Is Stafford that much better than Sanchez ?

Look, im not for drafting a QB first but i know that Schwartz & Co. seem deadset on drafting one.  After looking at those mock drafts from ESPN and other sites, It seems as if the consensus pick is Matthew Stafford.  In my opinion, Mark Sanchez is a better big game player than Stafford.  Stafford lost 2 BIG games to Florida and Alabama while Sanchez took it to the Nittany Lions in the Rose Bowl, which is in my opinion, the best performance by a QB all year.

What makes a team draft one QB over another ?  Is it strictly the combine, is it how a QB plays in the big games when everything is on the line ? Is it stats based ? Is it the career ?  I dont even pretend to know, but if i where making the decision it would be based on how a QB performs on the biggest stage with all eyes on him and if thats the case then i would draft Mark Sanchez.

Just my two cents....

Remember

When the 49ers had the 1st overall pick and the two best QB’s in the draft were Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers? Well no one could decide who was better really ,so the 49ers just took Smith because he was from the area and had a pretty good combine numbers, and then Aaron Rodgers ended up going 14th and being better. Well they passed on a few pro-bowlers because they needed a “Franchise QB” and Smith was the “best” available. I see this as the same kind of situation, we need a franchise QB but there isn’t any clear cut prospect so we are just going to take the best QB even though he might not be worth the #1 overall pick.

Here's the difference

Stafford has the arm, Sanchez has the instincts.

Stafford is inconsistant, Sanchez is consistent, but has only 16 starts.

Personally, I think if the Lions pass on both, one will be available at 20th.

The question is…Why waste a #1 on a QB when there will be 5-6 1st rounders next year?

The goal this year should be to get the Defense out of the cellar. I don’t understand why everyone thinks Detroit needs a QB when the passing offense was ranked the highest.

Defense, rushing offense. 30th and 32nd last year.

Combine and Pro Days

The Combine and Pro Days will tell the story of who is the better QB. At this time last year Brian Brohm was in consideration for the first overall pick and he fell to the 2nd round and struggled when asked to be a backup in Green Bay

The way I hear it: Stafford has a better arm, but Sanchez moves better in the pocket. Stafford has played more and against better competition. Stafford also played with a patchwork offensive line this past year in Georgia and some think this adversity gives Stafford a slight edge.

I’ll say this and keep saying it: The Lions MUST take a QB with the first overall pick.

Hit the nail on the head. People are worried about the qb situation when the O line is what needs to be worried about. No qb is gonna succeed here till that is fixed PERIOD. We have 5 qbs. Do not waste a 1st pick. Like CLF said, there will be qbs to choose from next year if one of our 5 doesnt work out.

agreed

I agree build the O line and defence, like any stupid lion fan I don’t want to rule out a bad season next year. If we pick wisely with our first 3 picks I don’t think theres any reason we can’t hang with the bears or packers or vikes. We need a QB to manage the game and a defence to keep us in it.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons were in the exact same situation last year and chose the QB over the LT and look what happened to them. The offensive line is important but the QB is the most important position on the field.

Draft a QB #1 this year and let him sit and learn from Kitna or Dan Orlovsky. If another LT presents itself in the draft, take him. Also take a chance on a LT in free agency (maybe Khalif Barnes). If neither work out – draft a LT at the top of next year’s draft when the Lions go 3-13. That way the LT (who should be ready to be a starter) and the QB are ready to play at the same time.

Yes but....

The Falcons also had 2 picks in the first round and took a LT with their second one. They also got a stud RB in free agency. Matt Ryan was a phenomenal rookie but he had A LOT of help and part of that was a solid O-Line.

Ryan

Was also a Senior.

Yup

Having an extra year in college is a huge difference as well.

I'm not sure how you "know" that

Schwartz is deadset on a quarterback at 1-1 in the draft. You got a link for that?

I’d have to disagree and say that he’ll look for the best player at the position he’s picking. There are a lot more priorities than a QB and this years crop of them aren’t that great. I’d rather have Sanchez than Stafford just for the intangibles. Neither is as good as Ryan or Flacco was last year and probably not as good as some of next years guys. Take an OT or D and wait on a QB until next year.

Looking at who’s saying what in mock drafts, especially before the combine, is a joke. No “prognosticator” (Hair Boy or McShay, you know, guys who talk a big game but are still guessing) will pick who’s taking who in the draft. All Kiper does is guess then slam teams for not agreeing with him. Those guys don’t know crap.

No Qb!

I don’t see how either Qb is a #1 pick. It would be Joey Harrington all over again. I would rather take a Franchise Tackle, Defensive End, or Linebacker. We will be better in the long run to wait till next year for the Qb. Plus do we even know what Stanton has to offer?

Youre right i dont know for certain that its gonna be a QB, but just based on some of his answers it sure looks like it. Sorry if i made it seem like its a definite thing.

Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

If Stafford was a "sure thing"

I’d take him. There is, unfortunately, no such player as a sure thing. There are some that probably won’t be a bust but you never know. I just hope they get the best bang for their buck as the #1 pick is going to cost a lot of them. If it ends up being Stafford or Sanchez, I’d think that means the Lions staff believes they’re the real deal. Hard to guess now, before the combine. It would be nice if there were some better FA QB’s out there. I just hope they drop Culpepper. Sorry if I sounded harsh earlier, it was unintentional.

St. Louis and Seattle

had Hall of Fame offensive tackles last year and had terrible seasons. Offensive Tackle is an important position but is nowhere near as important as the QB position.

Again and again and again The Lions MUST take a QB with the number 1 overall pick

Lions have plenty of other picks to fill needs and 40 million in cap space to bring in more talented players

Even with....

a 62% fail rate of Junior QBs entering the NFL?

Seems foolish to me.

by CLF on Feb 12, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

No offense

But you’re beating a dead horse with this “the Lions must take a QB” thing. They must make moves that will ensure that they will be a good team down the road. If this were last year, I would say it would be foolish not to draft a QB. However, there simply is not enough talent at QB in this year’s draft to use the #1 pick.

Long Term

I am not saying take a QB to start this year. In my plan I would play Kitna or Orlovsky in the first year and maybe let the rookie start the last 3 or 4 games and make him the starter after that
