New Lions new logo??
I read on Yahoo Sports the Lions plan to change their uniforms for 2010. Not long after I received an e-mail.
I have a friend that works at Reebok. He sent this to me and said he got it from a, "friend who got it from a co-worker in the NFL division of Reebok"
I did'nt think they were going to change the logo. Maybe he's pulling my leg.
Anybody know anything about it??

Terrible logo
I hope this is a joke. While it does follow the basic rules of a logo, one or two colors, simple lines, and the like, I have a few major problems with it. One, it is facing the wrong way. On the players’ helmets it will be facing away from the opponents. Second it looks like the wind is blowing perhaps representing the opposing team. Third it looks like its head is bowed, perhaps turning away from the strong wind. So all combined this logo looks like it is turning away from the opponent with it’s head bowed and shuttering itself from the opponents strong force (represented by the wind). Awful!

Ouch !!
It looks like an arena football team logo, hopefully this is one of many options. We already had the worst team in NFL history, i cant bear having the worst logo in NFL history
Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

logo
yeah I heard something abour changing the logo and the jerseys however I dont think that they will change the logo that much. I actually like our current logo, I wouldnt mind if they jazzed up the jerseys a little bit. Lewand just brought the topic up so im sure all the logos we currently see are flukes. If they changed it as much as this picture I would be pretty sad.

Just keep everything the same except
get rid of the black jerseys. Maybe wear the throwbacks on Thanksgiving Day. The logo above is just plain ugly.

Black Jerseys
use them as the Home Jersey instead of as an alternate we actually seem to win when we we wear black (which by the way i dont think they used them this year) so why not use them more
and by the way no more throwbacks and keep the Logo the same or a big fat 0-16 on the side of the helmet

new look...
I think they should use throwback jerseys for thanksgiving games. They already got rid of the black jerseys, so that’s not an issue, but it wouldn’t be too bad to use them for a rivalry game once a year. As far as a new logo goes, I think they should do something like the eagles did, and just modernize it, but keep the basic look. So essentially same bubbles, but a more streamlined look. But to me, the logo has nothing to do with success, it’s continuity at head coach and the lack of a overall philosophy that the front office has stuck to every year, and also the lack of quality moves in the offseason.

That’s pretty sweet actually. I like that it’s a modernized version of the classic logo. I’d love to see us keep a Honolulu Blue jersey, though.

Nice artwork but...
It’s too complicated for a logo though. Logos are usually simple lines and bold colors. It really shouldn’t have shading or detail like extended claws. Think emblem or badge or comic strip.
Clearly you are a gifted artist but to make a logo you need to hold back a little bit.
(No I’m not an expert, but I did sleep at a Holi…. No seriously, I’m not an expert but I’ve made a study of logos in the different leagues, which work, which don’t, which are ‘classic’ and why. These are my thoughts based on my observations.)
I agree too that we need to keep the Honolulu Blue and Silver colors. To be honest, I am so down on the Lions my devotion is hanging by a thread. If they significantly changed the logo or team colors, I would just use that as an excuse to move on. I’d call my whole Lions fan experience a bad chapter in my life and think of them as defunct. I’ve spent my life as a Lions fan, 46 years, but it’d be over if they changed their whole identity except for their name.
by birdseed on Feb 5, 2009 8:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep. I agree with birdseed
Look at the logos of all 32 teams. They are basic and color-driven. Very few have any true detail to them. Even the most detailed, like the Buccaneers, Raiders or even the Jaguars, have heavy solid lining with color-scheme making the logo look bold and crisp. The edges on your logo are fuzzy – almost giving the effect of hair on the Lion. No one wants a hairy logo! Kidding.. a little.
All of this aside, why on earth are they even changing the logo and unis at all? I love the classic logo and the only true blue-colored jersey left in the league and it is striking. I even like the black detail (not the black jerseys), as it adds a cleanness that the old pre-Millen era jerseys lacked.
To Mayhew & Lewand… leave the logo and jersey alone!!!!!!!

The logo is pretty cool but has too much detail
I’d “dumb it down” a bit, more of a silhouette. The uniform is fugly. Need to stick with the Honolulu and Blue.

I like the logo...
but the colors almost look identical to the Titans actually, just no red. I thinkj if you take the layout you have, but use honolulu blue, silver, and black, it would look awesome. The only other thing is the face looks borderline cutesy, so I’d work on that. But if they were to change the look, I’d like it to go in this direction, that retains the original feel, much like the broncos(well, they changed the logo alot, but the colors were retained) and eagles have done.

Great!
I like the logo zelleydesigns! It remains faithful to our history. I don’t think it’s too complicated at all. Anything compared to what we have will be considered complicated. Let’s face it…our old logo looks like an ink-blot. I love the idea of a blue helmet. I can’t think of anybody in the league that has a blue helmet. Oh wait…broncos… bears….and bills….but those might as well be black helmets. At least we won’t look like the Cowboys on road games. But keep the Honolulu Blue for sure! NOBODY has Honolulu Blue helmets!!

