Time to accept the facts

At this point, it almost seems inevitable that the Lions will choose Matt Stafford. I really don't like this pick, but I can only get mad so many times. It is time to start looking for the positives. I would like us to pick Aaron Curry, but I don't see that happening after the Peterson trade. That brings us to OT. Who is the real #1? During the season, it was Mike Oher and Andre Smith, but now the distinction falls to Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe. Shouldn't we be looking at what they did in the season? Isn't that what is really important? I am just saying if we can get either Smith or Oher at #20, I will be elated. Neither may be the smartest guy, or be a workout warrior (or in Smith's case, even show up to workouts) but they can play.

I would crap a gold brick

If Andre Smith fell to pick 20 and we got him. Heck, I’d even take Oher.

I forgot to say

I think drafting a QB this year is idiocy in practice. I don’t care what anbody says…..Aaron Curry is 6’2" 254 lbs. He fits the mold of MLB in the NFL. We got Peterson…..SO WHAT!?!?!? We have Ernie Sims too……does that mean we shouldn’t draft the best player available? Curry is the best linebacker to enter the draft in the last 10 years, hands down. He is so versatile that he can play any of the linebacking positions. He should be the number one pick. Defense wins championships.

Hold on there

In the last 10 years…isn’t that a little presumptious. I would be surprised if he turns out as good as Patrick Willis or DeMeco Ryans

i dont know...

I think that he has a really good shot to be better. I Would love for the lions to get Curry, but I think that they will draft Stafford after today.

lol

YOU really are going along with those workouts huh?

Derrick Johnson was a 10 year prospect too how’d he end up? (he’s still on the cheifs BTW). Curry is no where close to running Patrick Wills’ 4.4 , so I wouldn’t even say he’s on par with Willis.

Also, Lavaar Arrington was going to revolutionize the game, a faster LT. LOL, easy with the comparisons and the hopes. He still is a rook and its not like Guys like Curry have come out and busted before or even just came out and were average. AJ Hawk comes to mind. Guy was every bit the player Curry is in college, versatile workout warrior and all that. How’d he turn out?? Good, very good even. Is he even the best LB on his team? Absolutely not.

Andre Smith is being projected as a Right Tackle

We have one of those [Cherilus]. And really, do you want a player who can’t stay in shape and does not seem to have his head into this process? Andre Smith has BUST written across his forehead. I would not take him with a third round pick.

Oher would be great but it seems like Beatty is going to be the best LT available at #20. The Lions could wait until 2010 to get a Left Tackle.

Curry woud be good but lets face it, this team needs an elite QB. Stafford looks to be a surer bet than anyone available in 2010. I still like the idea of taking Monroe or Jason Smith, but that does not solve our long term QB problem.

The Lions defence cannot be fixed with one player. We need a few years [I’ll say three] of draft picks, free agents, and some good coaching to get where we have a top eight rated defence.
We need to be patient and see how this plays out.

by NorthLeft12 on Mar 31, 2009 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

Totally Agree

Andre Smith doesn’t really fit our team. He’s character issues worry me and I just don’t see Mayhew or Schwartz taking a chance like that.

Oher is a minor possibility at #20 but only if things go our way so I we can’t expect him to fall, and even then, I just don’t like spending a pick on LT when we need some D.

I would be stoked if the Lions had a top 8 Defence by 2013, I would consider Schwartz and Mayhew or whoever got it done a genius. But that seems like long way away and slightly unlikely.

by Hyperion Ecta on Mar 31, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

But Andre Smith......

was actually the best tackle when they actually played the games. Guys like Orlando Pace and even dating back to Walter Jones didn’t have their heads on straight and were pretty overweight, how those 2 turn out? (answer is HOF BTW).

Andre Smith lost about 30lbs since the Senior bowl and pro day. Does that tell you anything? Andre Smith was the best tackle hands down during the season. The guy is an absolute beast on the field, who the hell cares if he has a screw or 2 loose off the field? You want your LT to be nuts, especially if you plan on using the run as your primary focus. The guy has every bit the potential as any LT in the draft, and probably more so.

If you guys got Smith to play LT, I’d first off be surprised he lasted that long, 2nd you should be extremely happy if he fell and you selected him.

