My 2009 NFL Draft Projection
Alright, so I was tired of working all week on school work and decided to take a much needed break today. While I took that break, I spent a little bit of time thinking about the upcoming NFL Draft and decided to have some fun with it. Below are my draft predictions. I will revise them if necessary before the draft, but I want to see how many I can get right. If Detroit signs their guy before the actual draft day (sort of like what the Texans did with Mario Williams), I will leave my pick (right or wrong) and count it as if it were draft day. I also have provided explainations as to why I think the players will go where they are listed.
NOTE: I have not taken notes from Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay from ESPN. I can't stand those guys, they have agendas, and I'm not down with that. In other words, I keep it real. lol Admittedly, some of this is what I think SHOULD happen. Obviously, they don't ask my opinion and it may very well be much different than this. Tell me what you think though.
Round One
1. Detroit Lions - OT Jason Smith
With the Lions picking up a SOLID LB in Julian Peterson, it seems as though they can afford to go another direction. Clearly, it would be most beneficial for the Lions to shore up their offensive line. Hence, the pick above.
2. St. Louis Rams - OLB Aaron Curry
The Rams get lucky here and pick up one of the best OLBs to come out of the draft in a while.
3. Kansas City Chiefs - OT Eugene Monroe
If the Lions don't take Curry, I think the Chiefs will. However, in this scenario, the Chiefs have to give Cassell time in the pocket, something Thigpen and Huard aren't used to in KC. Monroe is a solid pick in this case and KC would get their money's worth.
4. Seattle Seahawks - DT B.J. Raji
With both of the major OTs taken already, the Seahawks would need to focus on defense here. Raji is one of the only DTs that is worth drafting this high, and they have been said to be in need on the D-line.
5. Cleveland Browns - DE Brian Orakpo
He can also play OLB according to many analysts, and pass rushing is something the Browns definitely don't seem to have down. Maybe Brian can help them out in that department.
6. Cincinnati Bengals - WR Michael Crabtree
The only reason he slips this far is because of an injury he suffered (and had to have consequent surgery on) during this offseason. He is going to be a great receiver in this league, and has been compared to Calvin Johnson in terms of ability. With the loss of TJ Housh, they need to give Palmer someone to throw to other than Ocho Cinco.
7. Oakland Raiders - WR Jeremy Maclin
If the Raiders had not selected JaMarcus Russell recently, I would throw in Stafford here. But, they will continue to build their offense after drafting McFadden and Bush last year with bring in a great potential receiver in Maclin.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars - QB Matthew Stafford
He only drops to #8 because teams before this are not needing QBs (besides Detroit, of course). The Jaguars are going to need to build up Stafford, as he has a lot of hoops to jump through before he will be ready to start. Garrard can give him someone to train under for a year, and they can send Garrard packing to another team for some good compensation.
9. Green Bay Packers - DE Everette Brown
The Packers need a good pass rusher to help out in the defense with A.J. Hawk. I think Brown will have a better career in the NFL than Aaron Maybin, and so, I have to put him here instead.
10. San Francisco 49ers - DE Aaron Maybin
The 49ers are also in need of pass rushing quality increases, so Maybin will be drafted here. His productivity will warrant the pick, but they will wish they could have picked Brown instead. I would have almost placed QB Mark Sanchez here, but the 49ers just re-did Alex Smith's contract.....hmmmm.
11. Buffalo Bills - TE Brandon Pettigrew
He's the best TE on the board, and they are in need of someone to pass block and steal a defender off of T.O....Pettigrew will prove to be a good TE in this league most likely.
12. Denver Broncos - DE Tyson Jackson
The Broncos run a 3-4 scheme and Jackson is idea in that regard. Pretty much everyone is saying that the Broncos have their eyes on Jackson, hoping he will still be around. I am sure he will be.
13. Washington Redskins - OT Michael Oher
