my mock draft rounds 1-3
#1a-LB Aaron Curry- makes the LB crops a big strength on this team
#1b-DT Peria Jerry - starter next to grady jackson
#2-OT william beatty- starter at LT, moves backus to guard
#3A- CB asher allen- adds depth and possible starter by end of season
#3B-TE cornelius ingram- a steal, who probably wouldve been a late 1st rd pick if not missed 2008 season.
probably most of you have noticed that i didnt include a QB in this mock draft, for the most part im against drafting a QB, i feel that the lions have much bigger needs than at QB, but i would love for them to get a steal in pat white or graham harrell. For QBs next year i want the lions to either trade for cutler, go with culpepper, one thing i really want to happen is see drew stanton given a chance and then if he doesnt work out then go for a QB in the 2010 offseason/draft.

I actually like this mock draft
alot of people have drafts i do not agree with but I would love for this to happen. I do not know if Beatty will be there at 33 but I would be very happy if Pettigrew,TE or C.Johnson,DE were there.

Or Duke Robinson in the Beatty Spot...
But Beatty’s stock keeps rising and he might be a good pick-up. If by some miracle Oher is there at #20, then I would say Oher and then Ziggy Hood or Brace. I like this mock and if it happened like you want RaysofHope I would be very happy. Also, I would even go safety over Allen because I think we can get a starter there rather than a back-up CB. Good mock though and more realistic than most.

if it happened....
I wouldn’t complain. This would make the LB core god adn the DL decent. After this draft I would say our secondary would be the weakest on the D. But if he DL and LB’s can pressure the QB and stop the run then we could live through that.

Third round sucks
Your first three picks could work, but Allen CB and Ingram TE are reaches for the third round in positions that are not critical for Lions success.
How about an ILB[Beckwith LSU, McKillop Pitt, Ellerbe Georgia] and a DE/OLB [pass rusher] [Sidbury Richmond, Brown UConn, Hunt Houston] or another DT [Marks Auburn, Magee Purdue, Baker Hampton] ?
I really want to see the Lions firm up their run defence this draft. They have only added Grady Jackson to help against the run so far.

spread the draft
already hit the LB and DT postions it is stupid to waste all our top picks in 2 postions. if you want to use 6 or 7 rd picks on those postions fine but we need to improve the talent in more than 2 postions to improve this lions team.

I like the first three and i agree to get graham harrell late would be a bonus i think he could be an effective backup and pat white could play in certain areas and be effective like kick returns 3rd down reciever maybe even the 1st year out but i think he would be more of a scheme kind of player than an every down guy so late pickup yeah to both guys

The Lion's new GM
Maybe you should apply to be the GM, this isn’t a bad draft by any means. Lots of holes filled, although not quite as much emphasis on D so it may not pacify Lion’s fans.

One question........
Everybody has seems to love the idea of the lions drafting aaron curry. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have him, but my only issue is this:
In what most lions fans can agree is the most important draft for us in decades, do we really want to risk drafting a player that we won’t have playing his natural position? I think that if any player is capable of making this switch in positions it would be curry. However, I also think if any team had the potential of having a switch like this blow up in their face, it’s the lions.
I think he’ll be a great player, and I wouldn’t complain one bit if we draft him, but i’m just saying there is an obvious risk based on the lions track record

I agree
I think Aaron Curry will be a great player, but I don’t like drafting a guy at number one then moving him to a new position.
I am leaning to an LT at #1, Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith. Hopefully the Lions can sort out which is the better now and has the most upside.
by NorthLeft12 on Mar 19, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Perhaps
Someone can help me out. Why is it that Jason Smith is now rated higher than Monroe? Is it purely because of his combine numbers? He played in a two point stance most of the time. Can he make the adjustments necessary? Why is he considered the better pick when you have someone like Monroe whose workout numbers aren’t quite as good but has shown continuously that he is an elite lineman.
I guess my question comes down to why are people so excited by Smith’s potential while downplaying Monroe’s history?
by WBL on Mar 19, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good Question.
Matt McGuire on WalterFootball.com [http://walterfootball.com/mattblog090318.php] has an excellent post asking that very question. I have to admit that I was swept up by the Jason Smith fever. Stepping back and looking at it now, Monroe is the more accomplished Left Tackle right now [no doubt there], and may likely be in the future.
I am always surprised how some of these experienced football scouts/gurus get so excited over how many ‘reps’ a lineman does. I would hope what a player did in games would matter the most.
I wonder how Barry Sanders did at the combine or at workouts? It would not surprise me if he skipped the whole thing. I think you can over analyze these things.

