L.J. SMITH TO VISIT LIONS- from PFT

"Philadelphia Eagles free agent tight end L.J. Smith is on his way to Detroit where he’ll meet with Lions team officials tonight and Tuesday, according to Albert Breer of SportingNews.com.

Smith caught just 37 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns last season one year removed from being the Eagles’ franchise player.

In 2006, Smith caught 50 passes and five touchdowns.

As Breer points out, the Lions are hurting at tight end. Between Michael Gaines and Casey Fitzsimmons, they combined for just 35 receptions last season."

Any thoughts on Smith?

And what about Owen Daniels?  He had a huge year last year for the Texans and is a free agent, but havent heard much news on his status?

I just saw the comment about this on the other thread.

I would be excited to pick up Smith and honestly I think it would be our best signing so far of Free Agency. Owen Daniels would be better but I doubt he would come to Detroit.

The Texans

put a first-and-third round restricted free agent tag on Owen Daniels per Yahoo sports I heard it elsewhere too (NFL.com I think). Not even close to being worth giving that up but L.J. Smith would be a great pickup. He had as many receptions last year as both of our tight ends as the article points out. Good receiving tight end and we could use Gaines as a blocker which lets be honest thats what he is and what he should be. Fitzsimmons is a really good special teams player so if we got L.J. we would have three tight ends that fill specific roles for us. GET HIM PLEASE. GO LIONS!!!!

L.J.Smith

If the lions signed smith it would be a huge upgrade and give Culpepper a weapon he needs, I know there trying to sign depth but this is a signing who could start and give us a weapon in the red zone " god knows CJ needs some help"

Awesome...

This would be a huge move. We’d finally have a Tight End that would be a threat. The only problem is he seems to be injury prone if I’m not mistaken.

Owen Daniels....

…..has rescripstions. If you sign him you have to give up a number 1 or 2 I believe. Dont think lions want to give up draft picks for a TE.

L.J. OR Owen

I would take either one. Period.

GO LIONS!
