Drew Stanton- Bust?

Does anyone out there have any deeper info on the status of Drew Stanton?

I have heard that he is not very intelligent and does not play well in practice.

Personally, I would like to see him play.  He has more upside at this point than Culpepper.  Unless Culpepper comes into camp in tremendous shape, I think that he will be a mess.  Culpepper does not see the field well and makes many bad decisions because of it.

I would let them fight it out in camp and possibly start Stanton.  What do you really have to lose?  The Lions are going to be bad again this year, regardless of the starting QB (unless we catch lightning in a bottle).  If you play him, you know what you have and you suck.  If you don't play him, you have no idea what you have and you suck.

What do you think?

Maestro....drum roll please.....

The status of Drew Stanton is that he is 100% healthy and ready to play. Drew is not stupid. He has a degree in Kinesiology and was an academic all-american at MSU. I have never heard anything bad about him in practice, or really anything at all about him in practice other than when Martz was messing with his mechanics. I would also like to see Drew play, but not until there is some real protection up front and not until he knows the system inside out. Daunte Culpepper was in decent shape last year when he came out of retirement, but his lack of play leading up to being thrusted into our lineup didn;t help him at all, as he was very rusty on his throws. However, he did look great on his feet, and he has regained a majority of his mobility, which is great considering the injury that he sustained. Given a chance to go through the offseason workout program, to develop timing with his receivers, and to shake off the rust, Daunte could very well return to pro-bowl form. It is not out of the realm of possibility. The Lions can not afford to just let Stanton start no matter what. If he is the better man in camp, and if they get somebody to keep the opposing defense off of him for a few seconds, then they could give him a shot. Until then, he stays in Detroit as a backup.

BTW

I think that the Lions could easily be 8-8 this year if they draft well.

I say that every year.

Wouldn't he have to play first....

to be considered a bust?

How many games did Aaron rodgers play before coming the starter? How many years?

STFU with this stupid bust talk until the guy falls on his face when given the chance to be astarter will ya?

by CLF on Mar 6, 2009 12:39 PM EST reply actions

lessee….Aaron Rodgers sat behind some guy named Favre, you might have heard of him….

Drew Stanton sits behind Jon Kitna, Danny “Waltzes over the back of the end zone for a safety” Orlovsky, and Daunte “Oh wow, you’re right, he is still alive” Culpepper.

And has a coach commenting on how embarrassing it would be if he actually got out on the field.

Yep, Stanton’s a bust.

as I reply to a post below, what does it say about Stanton that he can’t even get on the field for an 0-16 team?

by ahtrap on Mar 6, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

The same 0-16 team

that thought Lenon should be on the field all the time….. PFFFT.

by CLF on Mar 6, 2009 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

hahah Lenon

Pro bowl starter this year.

Stanton

We can’t say start him and see what he has, that would be the same as giving him the job that he hasn’t earned. If Drew stay’s healthy in training camp, stay’s healthy in pre-season, and gets good minutes in preseason and looks good, then if culpepper starts off slow you might see Stanton sooner than later. Listen some guys look great in practice and can’t bring that onto the field, some guys look horrible in practice but when they walk on the field for some reason it justs clicks for them. Let’s start by Stanton staying healthy, getting more practice, and playing in all four preseason games, by then I think we could judge Stanton a little better…

by msivits on Mar 6, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Why not?

I don’t see why an 0-16 team wouldn’t just have an open competition for the QB spot. I wouldn’t hand Stanton the job but I’d give him a chance to earn it. He might show us something.

Busty Bust Bust

The guy is a ham sandwich. I say we keep him as a backup until he becomes a free agent and then let him go. If he passes for over 2k in his career I will be floored.

by ATL Lion on Mar 6, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions

As posted elsewhere

He had 26 plays to show something last season: 9 completions for 119 yards, 1 TD (after Culpepper got them to the 5, he came in and got the TD), 6 sacks.

This is for a 2nd round pick who had a year to study the playbook and get used to the speed of the NFL.

Looks a lot like a bust to me.

by ATL Lion on Mar 6, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

I would rather sign Joe the Plumber

to back up our pathetic quarterback situation than Stanton or Henson. There are options out there that are better. Leftwich or Losman would be better, but only as back-ups. Lets face it, Culpepper is no better than most back-ups. But Culpepper and the previously mentioned Leftwich and Losman have starting experience that I would rather have to fall back on than two guys who can barely earn a spot on a team that hasn’t managed to win a game in the past 15 months.

by James L on Mar 6, 2009 2:49 PM EST reply actions

He hasn't been given a chance whatsoever...

Guys, Stanton has in no way been given a chance to prove himself. He only got playing time during garbage time of a couple of games in a season where his team went 0-16. He was sacked a QUARTER of the time due to a horrible O-Line and Jeff “The Human Turnstyle” Backus. When he wasn’t being sacked he was being criticized by stupid Colletto or someone else on the staff. Saying he has been given a chance is like saying an actor with two-lines in the pilot episode of a crummy show “really had his chance to shine.” Come on guys, let him play, and if he sucks, I will be the first to admit it.

by damnitdamnitdamnit on Mar 6, 2009 3:27 PM EST reply actions

I think that’s even more indicative of how big a bust Stanton is….he can’t even get on the field for a 0-16 team….

by ahtrap on Mar 6, 2009 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

Is your last name happen to be...

