Tuesday Notes: Stafford to Work Out with Lions Today
- Matthew Stafford is going to privately work out with the Lions today, and USC's pro day is tomorrow. Anyone else think negotiations will start to get serious later this week once the Lions have a better idea of who the No. 1 pick should be?
- Josh Freeman is going to visit the Lions sometime in the near future.
- The Saints re-signed Joey Harrington.
- Shaun Cody officially signed with the Texans.

I'm so thankful
that the Saints resigned Joey Harrington before William Clay Ford got sentimental and asked Mayhew to bring him back.
ESPN and Yahoo...
…are all hinting that Detroit will pass on Stafford when it comes down to it.
I hope they’re right.

Just a Question...
but why are there people all over SB Nation and some here at POD that are so high on Josh Freeman?

Doesn't make any sense right?
They think he’s a Flacco type I guess. To me Flacco stepped into the right situation, kinda like Roethlisburger. the Ravens had a very good team around him. The offense was underrated in that Derrick Mason is a perrenial Pro-Bowl snub and guys liek Clayton and Todd heap are good too.
Freeman would be a HORRIBLE choice for the Lions. He would not be stepping into a favorable situation with the Lions at all.
If your gonna grab a QB, it has to be Sanchez first or unless they are sold on Stafford then he’s the guys. If not, you might as well wait untill the later rounds to grab a guy like Bomar.

I'm not sure about Freeman
The only place I would be happy with the Lions drafting Freeman is if he happened to fall to #33. He is definitely a project QB. That said, with such a weak QB class this year, Freeman has climbed draft boards around the league. I think the highest pick that has been speculated by sportswriters was that the Jets might take him at #17. He has the tools to be a productive quarterback in the NFL. I just worry that he’ll take more time to develop than just a year behind Culpepper. If he is there at # 33, I would hope that the Lions take a look at him, but only if they’ve already addressed the O-line at pick #1 or #20, and only if Hood and Brace weren’t available.
If we got Freeman at 33
He can room with Stanton. Maybe they can start dresssing alike and pull pranks on the coaches because no one can tell them apart. “No.I’m the OTHER high 2nd round project QB who has a cannon arm and limited ability reading defenses. Ha Ha! Got you again, Jim! What’s that? Go sit on the bench next to my twin. OK.”
He'd be a perfect fit with the Jets
You guys should think of that with a grain of salt.
THe Lions, Jets and Bengals have got to be the 3 worst run franchises in the league (for now the Cardinals get a break cuz of the SB run I guess so they have a free pass-if 2009 is a normal Cardinals season this list goes back to 4.)
Freeman is a horrible option. Like I said, he’s only an option if your team has say a defense already? The Lions obviously don’t He’d actually be a bad pick at anywhere in teh draft for you, cuz he’ll never be any better than Stanton.
Either you go for Sanchez or Stafford #1, or you take just as risky a chance of using Culpepper(as a Pennington type), or maybe you can try to develop the aforementioned Stanton. You might want to at least give the guy a shot no?
But do not draft another QB (Stafford or Sanchez, unless Bomar’s there in the 4th I guess) cuz they wouldn’t be any better than who’s on the roster

You forgot the Raiders
But I agree with your point completely. Wait until we have a team built that can support a developing QB, then take a shot at drafting one. I say we give the team this year to gel and find their identity, then draft Bradford next year (assuming that’s possible).
Well the Raiders
I guess could be compared to the Cardinals of a few years back. Using a vet team to get close to teh Bowl. But the raiders have a rich history that only the past 20 years really has tainted it. The Lions Jets Bengals and aside from this year the Cardinals have perennially been losers. The Raiders are next, but at least they have something……
As for Bradford, do you really want to wait for him? He’s got that completion percentage thing, but he also plays in a wide open Big 12 offense that plays against joke college defenses like baylor and Texas Tech. I would not be hoping your QB savior is in the form of Bradford.

Bradford
I never said he would be a savior…personally, I think it’s idiotic to look for a “savior” at QB. If you put that kind of pressure on a just-drafted QB, he’ll fail almost every time. I do, however, think Bradford is the most promising QB prospect for next year at this point. I don’t think that “that completion percentage thing” is anything to scoff at. So what if he plays in the Big 12? Sure, the TDs and passing yards will be heavily inflated in that kind of offense, but he’s accurate as hell and shows good judgment. Those are good qualities to look for in a QB you want to groom into a franchise player.
Regardless, the point of my first post was not about Bradford, it was to support your original point about building a team first.
Potential
He’s tall at 6’6, good weight at 255lbs, moblile for his size, cannon of an arm. More less the thought that he could be groomed into a pro bowl type QB.
Buster..
Would definitely be an upgrade if he would agree to come back, but that would REALLY put Curry out of the mix (if he isn’t completely out already).

Mock drafts...
…I’m sick of them. I am ready for the real thing to happen already.

News on Stafford's Workout
This is bad for all of us Stafford haters:

Just a thought...
But I kind of expected them to give him rave reviews. It is entirely possible that they’re doing so to tempt other QB-hungry teams to trade for the top pick, which I would not be opposed to.
buster davis, josh freeman
i also agree that buster davis shouldn’t have been cut last year, and would love to see him brought back as a backup middle backer. critics say he was too short and slow at 5’9" and 245lbs. my response to them would be to watch the tape on this kid!! he was a downhill middle-backer, and was constantly knocking the snot out ball carriers at fsu!!! instead we kept lenon and dizon. wonder why we lost every game last season…..
i don’t care what anyone says, i enjoyed watching josh freeman at k-state, and would be happy if the lions could land this kid. do i need to elaborate on the talent he had around him?? two words “crap shoot.” i felt that he got the most out of what he had, and i think that will translate well into the nfl. without freeman on the field, i seriously doubt k-state would have won a game last year.
lost in the stafford, sanchez and freeman hype, why isn’t anyone talking about graham harrell or pat white??? harrell is a very accurate passer, and white, he had a really good combine, and i do distinctly remember the lions drafting mcmahon because he had a good senior bowl. if you’re talking sleepers in the draft, i would really like to see the lions draft harrell!!
