Tuesday Notes: Lions Expected to Be $35 Million Under Salary Cap

  • I want to clear up something about the UFA list I posted yesterday... Just because a player is on that list does not mean he won't be a Lion next season.  The list simply means that those players will become free agents on February 27 since they don't have contracts.  The Lions can and will bring back some of them by handing out new contracts.  There was also some confusion over Jason Hanson.  He is not really an unrestricted free agent due to some rule that dates back to his original contract.  I'm not sure of the specifics, but there is no way Hanson won't be on the Lions if he is in the NFL.
  • According to Tom Kowalski, the Lions are expected to be $35 million under the salary cap on February 27.  If they went ahead and decided to release Daunte Culpepper or Jon Kitna, that would be an even bigger number.
  • Roy Williams is on the cover of the 2009 Lions calendar since he was traded after it was made.
  • A story from the Newport News Daily Press provided an update on Michael Vick's lawsuit against a financial firm co-owned by Lions safety Daniel Bullocks. (HT: Tom Kowalski)

I believe with Hanson it was becuase

he was given the transition tag several years ago and, if necessary, could end up with the franchise tag this year if he doesn’t sign. I don’t believe there’s any way Hanson isn’t a Detroit Lion for the remainder of his career.

Even if the calendar was made before Roy was traded...

…he was still in the final year of his contract, so there was a chance he’d be with another team anyway.

Next time, the folks who made this calendar may wan to check the player’s contract status, shouldn’t be too difficult.’

Yeah, this seems like...

it could have easily been avoided. Even before the season, few thought that he would be with the Lions in ’09. Typical Lions blunder!

Photoshop

Maybe they’re waiting to see who gets drafted with the #20 pick and then they’ll photoshop his face over Roy’s.

Hanson

I read a few different League sources saying the talkes between the Lions and his agent are not going well. As much as it pains me to say it I hope the Lions let him go. He should be allowed to go to a team to compete for a championship. The Lions won’t be ready for that in 09

You got links to those sources?

I believe that Hanson will retire a Lion, playing in Detroit his entire career.
