I don't think this report is true, but it is worth mentioning nonetheless.

A source would be nice
Just a rumour by the looks. Although, it would be nice if it happened.

yeah...
How do they just go proclaiming this without giving some sort of source. Not even the somewhat fuzzy comforting feeling of “according to an inside source” but “we learned”

Thats your media at work...
D4L, Thats all the media does anymore; they get fed whatever spin their ‘source’ wants, repeat it faithfully in whatever media they are in, and call it a scoop. It then gets spread everywhere as fact by the other journalists and talking heads. They never seem to question the motives of the guy giving them the story, or correct themselves when it turns out later that they have been fed a load of crap. It is lazy and unethical, but thats what they do.
This is the same in sports reporting, business, politics, entertainment,…… . The lesson to be learned is to think about what is being spread, verify it with other sources, and be sceptical.

Great but......
What about Eugene Monroe? I am surprised that Jason Smith seems to be so clearly identified as the better pick for Detroit at Left Tackle. Monroe has the better history at the positon and has played in a pro style offence at Virginia, as compared to Baylor’s spread.
Monroe seems the safer pick, is there a reason Jason Smith seems to be the #1 Left Tackle?
NOTE: I love that the Lions are going Left Tackle here. Leave the QB until 2010.

jason smith
As far as I know he is an excellent pass blocker and needs to work on his running game. Monroe is a bit more balanced, but if the lions are looking for pass protection then i would suspect Smith.

Yes .....
…..he had the best combine by far of all the O Lineman.

That's great
but a combine does not a great player make. J Smith wasn’t even grouped with the top OTs before the combine. That would be based on his performance in school.
Now he’s the one? The only constant among the top OTs so far has been Monroe. He played great in school to put his name in there with A Smith and Oher. Then he had a slightly not as good combine as J Smith and is still mentioned as one of the top ones. Why is he being overlooked because someone had one great day?
Why would we want a project (his run blocking) when the real thing is already right there?

This.
I like Jason Smith but he wasn’t remotely considered a top OT until Oher and Smith’s stocks both fell and he had a good combine.

Lets face it
We have been alright in pass protection with giving our qb 2 sec to throw the ball so getting a solid pass protector would be nice. As long as its not Stafford with the trickle down affect im fine with it because i dont want to take a qb and then a lt when we need defense with the 20 and 33 picks

I agree with you.
Thats one of my main problems with drafting Stafford at #1. We will then have to reach for a Left Tackle [Beatty I guess] at #20, who is not really setting the world on fire [a younger Backus?]. Or the worse option, trade up from #20 to get Oher.
Then we start drafting defence.
It will be more difficult to get difference makers on defence later. We need solid starters on defence from the draft.

Oher for the win
I would much rather have Oher over most of the other tackles. But his stock has fallen so far it isn’t likely the lions would get him at 20. However I can say without hesitation that I would trade down from 20 possibly within the 13 to 17 range and take him if that position is not the lions first pick.

This contradicts what Mort reported on ESPN

Possibly a "controlled leak"
What I mean by that is, I think most people think that the Rams REALLY want Smith, and if the Lions convince them they are going to take him, might be able to trade out of that top pick. It’s a long shot, but it couldn’t hurt to try.

Wouldn't surprise me
I think there is going to be a lot of false info out there until someone is signed. Some of it will probably be leaks specifically from the Lions to throw people off.