Only thought
Smith is a great pass protecter from coming out of the 2 point stance, the rest is up to the coaches if they watch the tape and think he can learn the 3 point stance easy, " given smith smarts and work ethic" they probably feel once he learns the 3 point his value goes over monroe

Monroe won't make it out of the top five

I realized
what i typed after i posted. I meant I like Raji and then Monroe for #1. I love Curry, but I’m skeptical now, although Peterson’s 30 or so, so they might be able to put Curry at MLB for a year or two and then move him outside. Even if he’s out of position, he’s an upgrade over Lenon.

$$$$$MONEY$$$$$$
the only way we take Raji is if he agrees to the lowest contract ever given to a #1 pick just sayin
by msivits on Mar 23, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I like it
It’s balanced, addresses several needs, has a realistic chance of happening, and best of all, doesn’t contain a quarterback. Genius!

draft
either monroe or j smith num 1 and hope for maulega at 20 then get j freeman at 33 sorry your draft sucks
TJ
by TJ1978 on Mar 22, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
We have more than three picks
TJ, you must be Freeman’s agent or Mom. Nobody in their right mind is picking him until mid to late third round.
If Maualuga drops to #20, that means there are a lot of questions the other teams have about him. I would skip past him as well and try to get a DT or better, trade down.
The two third round picks the Lions have are critical. They need to get starters with those picks. Any ideas what they should do with them?
by NorthLeft12 on Mar 22, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry
if Maualuga drops to us at 20 we bette take him!

this is a joke
you know whats funny? everyone says to pass on stafford, hes got too many questions blah blah blah, and you know what? thats why you are sitting at home and not in the organization. If we dont draft stafford whatever team he goes to will burn us fro the next 15 years and you all know it. All of you saying pass on him will be all up in arms saying why did we pass on stafford? blah blah blah. its retarded. someone commented that we will be picking in the top 10 again next year. well thats true, dauntes old and fat, stanton isnt " ready" and drew henson isnt made for the nfl. so go ahead draft some left tackle or linebacker. and if we pass on stafford i hope he walks into detroit and beats the crap out of us for the next 15 years ,just like adrien peterson was passed up, guess what we get to see him rush for 150 on us twice every year! thats great. all the lions fines are hipacrits and im ashamed that i call myself a lions fan if curry and smith are so good why did they go to wake forest and baylor? they shined against crappy teams… wow… atleast stafford played in the sec to everyone who says we will just ride it out with culpepper then why not draft stafford? chances are that he will sit on the bench until things get bad… which they will… so he wont get thrown into the fire right away… im with the top two comments draft stafford or he will kill you guys year after year. you are already a joke of the nfl, you pretty much are going to settle for a crappy qb to ride out the year? thats why you guys are at the bottom and will stay at the bottom. grow a pair and draft stafford.

Where to even begin
So if we pick Stafford we won’t be picking in the top 10 next year? Chances are we will be no matter what happens, but if we pick Stafford it is a guarantee. He won’t be thrown to the wolves immediately, only after things go poorly. Even if he did start from the beginning, it would be a train wreck. We need to build positions that can allow us to get better this year, not worry about ones where players would sit on the bench and fail since they don’t have enough talent around them.
And you’re ashamed to be a Lions fan? Your screen name is “Lionsareajoke.” I’m ashamed to be a fan of the same team as you, though it doesn’t seem like you’re a very big one.

Why Peria Jerry?
I don’t doubt he’s a talented Defensive Tackle, but he’s almost exactly the same size as Andre Fluellen (Fluellen is a little bit bigger) who we just spend a third-rounder on last year.
Do we give up on an Under-tackle we just drafted #87 overall?
Nose tackle is a bigger need (Jackson is really old and Chuck Darby just won’t cut it—see: “2008 Lions Defense”). I’d rather take Maualuga at #20 (if we didn’t take Curry #1), or Alex Mack than Jerry, and then take somebody like Ron Brace in the 2nd or Chris Baker in the 3rd.
We really NEED to upgrade the DT spot to get the most out of our linebackers, but I feel like Jerry offers us more of what we already have.

you have GOT to be kidding me
why would you (1) draft a linebacker at the #1 spot. (2) draft a linebacker that hasn’t played one day a middle linebacker. (3) draft a linebacker that hasn’t played the position when there are 2 other MLB’s that have played it and very well (OSU and USC). Stop with the experiments. All of you Curry fans are just as bad as the GM’s that were previously there. If you think about it.. some of today’s high impact LB’s that are in the league right now… were not even 1st rounds picks. Come on now think a little bit PLEASE!!!