Great logo, but why not go with the dark blue and all steel helmet look? Those unis are some of my favorites.

MUCH BETTER!
But the uniform kinda looks like the Toronto Argonauts. I really hope they don’t go dark. So many teams with blue in their scheme usually go Navy Blue or might-as-well-be-black blue.

new logo suggestion
I really like what Matt came up with, however I thought I’d throw my logo suggestion in the mix as well. It’s essentially the New Jersey Pride logo (professional lacrosse team), however I incorporated a Detroit “D” in the mane. This’d give the Lions 2 logos; whereas we could have just the “D” logo or the entire Lion head logo on our helmets. Forgive the quality, I don’t have possess any graphic design skills so it’s just a picture of the logo I drew on a piece of paper…

Revised Uniforms
Most of the feedback I’m getting is pretty much the same…not too many fans of that uniform design. So here are some other options I threw together…

Revised Uniforms
I love your talent Zelley! I like #7, how about switching up the gray on the jersey with black. The white lines through the jersey could be black, just the outlines.. And maybe add black outline along the gray stripes on the pants. The socks could be all white. I really like #6 as the away jersey also, pretty much as is. I do however love our Logo, minor tweaks to allow seperation would be really all it needs. I love the simplicity of it.

I know everyone is having fun designing...
new unis for the Lions. Some are quite interesting. But we have to let it be known to the powers that be with the Lions that we fans DO NOT WANT to change the logos and uniforms!!!
I know that the Lions’ history is less than desirable, but there is still history there. The leaping lion is part of that history and the color-scheme is beyond traditional. The strongest point of this argument is that the Lions already have the BEST UNIFORM in the league. Sorry for the caps (it’s one of my pet peeves, too), but I feel very strongly about not changing the uniforms.
For those that feel as I do… we need to do something. I think throwing around all of these “new logos” just softens the fans to the fact that we are going to make a change. Let’s make a stand instead. NO NEW UNIFORMS OR LOGOS!
by DrewsLions on Feb 6, 2009 9:27 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
i'm just saying
the patriots, bucs, and broncos all won superbowls after changing their unis and logos. you could throw in the ravens too since they used to be the browns. the giants went retro with their logo and won a superbowl (this is what i’d like to see the lions do….get rid of the black outline).
by wumanchu01 on Feb 6, 2009 12:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
C'mon...
as a passionate football fan, you should know that it takes more than a jersey change to win. The notion that those teams won super bowls was because of that is beyond ridiculous. Forget Tom Brady and John Elway… the real reason these teams won was the colors and scheme made everyone feel all warm and fuzzy about themselves, right? Give me a break… I hate that argument. If Lions players are so insincere and self-indulgent that they are not playing well because they don’t “look good enough”, we’ve got much bigger problems than we think.
by DrewsLions on Feb 6, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
haha relax drew
I was totally joking with that comment. I do NOT think there is any correlation between unis and winning. There’s really only one reason I’d like to see a uni change and that’s cuz every time i see the current ones it reminds me of Millen. This isn’t a high priority to me, I’m just saying it’d be nice.
by wumanchu01 on Feb 6, 2009 4:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Dress for success
Actually, what uniform does have a mental effect on how you see yourself. Many people few the Lions as losers. Hard to argue when you go 0-16. Yes, Tom Brady, and John Elway and other pro-bowl players are what made those teams so great. But self image has something to do with how you perform. As fans, we love our team, we love our history and traditions. But players are not fans. More almost all of them, when they join the Lions, it’s the first time they have any real connection with the club. To players coming to the Lions….our logo and uniform means one thing….losers. It’s hard to dress for successes when you have to where the uniform and logo of a team who’s best known for being bad. It really is tie for a change.
by BlueMane on Feb 6, 2009 9:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I’m not saying to change the uniform just for the sake of changing the uniform, but images and symbols can have pretty powerful effects on psychology. I love the traditional symbol as much as anything, but if we really want to change the mentality and culture of the team, changing the logo to an upgraded/modernized version of the traditional leaping lion might not be a terrible idea. A new logo could help reinforce a new identity as a team and the new mentality that it seems Schwartz wants to bring to the locker room. If we want to be more competitive and aggressive wearing a uniform with a more aggressive pattern and logo can help to reinforce those ideas.

