#1 Pick will be a left tackle, not Stafford
Lions beat reporter Tom Kowalski writes that he's "more and more convinced" Detroit will take a left tackle No. 1 overall.
Kowalski says it'll be Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith, likely based on which is willing to take a cheaper contract. Kowalski doesn't think the Lions are sold on Matt Stafford and expects them to make a run at Jay Cutler on draft day. Cutler would at least cost Detroit its second first-round pick (No. 20).
I like Stafford, but this seems to be a really smart plan. Cutler hates the new Bronco regime and I thought Stafford looked a lot like him, so go with the proven entity. Love it, looking forward to the 2009 Lions!

Sounds good to me.
Personally I like Jason Smith more, but Eugene Monroe is not very far off.
I think this is the best way for the Lions to go, and will be very happy if this comes to pass.
nice!!
I hope that we could score Cutler on draft day for our 20th pick. Or maybe even the 33. Im just wondering who we would look at for our MLB if we trade our 20 spot. Could it be Laurinaitis at 33 or Jasper Brinkley in the 3rd round. Interesting. Anyways I cant wait to see what they do and for the start of the season. Cutler would be awesome as a lion
although
maybe since he is acting like this with the broncos then he would opt to not play for the lions because he doesnt want to. This situation isnt making him look good either. I just read that his preferances are Tennessee or Chicago so who knows and if he is holding out in Denver then maybe he will if he goes to Detroit. It might be better if we get Pat White in the third round of the draft to try him out. THen we can still get Maualuga at the 20 an olineman number 1 and a dt number 33
I say...
…take Monroe or Smith with #1, then trade #20 and a 3rd or 4th rounder next year (or Stanton?) for Cutler. Then take a DT or MLB at #33.
If you think about....
…the Broncos can get Freeman or Sanchez, hell Stafford might even be available depending on how this plays out. They can even package the picks and trade up into the top 10 to get one.
Who would of thought...
That Cutler being traded to the Lions is a realistic possibility. This draft, as well as the upcoming season has the potential to be a lot of fun
Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.
Anyone who read that...
…and didn’t smile a little bit needs to have their head examined. That was awesome just to think about. I got my hopes up a little bit because of it, but I’ll stay grounded for now. Even if we just draft an OT and the Cutler thing doesn’t happen, I’d be happy enough. Getting Cutler would be amazing. Either way, it will be fun to see what transpires.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
PLUS
You want Cutler on your team after this…he’s got something to prove after the way he explained that the meeting with McDaniels went…
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
Well since this is what the Killer thinks I'm conviced Stafford is the pick
It always seems like the Lions use Kowalski to distribute false information. Or maybe one can hope and this tactic is gone too with Millen.
I SAY NO TO CUTLER.....AND, THIS IS WHY
We don’t want someone else’s problem child…..I say we stack our defense with the draft picks we have…..yeah, I know we need a good left tackle too. Defense wins games. Our defense couldn’t have stopped the Wolverines last year (no disrespect to my fav college team intended…well, maybe a little disrespect…..but, said with lots of love!). Culpepper can put up some points for the offense, plus his big arm will open up the run for Smith. I don’t think it’s worth it to get Cutler……we need the cash he presumably will ask for and we don’t need to spend our 2nd first round pick on him. I like the idea of picking up Pat White or another QB in the later rounds. Plus, next year’s draft will be much better for QB’s……..I’ve been a diehard Lion fan for over 40 years……and, I will always be a Lion fan.
What you are failing to see is...
….the new management started the problem in Denver by talking of trading him behind his back when he was drafted as their franchise QB. I’m with Cutler on this one, honestly.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
"failing to see"??
It’s the J-O-B of any head coach to try and make his team better if he thinks he can. So what that “new management talked behind his back” when they tried to trade him??…Maybe Cutler should have used it as an opportunity to show his new head coach that he’s a better QB than what they may have traded for. I think that the new Denver coach is handling this situation just the way he should. Cutler needs to quit crying and leave the hurt feelings at home. Bottom line I say Cutler should have just sucked it up and worked at what they’re paying him for.
No way this happens
The Broncos could get much more value than the #20th pick don’t you think? There are several teams above #20 that would probably offer their first + more for Cutler which would give them a better chance of picking up Sanchez.

being a bronco fan i ultimately want cutler to stay but if wounds cant be healed, the talk in bromco land is that the broncos (mcdaniels) wants to win now and wants a proven qb. talks are now that if he were to get traded it would be for a proven qb and a high draft pick or a first and second round pick. the broncos r definately looking for a 2nd, 2nd round pick. thats why on nfl network and espn are saying that cleveland seem to be a better suiter. ive heard that its a possibilty that it would be for brady quinn and a 2nd rnd pick. which makes sense because quinn already knows the patriot offense working under weiss. but anything can happen.
if he does go to the lions, it would not be for the first overall pick because they dont want the cap costs.
