Wednesday Notes: Lions Negotiating with Dan Orlovsky
- Although a decision hasn't been made yet, it certainly seems like Jon Kitna will be released in the near future. He is set to receive a $1 million roster bonus in March, and since Daunte Culpepper's contract has already been restructured, it appears that he is the veteran QB the Lions want on the roster going forward. There is no point to keep Kitna around, as it would be a waste of money and likely simply hurt the team's chemistry in the locker room (assuming Kitna isn't the starter).
- Tom Kowalski briefly mentioned in a recent column that the Lions are negotiating with Dan Orlovsky, who will become a free agent later this month. Orlovsky is open to returning to Detroit, and the Lions seem to want him back. My take is that if they can spend a reasonable amount of money on Orlovsky, it would make sense to bring him back. He did an alright job as a starter last season, and at the very least he would be a solid backup QB. My guess is that if a deal were to happen between Orlovsky and the Lions, it would happen only after Orlovsky tests the free agent waters and finds out what he could make with other teams.
- Jim Schwartz said on Tuesday that the Lions aren't a team that is in position to go after players like Mike Vick and Pacman Jones.
- A decision apparently hasn't been made yet, but Schwartz hinted that the Lions will run a 4-3 defense.
- Tom Lewand was suspiciously vague on Tuesday about the possibility of the Lions changing their logo and uniforms.
- The Broncos released Dre' Bly on Tuesday.
- The NFL Combine officially gets started today.