Are you guys serious?
Nothing is going change a losing mindset except bringing in some talent and putting up a few wins. A jersey change will not solve any problems. I’ve said this many times… the Lions already have the best uniforms in the league. Let’s drop this notion before we ruin an already great look.
by DrewsLions on Feb 6, 2009 10:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Uniforms aren't all
I should have made it clear that building talent through free agency and a couple of excellent drafts will be required, but the mindset part was for the players that will be coming in to the lions. I’d be hard pressed to believe that free agents or incoming college players would have the same ties to the traditional designs as the fanbase does.
For the incoming rookies, that symbol has been synonymous with one of the worst teams in the league since they started their career as freshmen in high school. I’m not saying that a new logo itself would turn us into the Broncos or Pats, but it could help incoming players mindset by telling them hey, you’re on the ground floor of something new here, winning.

everyone has a right to their own opinion...
…but i love the idea of the lions getting a new logo and uni’s (but KEEP the current color-scheme, or only tweak it). A new logo could help to change the attitude and fortunes of the fans and the organization. The one issue is that the Lions management team doesn’t exactly have a track record of getting things right, however.
As for Zelleys jersey post, I’d roll with #6 & #8, and maybe throw some vintage stripes on the socks… As for his helmets, I think there’s too much detail to include his full lion logo, but the Lion head (much like my suggestion) would look great!
by BriansLions on Feb 6, 2009 11:13 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
A new uniform won't change anything
it’s players, coaching and performance that will change Detroit around. Some of these ideas are cool to look at but I agree with DrewsLions, keep what we have, no changes to the logo or color scheme.

Great Update
Zelley, great job on the update to the current Lions logo! I’d love to see them go in this direction. My only negative would be that there may be too much detail to include the full body of a lion on the helmets, thus why the current logo works, because it’s so minimalistic. This is a VERY small issue, however. Overall that logo rocks!

It will not happen.
The Lions will stay with the Honolulu Blue and Silver with minor modifications and “bubbles” will remain on the helmets. Much preferred than the arena football look above.

Not this year
2010. Logo change.
And sorry Jettero2112. Honolulu blue is a queer color(NTTATWWT). It’s time to change. That secondary logo has NFL written all over it. Hell, look at the logos of the Broncos, Titans, Panthers, Patriots… Zelley’s secondary logo fits right in that mix….color scheme and all. And get this straight, this is a discussion of a logo change…words like “will not” are not allowed in a discussion. I wouldn’t visit a blog of such a pessimistic fan.
Zelly, you should call that blue, “Detroit Blue”… a deep dark blue to represent the hard working dedicated blue collar worker of Detroit/Michigan. “Michigan Silver”…a combination of chrome and precious metal that represents the product , beauty and value the state of Michigan has to offer. (How’s that for a sales pitch?)

Stick to tradition and KEEP the best logo/uniform in the league. I just can’t believe that this many Lions fans want to change it!! Mind-boggling. Sorry, but all options shown above too cartoonish and are NOT upgrades over what we have. I wish Lewand would never have opened this unfortunate can of worms. I think that Lewand was referring to very subtle changes, now everyone takes it to the extreme and wants in on the designing process. Sad.

As for pessimistic, I’ve probably been rooting for the Lions longer than you’ve been alive. I’m a die hard fan who lives and dies with this team, no matter how they play. They may piss me off, and have for sure the last 8 years. I’ve lived with their losing for decades and still hope they win every game, no matter how they’re playing or who they’re playing. To base reading someone’s blog because of your irrelevant comprehension of someone you don’t knows team loyalties is, in it self, irrelevant. Don’t care. Just never question my loyalty to the Lions. You don’t have the right.

Take a look at what Denver did to their logo. Zelley has created an upgrade which should be considered.
Bubbles represents 51 years of futility. He needs to be retired. A new chapter needs to be started.

I'll agree with you on one point...
Denver’s logo was an upgrade. It’s simple, bold and contrasts well on the helmet. The logo above is far too busy. Again… not an upgrade.
CLF, you have to understand why some fans and people on this site are a little upset about this. Tradition is tradition. History is history. The Lions have had a unique and fantastic look for a lot of years now. Some of us have grown to love this. No, it hasn’t been great losing all these years. But nonetheless, it is our heritage as Lions fans. Now, I can see if the Lions had something like the old creamsicle Bucs jerseys or a horrible color scheme. Fine. Go ahead and make a change. But they don’t. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. They have the best uniform / logo / color scheme in the league. Just respect the views of us traditionalists, that’s all.

Bubbles is a loser...
It’s time for a change.
Tampa’s Cream-sicle jerseys might’ve looked cool if they had been successful. Honolulu blue IS the cream-sicle color of blue…. and if the Lions have had success with it, then it might still be cool.
Bubbles represents a negative losing image, whether you ‘older than I’ fans want to admit or not. All I know is that when the players put on the current uniforms or find that they’ve been traded to the Lions… What do they see?
You are what you wear. The quickest way to change the losing culture is to change the color scheme and logo.
I love ya Bubbles, but its time to go…. I look forward to seeing you during ‘throwback’ games.
And to Jettero… sorry if I attacked your manhood… I should’ve said that Honolulu blue is a very feminine color.

it’s just the 21st century and there’s no place for bigots here.
The Lions added the “bubbles” logo in 1970. They’ve had the Honolulu Blue and Silver pretty much since the beginning, both through winning decades and losing decades.
Again, changing colors or logos doesn’t help a team win. Players and coaches help teams win. It’s all about performance, not what color your uniform’s are.
