ESPN Reports

There were just two reports by Chris Mortensen on Sportscenter:

  1. The New York Jets have expressed major interest in Jay Cutler and are trying to work a deal with the Broncos.  However, the Broncos aren't going to bite on a "Clemens and 1st round draft pick " offer, so it is complicated.  There may have to be a three team trade.   The more things unfold, the more it becomes evident that Jay Cutler is not going to Detroit.
  2. The Lions are focused primarily on Matthew Stafford in their draft pick analysis.  Though they are considering the others that we all have been discussing (Smith, Curry, Monroe, Raji), Stafford is what their "conventional wisdom" is leading them to consider more.   In other words, the #1 spot is Stafford's to lose.

Looks like we will have a new QB in the Motor City before too long.

Is it too much to hope

That Denver is hooked on Stafford and will trade us Cutler 1 for 1?

The Audacity of Hope

The deal will never go down that way. Detroit will have to give more than just the #1 pick.

I hope you're right...

…but I just don’t see it.

Just let it happen

I’ve posted 2 or 3 posts about Stafford is most likely coming to detroit and instead of fighting it and being negitive about it, maybe look on the bright side if he works out we have a big time QB to get the ball to a big time WR. I’d rather go OT still might happen but I’m preordering my Stafford jersey just to be ready!!! : ) I do beilieve if we take Stafford we have to hold off on a LT till next year and focus our picks on defence. If they find the right line man in the middle rounds so be it.

by msivits on Mar 23, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

Totally agree

IF we take Stafford first there is no reason to reach for a LT at 20 or 33. Sit him at the end of the bench (and by that I mean he’s behind Culpepper, Stanton, AND Henson) this year and let him learn holding a clipboard. We’ll still get a high pick next year and we can spend that on a LT. That gives us plenty of picks to fix the defense this year.

(It’s amazing how I’m able to talk myself into hope for the Lions every year)

Yes

But I wonder how long they will keep him on the bench, I’m guessing they would keep Culpepper and and let him start but I have a feeling if we bomb early you could see Stafford around week 8, He would have a chance to get his feet wet and a feeling for the game unlike Joey H did. My upset pick is that Loper beats up backus for the LT job and moves him too guard, the real loop is we draft a Guard maybe that kid from Wisconson Uribk and he pushes Backus, buttom like don’t expect Backus to be here much longer. Infact a draft day trade could be in the works to move him and I don’t know why but Oakland sounds like a landing spot for him…

My concern too.

As the losses mount, there will be a lot of pressure to put the high paid saviour into the game. If Stafford is any kind of competitor he will be agitating for it too.
I hate to get off the negativity bandwagon, but it is possible that Stafford playing in 2009 might be a good thing for both him and the team.

Not every franchise QB started out in an ideal environment. In fact, from what I remember, most of them had lousy lines in front of them and poor players at the skill positions. Real elite QBs do what they can with what they have.

Ive gotta admit ive been all over the charts cutler, curry, etc.. ,but the more i read what you guys are saying the more i believe this kid is coming here ,and i do believe he has the arm for the next level, and although in years past we havent been able to develop a Qb,maybe just maybe these new coaches can,and if we do take him i will hope he’d succeed rather than fail, but msivits UR RIGHT ITS GOTTA BE DEFENSE ALL THE WAY AFTER THAT STILL SOME HOLES TO BE FILLED,so i guess ill swallow the old pride and admit i could be wrong(enjoy that cause it dont happen often)about stafford(still hoping for cutler on the side lol)!!!!!

LOL

I’ve learned the bigger man is the one who can unhindge his jaws : ) after some of my perdictions in the past I am now able to swallow an antelope…

When there's smoke...

It seems to me that Stafford will be the pick. Every new rumor that comes out seems likely to be a smokescreen. Hopefully that means that they are trying to drive up the value of the pick for a possible trade, but the rumors always involve different players. If there were legit interest in Curry/Raji/Smith, it would seem more centered on that player, as opposed to “throwing it against the wall to see what sticks”.

Its about the moolah

To my understanding the lions are not trying to pay the 1st pick quarterback money to Stafford. They will go with the cheep player because the fords are cheep (Strange logic, I know).

However, I am impressed by Stafford’s Wonderlic(sp?) exam score. This actually makes me so much more content with the possible pick.

Agreed

on the Wonderlic thing, though it doesn’t necessarily translate to success on the football field. He made some awful decisions throwing the ball in college sometimes.

A thought

Maybe it is an attempt to drive up the value. Think about it, what position has the most value at #1? OT? not this year. There are at least 2 at the top, sooo any team could trade up into the top 5 and probably grab one of them, so why trade more just to get #1. LB? the “conventional wisdom” says that LBs should not be taken first overall (I think this is stupid) therefore driving down the value for the first pick for anyone looking to take Curry. DT? Same argument. No RBs popping off the page. No one’s looking to take Crabtree at 1 (although he’s probably the 2nd best player in the draft overall). That leaves QB. And the best on this year is Stafford. Therefore it’s time to try and drive up the value, maybe trading down (I really doubt this, but the more value you can create for the pick, the better the chances). There are several teams looking for a QB and there are only 2 legit (other is sanchez) QBs this year.
