Lions Sign Receiver Byrant Johnson
According to PFT's Mike Florio, the Lions have signed former 49ers wide receiver Bryant Johnson. The deal for the former first-round pick is worth $9 million over three years. Johnson spent the first five seasons of his career in Arizona before spending 2008 in San Francisco. He started alongside Isaac Bruce during his only season as a 49er.

Bryant Johnson --
who’s best known for being the Cardinals’ 1st round pick the same year that Anquan Boldin was their 2nd round pick.
One of you Pride of Detroit guys should update his Wikipedia article.

Johnson's numbers...
…are remarkably consistent year-to-year, and reflect those of a #2 or #3 receiver. He’s been healthy at least 14 games every season (16 games in 4 seasons out of 6)
from ESPN stats…

The Lions and the Wide Reciever Situation
If you have not been keeping up…Clayton is coming in for a visit, and Washington decided to sleep on an offer. Clayton is also a possession wide receiver. Washington is the only burner at WR we have had visit. Lions need better wideouts then what the roster currently consists of after Calvin Johnson, they are doing that. Washington or Clayton will be good #2 guys, whomever we end up with. My guess is by the end of the weekend we get one of them. Bryant is a good add, and will be a good slot WR for Detroit. If you look back to Culpeppers days in Minnesota, he had 1 great Wide Reciever, 1 good one, and role players. Then he had Kleinesasser at TE. Detroit is setting Culpepper up for success, all they need assuming we get Washington or Clayton is a TE. If Daunte fails, we need to hope Kitna is still here or Stanton can be what many hoped he can, another McNabb. A guy who can run…with a good arm.
Not many big names want to play for Detroit. I think Mayhew and Schwartz are working well together to put together a solid team to make Detroit successful.

Calyton is nothing special...
… I know the “I had him on my fantasy team” arguement is not a good one. He has had 1 good season, 2006 when he caught for 937 yds. Other than that he averages less than 600 yards a season. I am not saying he wouldn’t be a good adddition, jjust don’t know if he is that much better than other options.

Maybe
They could be adding good depth, I just hope they plan on drafting 5 starters with their 1st 5 picks.

Guys, this is a relatively...
solid pick-up. They are not asking any wide receivers to be anything more than a compliment to Johnson. We don’t need a second top-tier receiver on this team. We’ve tried that experiment too many times. Calvin Johnson is the focus of the offense. They just need one or two more capable receiver behind him that can catch 50 balls or so. Bryant Johnson can do that. Give Calvin a 100 balls a year, 50 to the other Johnson or someone else… I’m happy. Nice pick-up by Detroit.
As for Eric King… I’ve got to tell you… I know about 98% of all the players in the league, but I was left thinking about who this guy actually was. He was a 5th rounder in 2005 and has limited experience. I’m guessing this is a depth guy and not a stab at filling one of the starting positions. Special teamer, maybe.
Another thing… they may not be done with the receiver position in free agency. They could still nab Washington or Clayton. Don’t count out those moves. They need a number three guy as well. One of those guys could battle with B.Johnson for that spot.

It's not finalized yet, from what I can tell
but it should be by later this afternoon.

My only point
Yes they are making small smart moves, and I don’t want to Frankenstien a team together, but they need too sign 2 or 3 legit starters, forget about 3 how about 2 guys that will come in here and start from day one. I keep hearing follow Atlanta blue print, but didn’t Atlanta sign Turner to help turn things around. We need a couple of guys to help, along with good depth.

He still has talent
Lion Success Blueprint:
Step 1) Sign big WR.
Step 2) ……..
Step 3) PROFIT
Most of the league will roll their eyes at more WR’s in detroit, but this guy still has the skills, as long as you have a QB that can get it near him. Figure out what step 2 is, and you guys are in business.
Blind devotion.

True (nice blueprint) but
after the signing of Morris as a back-up to Smith and if they can sign Washington as well and find a decent LG/LT the offense will be much, much improved and will be dangerous this season (except for Culpepper, that is). A QB would be nice (please, don’t draft one).