Honestly, the OT class is so good this year, Oher is a steal at this pick, even with two other OTs being drafted already high up. He's had a much better showing than Alabama's Andre Smith in front of the pro scouts, which leads me to believe that the teams will take a chance on him first easily. Can you imagine Portis, Santana Moss, and Jason Campbell lighting it up with a little extra O-line help? Potentially electric.
14. New Orleans Saints - CB Malcom Jenkins
Mel Kiper, Jr. has the Saints pick RB Knowshon Moreno here, when they already have Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas in the backfield. This is why you don't listen to Mel Kiper, Jr. The Saints are in DIRE need of shoring up their secondary. Malcom Jenkins is a steal here for them.
15. Houston Texans - OLB Brian Cushing
I really don't have a reason for this other than the players that should be going this early will not be because they don't need the positions. However, the Texans are not THAT deep in their linebacker core.
16. San Diego Chargers - DE Robert Ayers
Why not? The Chargers aren't going to select Moreno with L.T. being re-signed, and they can always use a new and improved defense back there.
17. New York Jets - QB Mark Sanchez
Kellen Clemens as your starting QB after Brett Favre? The J-E-T-S...JETS, JETS, JETS fans are going to be dying for someone worth a damn under center. Enter Mark Sanchez, probably the better of the two QBs in the draft, but that's not how they will be drafted. If the Jets don't take them, the Bears, Bucs, or Lions will.
18. Chicago Bears - ILB Rey Mauluga
This guy fits right in with the Bears' hard-nosed approach to defense...and some of those guys are getting older.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - WR Percy Harvin
Their WR depth chart got really old really quickly. If McCown is going to have even a decent year, he needs an electric receiver. Harvin can be that guy if given the opportunity.
20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas) - DT Peria Jerry
Yes, Detroit could draft two defensive players in the first round. Did I mention they were last in many "D"-related categories? Peria Jerry could be an excellent addition and would make the Lions fans unusually happy with the way the draft went for once (sans Calvin Johnson and Kevin Smith).
21. Philadelphia Eagles - CB Vontae Davis
They lost Brian Dawkins in the secondary. Why not treat yourself to a young, talented secondary addition?
22. Minnesota Vikings - WR Hakeem Nicks
This guy can help bring some pressure off of deep threat Bernard Berrian. The Vikings having two good WRs?? Say it ain't so!
23. New England Patriots - DE Clay Matthews
The Pats are definitely good on offense. They'd be silly to go anywhere the the defensive line here.
24. Atlanta Falcons - DB Sean Smith
Defense is key for the Falcons in this draft, who had to outscore a lot of their opponents for wins.
25. Miami Dolphins - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey
Chad Pennington having another solid receiver to throw to will make the Dolphins even scarier in the AFC East.
26. Baltimore Ravens - ILB James Laurinaitis
They can sense that Ray Lewis is on his last legs like I can sense the sun coming up tomorrow morning. It's just on the horizon.
27. Indianapolis Colts - RB Bonzi Wells
Call me crazy, but I feel like they should draft a QB right about now to train under Peyton Manning during his last years as the Colts living legend. They won't do that though, and that is why they will probably go with a young RB to back up Addai.
28. Philadelphia Eagles (from Carolina) - OT Will Beatty
McNabb needs help back there. Too many forced turnovers, and they can address that here.
29. New York Giants - S Louis Delmas
He's been surprising people in the combines, and he can help out the G-men's defense here.
30. Tennessee Titans - DT Ziggy Hood
Obviously, an attempt needs to be made to close the gap left by big Haynesworth's departure.
31. Arizona Cardinals - OLB Larry English
They showed signs of needing strength in their pass rush throughout the playoffs. Though he may not be a usual first round pick, he will be drafted based on best available at the position.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers - C Alex Mack
He's a solid center who can be turned into an amazing offensive linemen for the Steelers. Big Ben will need that in the coming years if he continues to get beat up.
And just for fun...
33. Detroit Lions - QB Josh Freeman
I think the Lions should take a chance here and see what they can make out of him. You never know, and he's been impressing people quietly at the combines. If they don't take him, than they could take Alex Mack if the Steelers don't, since Dominic has been giving us issues.