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 31, 2009 7:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't agree

There’s no doubt that Andre has potential and is a good player, but I don’t believe he is the best tackle in this draft. There is no consensus No.1 tackle. I’ve seen plenty of draft rankings having him 3rd or 4th and that was before the combine. Sure, I’d might agree with you if he were a consensus top tackle but he just isn’t. Monroe or Smith or just as good and don’t carry the red flags that Andre does. Also, I would be surprised he fell that far anyway, some team above us will take the chance.

by Hyperion Ecta on Mar 31, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I was saying during the season

he was the best, and that’s a fact. He was the #1 pick during the season. Smith was a mid-first rounder and Monroe was a top 10 pick, not #1 overall.

Smith was the #1 overall during the season, and cuz of workouts he isn’t all of a sudden. Ok, so I wouldn’t take him #1 cuz of the character red flags. But going by the only thing that really matters, the field, he was the best. Not projections, not potential, on the field in college, he was the best.

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 1, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Shows what good PR can do for you.

FB,

Read the story about Jason Smith. Among people that are knowledgeable of offensive line play, he knew that Eugene Monroe was the class of the current Left Tackle class. He studied film of Monroe’s footwork to become a better blocker.
Monroe kept Albert Branden [the Chiefs new LT] at Guard for his career in college. The guy ahead of him was D’Brickshaw Ferguson, a high first round pick of the Jets. Just because Monroe plays for a college team that is not glorified and in a BCS bowl does not make him less of a talent than Andre Smith.

Andre Smith is the Tony Mandarich of this decade.

Agreed on being patient

But I feel Smith will be a LT in the NFL, he has too much talent to drop to #20, I think you know how I feel about Beatty, but I do now agree with your pevious thoughts about trading out of the #20 spot, only if Oher is not avaible.

by msivits on Mar 31, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

Why do we need an elite quarterback right now? Who will protect him? Plus, I think Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford are both better than Stafford

Check out nickandroll.blogspot.com

by n1ck34 on Mar 31, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

So you want to wait?????

Who said Bradford or McCoy is better than Safford who’s said the lions will be in the spot in next years draft to take one of them??? Listen I would like to take a LT this year but the thought that either of those 2 QB’s will fall to us is thinking to far ahead. What if they get picked apart at there proday and deemed not worth the pick. You have to play the hands your delt, and drafting a LT now hoping one of them will be there and worth the pick isn’t smart football. I know why we will probably take Stafford, but I won’t say don’t take him because one of those 2 QBs will be better next year. If Culpepper plays good or Stanton works out great but I won’t say take a LT now because Bradford or McCoy are franchise QB’s in the waiting and be there waiting for us…

by msivits on Mar 31, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

McCoy and Bradford

are system QB’s, kinda like Joey Harrington except McCoy and Bradford are more “accomplished” in college. THey play against swish cheese defenses too.

Good luck if you wait for one of these 2. It will set the franchise back another 5 years.

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 1, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

agree 100%

I think that this is what is gonna happen.

by hate2lovelions on Mar 31, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I could deal with the Stafford pick

only if Ray Maliuga(?) or Jim Larinatis is there at 20.
It looks inevitable so lets just hope it pans out.

Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

by BoscoHB on Mar 31, 2009 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

Smith won't be there

I think Oher has a better chance being there at #20 than Smith, If we do take Stafford we hang on to #20 if Oher falls there take him if not North warmed me to the idea of trading out of it, if we can’t trade out of it we should take the best defensive player on the board…

by msivits on Mar 31, 2009 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

It really is time to accept the fact

that these are the Detroit Lions. The least storied franchise in pro sports. That’s what I think about when I see Stafford articles.
Up there somewhere someone said the Lions need an elite QB to get into contention, but we’re not in contention at all. Worst team ever is actually where we’re sitting. So talking about getting an elite QB to lead us into the promised land is a few years off.
Also, how many “elite” qb’s are in the league right now? 4? 5? Brady, Peyton then who? Every team needs an elite qb for the most part. But didn’t Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer win superbowls behind the strength of an amazing defense and a strong running game?
But no…the Lions simply must have a secksi new thrower to get the taste of 0-16 outta the mouth.
That’s a Millen way of thinking and since the Detroit fans have had that shite force fed to us for the last 8 years I’m not suprised that’s how some people now think.
But yeah, Curry’s being thrown into comparison with people like Ray Lewis, Derrick Brooks, and Jr. Seau. Stafford draws comparisons to? WHO? I haven’t heard anyone come out saying he throws like Elway or sees the field like Montana. He’s got a big arm and he could throw passes in a practice situation. Whoop dee do.
I’m just not looking forward to KC having the DROY and every other team in the league at least getting some stats outta their 1st rounder.

