO to get healthy for the stretch run.

the staff likes backus to much.. + okung cant run block for shit
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
Yeah ok....LOL
They have had a 1000+ yard rusher every year since he got to OK State, and had not had one for years before that. In fact I’m not sure they had a 1000 yard back since Barry Sanders before Okung got there.
i was told he cant run block by his bio/ profile but w/e
still dont think it well happon even if it should
Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
The one who said McCoy, did he mean Colt?
Why would you want another QB? Suh would be my pick as I see him as the one who will make the best pro of all of them. You won’t need a RB,as the passing game improves, the run will follow. Perhaps a bigger o-lineman to protect Matt or another wideout to complement Megatron. Of course, going defensive seems to be the logical move, considering the holes and ranking.

There is 2 different ones that say he is a beast.
I am not saying he will get picked by Detroit.....
But I am saying they should pick him over Berry, Mays, Gerald McCoy, or anyone else if Suh is gone.
What they should do and what they will do may be two entirely different things.

Just Remember matt... what would Daunte do??
Ah yes.....the always reliable CBS sports.....lol
Didn’t I already mention that I do not hold anything CBS Sports says as valid or even remotely accurate?
However....
That profile did have this to say:
With Okung helping pave the way in 2009, OSU led the Big 12 in rushing offense for the fourth-straight year and had a 1,000-yard running back for the third year in a row, which ties a school record.
That is accurate. The only negatives I can see about him, pertaining to run blocking, even on this particular profile is that he “Will lean forward when trying to aggressively run block, and loses his balance against quicker ends. Drive blocking is not his strength, as he tends to get his pads too high too quickly.”
However, that is immediately countered with “Keeps legs churning after initial contact, however, to take his man out of the play or put him on the ground. Once engaged, will not let go – sometimes through the whistle. Can turn his man inside or outside using angles and foot work, not brute strength”.
Overall, even CBS has Okung as a dominant LT in the pros, stating that “With some technique work, the Texas native should be a long-time NFL starter – and a potential Pro Bowler – on the blind side”.
I think I like that idea…..don’t you?
obviously you know
Your team much better than I do. But from what I have seen Ray Lewis has looked as solid as ever. His football smarts are incredible. I still can’t believe the play he made on Sproles in SD this year. He knew it was coming AND made the play by laying the wood on Sproles before he could even react.
Larry Foote who is older, has made plays for us using both his body and brain.

Yea Ray is still great
Not as quick as he was in his prime, but no 34 year old player is in this league. Still the best MLB in the game. That Sproles tackle just shows people how dominant Ray can be. We needed someone to step up and make a play to end it, and it did not surprise us that Ray was the one who got it done.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Ray makes plays because he is prepared
and watches tape better than anyone in the league. Players who come to Baltimore say they never watched tape the way Ray does and have learned so much from him. He is not as fast or as solid a tackler but makes up for most of that with good instincts and positioning.
To us Ravens fans, he is the best LB ever to play the game and we’d love to have him as a coach after his playing days are over. Until then, we’ll continue to enjoy his leadership and motivation to the younger guys on and off the field.

I understand where your coming from as a Ravens fan
But LT is hands down the greatest. At least in my opinion.
Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain. Lily Tomlin
LT was a little different though
As he was pure pass rush. Ray is the best MLB of all time, no doubt. LT is right next to him because he reeked havoc on the outside. But in the middle of the field, no one better than Ray.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
LT was pure athleticism
while Ray is strong a great hitter and the smartest to ever play the position, which is why he is still efective at a time when most players drafted in 1996 are long gone or at least not playing such a physically demanding position.

My question, how surprised are by the performane of Ray Rice? I always thought he was destined to be a good player but he seems to be exceeding expectations.
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
Zack Follett: he will hurt your mind.
Really not surprised at all
We all knew from the little we saw last year that he could definitely be an every down back. I think where most fans are surprised is that he is doing this well in only his 2nd year. If anything, we expected him to get these types of stats in his 3rd or 4th year. The part of his game that I did not know was this good is his pass catching. He is by far the best RB in the league at catching a pass and turning it up field.
Really is an incredible player.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
I for one am pleasantly surprised
I knew he had potential to be good, but this good? He put about 15 pounds of muscle on his upper body and for a guy that is really only around 5’8", he is now around 210 pounds, which is why the little man is making so many miss when they try to arm tackle him on his upper body. That’s why he can also run between the tackles which he did at Rutgers while 15 pounds lighter. However, like most Ravens fans, we think the team and especially Flacco has fallen head over heels in love with Rice and we’ve neglected giving the ball to both McGahee and LeRon McClain when they deserve and could have helped. Plus Flacco reads down to Rice way too quick in passing situations.
