Aaron Curry...
Ok, I'm going to get a lot of angry looks for this one, but here it goes...If they Lions draft Aaron Curry it will be a bad pick.
No, not Mike Williams,Charles Rogers, or Joey Harrington bad. He will come in and perform and be a playmaker, but with the acquisition of Julian Peterson, our LB corp goes from top priority to 3rd or 4th on the list. If we draft defense, I would rather see B.J. Raji since our Dline looks far worse than our linebackers. The pick I would lean more towards would be E. Monroe or J. Smith as that would help at two spots, LT and G, and our offensive line would pretty much be set.
Another reason I'm against Curry, is that the linebackers available at no.20 or no.33 are better than the offensive linemen. I would rather draft E. Monroe and Rey Maualuga/James Lauarainitus than Aaron Curry and Beatty.
Here's what my draft would look like (1st 5 picks)
1a-J. Smith
1b-Rey Maualuga
2 Robert Ayers
3a- Ron Brace
3b- Best corner available
Then pick up Terrence Taylor in the 6th and a WR/TE.

posted a bit early...
and like I said, Aaron Curry is a beast, and before we got Julian Peterson, I was all for drafting him. I just hate the idea of drafting someone at no. 1 and moving them from their original position. For all we know Maualuga could be equal with Curry at the MLB spot at a pro level. To me picking Curry no. 1 is too close to taking Crabtree. Sure, they are enourmous talents and will make an impact, but our need for them isn’t high enough to warrant that no. 1 pick.
Please
tell me how LB is 3rd or 4th on the list i will give you 2nd but 3rd or 4th come on i am going to argue that its still first priority why because Backass should prob be backing up some one but he is still 2nd string who the hell is going to be a MLB? Jordan Dizon? Alex Lewis? i mean lets be real they are both Practice Squad players and Maualuga is not going to be there at 20 and i don’t know why everyone thinks he is and James Lariuntius is a huge step below Curry and Ray Ma so why wouldn’t you go out and get the best and make this the best LB Core in the NFC if not the NFL and how the hell can you compare this to taking Crabtree i mean wow MLB sucks and its a HUGE hole and if you dont fill it they just pound the middle all day
Disagree, but understand.
Rarely do you have the chance to draft a LB like Curry. LT’s are available every year. Peterson doesnt have many more years, 2 at the most (with us) take Curry develope him. James Lauarainitus is not a franchise LB, or a 1st round talent in my opinion and Rey Maualuga won’t be available to us at #20. Take Curry, he is the Truth.

Why is everyone so down on Laurinaitis all of a sudden?
Is it because the NFL network said he had a “bad combine”? Look a lot of what is in the media right now is coaches and scouts and others trying to adjust rankings to benefit their team. NFL Network and half the media that report this stuff are bias towards a team and working towards their own goals.
Laurinaitis would be a STEAL at #20 or #33. When people were basing his draft stock on his play in college, before all this combine and nonsense started, he was ranked MUCH, MUCH higher. He’s a good player and is most definitely a franchise LB and 1st round talent.
I am not..
I have been sayiong Animal jr. at #20 would be a steal. DT Raji with the #1. Defense is almost complete
seriously
i could do a better job at MLB then Dizon and Lewis so what the heck does that tell you? Hmm that it is our biggest need!
I'm all for picking Raji @ #1
I think Eugene Monroe is a safer pick at LT, too. J. Smith will have to be TAUGHT how to come out of a 3-point stance, doesn’t have the lower body strength of Monroe which will make him beatable on the bull-rushes ala Backus, and is not as good of a run-blocker
know what you mean.. but i still love curry
IF we get Cutler, we draft Monroe/Smith. If we don’t i’d prefer Curry or Raji… I’d lean towards Curry because Peterson is at the end of his career and Raji isn’t the best defensive player available.

MLBs in the Third Round
There are a few good ones who will be able to be starters right away in the third round. I must sound like a broken record on this but I think we have more important issues on this team than using one of our first three picks on MLB.
For instance our defensive line. Then our offensive line. I would like to see the Lions be able to trade the #20 pick for two second rounders or a second, and third and fourth, or a second and fourth this year and a second next year [worst option]. This would allow us to pick up a DT or DE and a G/C to go with our LT at #1 and DT at #33.
The other thing to remember is that there are still stop gap free agents available that may be picked up after the draft.
Lets face it, 2009 will be a tough year. Another early draft position in 2010 will allow us to fill in more holes. Hopefully QB, and more defence.
Do we want a player with the last name Hood?
It just screams bad Karma, besides everyone would say he was destined for Detroit. Besides i’m not big on a school when their 2 DT’s come out and the defence wasn’t even dominate. Raji is our best bet this year if we don’t draft Curry. DT class is too weak.

Like I said...
I figured I would get an earful for saying this, but I just think the lions at this point have more of a need than lb at no.1. I’m not saying they don’t need a mlb, thats what Rey is for. Here is what they need more at no. 1
DT
OL
QB
Ok, there are players I would take that meet the DT and OL, but there is not a qb worthy of the no.1 pick. I know comparing Curry and Crabtree was drastic, but I was making a point, that we have holes and can’t take a position that we already have talent at.
Also, here’s a retreat of sorts. If the lions take curry no. 1 and can land Oher at 20, that would be great as well. I was reading Dave Birketts blog and he pointed out that Curry would fit into Schwartz’s scheme, as he is very versataille.
I think I should’ve posted a disclaimer saying that I change my mind constantly on who they Lions should draft. So, I would agree with many of you and say that Curry wouldn’t be a bad pick, I just think its a bit soon to be worrying about replacing Julian Peterson.