Thank you

I couldn’t have stated it better myself. People are getting wayyy too wrapped up in the QB situation. Now is not the time for that. We’re building from, as you said, the worst season in NFL history. We need to build a base of solid players, starting in the trenches and building outward, in order to get back to relevancy. All we need in the meantime is a QB who will protect the ball and manage the game. Looking for a flashy QB to swoop in and save us is (again, as you put it) a Millen way of thinking.
If the Lions can’t trade out of #1 (which I would love to see), I really hope they draft J. Smith or Monroe. If not one of them, Curry. But it would kill me to see them take a $35 million gamble on someone who probably wouldn’t even start for another season or two.

by AZ Yooper on Apr 1, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point

But this dates back to when we let Orlovsky walk and gave Culpepper the job, if you wanted a game manger Orlovsky has that written all over him given another chance with a full off season of training he could of been that, a game manger, won’t win you a game but won’t lose it either. Culpepper did not even show that when he played so to say why we need a elite QB and hoping Culpepper will be a game manger when he hasn’t shown it the past 5 years…

by msivits on Mar 31, 2009 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Listen

We could draft a LT this year and build our O-line but who’s the game manger? Culpepper or Stanton. And that goes back to the same point of hoping Bradford or McCoy will be there and worth drafting. If we had a game manager QB that could hold the fort for 2 or 3 years while we build both the lines great but we don’t so there taking the QB right now who they think could do the job for years to come… It’s a tough pill to put down but were stuck with it..

Guys

Cutler is going to be traded…..check the newest posts.

by KDawg on Mar 31, 2009 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

Culpepper

Take away the Cul, add a Julius and I’m all for the guy. I don’t think he’s going to lead the Lions to the bowl either. I have no idea what the guy’s got left in the tank. But with all the hoopla surrounding his wweight loss, and reunation with his old OC I’m willing to let there be some hope.
I watch college football more than a little. I’m not saying I’m some kinda expert here but when I watched Matt Ryan play for BC there was that hmmmm…quality He looked like a QB and when he marched his team down the field he was in control the whole time. I watched Georgia on 3 occasions last year and Matt just didn’t have that. He looked lost And Georgia came up short on the comeback I saw.
A game manager would be great to have. I think Losman would be good in the D. But with Stafford @ #1 I think we’re taking a step back. And at 0-16 that’s should be impossible.

by MattyZ on Mar 31, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

I respect your thoughts

But I watch alotta college football too, maybe not as much as you but I think Stafford has the stuff to be a franchise QB if taken care of…

by msivits on Mar 31, 2009 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

Agree to disagree on that

and that what’s making the next month so frackin hard to deal with. But it’s more fun than making the Lions go 0-16 on Madden so I can turn em around myself.
fyi it took three years to make the playoffs and we picked up Terrel Suggs this offseason instead of JP.

by MattyZ on Mar 31, 2009 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

lol

It is fun, but not indicative of what happens in real life. I can take the current Lions team to the Superbowl on Madden 09 without any additions or subtractions.

by KDawg on Mar 31, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Hell Naw

I hate Madden. It’s stolen at least 2 years of my life thanks to 3 friends and franchise mode. But hell no you can’t compare.
But it has been fun starting the punter at QB for one season to make sure they go 0-16 and then try to turn the franchise around with some new players.
But no…I don’t think anyone would give up Andre Johnson for the 17th pick in the draft.
But I would go with Terrel Suggs over Julian Peterson…

by MattyZ on Mar 31, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The problem with Smith is a character issue he will be a cancer to some team.

by rut1 on Apr 16, 2009 8:57 AM EDT reply actions

Culpepper for 1 year

Keep Culpepper for one 1 year and draft a QB NOT STAFFORD . Theirs some decent QB’s in this draft dont put your eggs in one basket