I think you did a good job...and at least articulated unlike
the stupid Mel Kiper, well just because theory.
Three things however:
1) The Lions should not take a chance on Freeman at the 2-1 spot, and Duke Robinson would be a GREAT pick up if he fell here, if not then Ebon Britton or Mack if he falls. Robinson would be a great addition and allow us some depth and flexibility while deciding the Backus vs Loper debate.
2) I know that, like Millen, you can’t use logic with Al Davis, but I see him possibly going with one of the OT prospects to help out both Russell and McFadden, or a d-line prospect to fill the sapp void.
3) I know that Urlacher is getting old, but what would Maluaga do in that defense, they need safeties and CB’s, so one of the better prospects at those positions could go here, even if a slight reach.

BONZI Wells would get killed as an NFL player… NO WAY ON EARTH L:ions take Freeman (even if he fell to 129 in draft he wont be touched) they ran 14 offensive plays at K.State ( tells you ALOT about him- – - he CANT learn- or cant make certain throws) avg NFL playbook is 244 plays..

Pick #33
I don’t like a QB at all in this draft. An offensive lineman like Britton, Unger, or Robinson would be a great pick up here. Like you, I do not see Andre Smith going in the first round. Some teams may take a chance on him in the second, but the Lions should not be that team.
I know its a lot of work and thought, but the third round will be critical for the Lions. Two picks, and there should be some good quality there.
Who do you see the Lions getting at those spots [#65 and #82]?

Nice Job
If you could give me some help, I don’t like Jerry as a run plugger, at 290lbs and a high motor he sounds like another Redding to me, I think Brace or Hood could do as just as good and are bigger line pluggers than Jerry.

Defensive Line Improvement
I agree, although physically Hood seems very similar to Redding. I really like Brace in the middle. He seems like a younger version of the typical NFL run stuffer [Pat Williams, Grady Jackson, et al]. I would like to hear more about Hood as a possible DE. I understand he is very athletic, while not speedy would be much more effective against the run than a 260 pound Avril type.
I would take Brace with #33 or #65. Sounds like he is likely to go somewhere in the second round.
The scenario of Jason Smith at #1, Maualuga at #20, Brace at #33, and best available defensive player from Cody Brown, Louis Delmas[unlikely here], Hood [unlikely], Harris/Byrd/Mickens, Vaughn and many others at #65, is sounding better and better to me. I like Curry a lot but, the mix of players available this year in the second and third rounds makes the pick of Jason Smith at #1 fit a lot better.

Don’t think anyone could be that upset with the Lion’s picks except Freeman. If you are going to reach at 33 I’d rather go with Andre Smith and his potential, and look for QB next year in Mccoy, Bradford, or Snead(if he goes out early).
Also, I doubt KC will pick up Monroe. They have a LT in Albert. Yes, they would get their money worth but will most likely draft another position.

I was just having a little fun there at #33…it’s not going to happen.

Really?
Two of the Lions first 3 picks are offense? Perish, forbid!
I do not see Cushing going that high.
No Moreno?
I think the Dolphins will likely go LB with the first pick.

I was just messing around with #33.
I’m not saying that will happen.

Good Lions picks..
but i think the two and three picks would be flipped around. SF i think needs a QB b.c smith hasnt one anything. A TE at #11 seems a little high so i think if they wanted him they could trade down and get him later. I think Heyward-Bey is the better WR in this draft due to a few recent problems with Hicks. Idk if ravens would go MLB considering they just resigned Ray Lewis so i think they could go a different direction and Indy drafted a RB last year and they have a good one right now. A #33 i could see Lions goin for defense. Nice picks otherwise!