Colletto?

26 plays…and he’s a bust…. You people kill me.

by CLF on Mar 6, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

You're right

Lets give him the whole season. Let’s say he gets 500 plays next season. That project to something like 115 sacks. Sounds like right way to go.

Hey, the last coaches were not Mensa material, but they played just about anyone who could throw the ball last year. Drew had his chance and he stunk up the place—just like every other QB on the roster.

by ATL Lion on Mar 6, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

The fact that ...

he couldn’t get on the field for this team doesn’t hold much weight. Millen, Marinelli, and everybody else there proved to be pretty poor judges of talent based on who they chose to bring in and play for them. I don’t think Stanton is ever going to be a Superbowl quarterback, but I think he could definitely be better than what we’ve had.

by Lostincali on Mar 6, 2009 4:08 PM EST reply actions

Its not rocket science.....

Drew had his chance. If he were that great, he would be starting. He didnt impress anyone in practice or during the regular season. If you cant beat Dan-O or Kitna for the starting job then maybe, JUST MAYBE, he isnt that great to begin with.
It will be a miracle if he doesnt get hurt again this year.
He is bust just like every other player recently out of MSU.

by ABNMIfan on Mar 6, 2009 5:39 PM EST reply actions

If Stanton was taken where he was supposed to be (5th-7th rd), he wouldn’t be a bust. Considering Millen the Moron drafted him so high to garner local support for him is why he will be a bust

by JazzyBBP on Mar 6, 2009 6:04 PM EST reply actions

Just like Dizon...

He was an incredible reach in the 2nd rd. Draft special teamers late or sign them as undrafted free agents, don’t make them first-day picks.

by JazzyBBP on Mar 6, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

I'm hearing alot

of complaining about Stanton and no ideas what the lions should do about our QB problems. If you have better ideas please state them rather than just say he’s a bust, If we drafted a QB #1 and he had a bad season would the first thing you say is busty mic bust bust, very clever! if we signed a QB and he bad a season let me guess bust, bust bust. Even though you were the ones screaming for someone else how long would you stand behing that statement if he got off to a bad start. No one knows who will be on the roster for QB for the regular season Mayhew is just playing the cards he was delt and from the comments here I see there’s alotta people out there who have no poker face to keep fans and other teams guessing what our moves will be before the draft.

by msivits on Mar 6, 2009 8:17 PM EST reply actions

I say

everybody who think that he is a bust when he hasn’t had the chance can STFU. Lets put you out on the field and see how much the coaches and fans critisize your a$$!!!

by Quez81 on Mar 6, 2009 8:23 PM EST reply actions

Seriously

The guy who said let’s put you on the field and see who criticizes…that’s ridiculous. I haven’t played QB since HS and I never woulda been paid a million bucks for it at my best.
On topic, Stanton is a bust because of his draft status. A second rounder is somene who can be expected to step in right away for most teams. Stanton was a mid level QB in college and never should have been picked in the first day. That’s just the “genious” of Millen shining through.
When you’re 0-16 I think the coaches would have tried him out at some point if he could do anything right in practice. They didn’t
I’m saying the same thing when it comes to “experts” picking Sanchez this year, he couldnt start over Jon David Booty at USC and JDB couldn’t even glimpse the second string in MInn. who’s desperate for a QB.
So yeah , Stanton ain’t the answer. He’s not even the crib sheet for this year

by MattyZ on Mar 6, 2009 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Well!!

My point eactly!! STFU and let the coaching staff do their job. When they label him a bust then I will accept it. I’m not an expert and neither are you.

by Quez81 on Mar 6, 2009 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

1/2 season

That is how long Stanton has been playing in the NFL… and you armchair QBs are calling him a bust already?

Harrington was a bust…. Williams was a bust… Rogers was a bust… Funny how these guys were given 3 or more years to prove themselves, but when it comes to a 2nd round pick, you say bust after 1/2 season of play…

Come’on.

by CLF on Mar 6, 2009 10:42 PM EST up reply actions

I think we still need another guy but he did show he can play, but I would take it to the bank without bringing in another QB just in case I mean heaven forbid daunte goes down which could happen and stanton either cant get the job done what then?we need some else who has at least won some games and knows what it takes to win, also we need a OT who can block and the free agent list isnt empty yet.then maybe we wont have the guy running for his life instead of making plays,

by WAYNIEMAN on Mar 7, 2009 2:11 PM EST reply actions

So what would you define as a bust?

Sparty fan are ya? Millen doomed the guy by picking him in the 2nd round. Being a 2nd rounder and not being able to beat out Dan-O equals a bust imo.
He’s been hurt and he can’t break into the rotation. On the Lions. THe 0-16 Lions…the coaches did do their job and haven’t let him play. Detroit is STILL looking for a QB because they know he doesn’t have what it takes.

by MattyZ on Mar 7, 2009 10:55 PM EST reply actions

...again...

4 seasons to 1/2 of a season. You decide.

by CLF on Mar 8, 2009 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Dan-O

couldn’t break the rotation either until Colletto and Marinelli made their bonehead decisions. Everybody knows Kitna was nowhere near hurt. Kitna and Roy Williams said the offensive system was broke. Two veterans that know how a passing game should be. I knew something was wrong then. If Dan O was so good they wouldn’t have signed Culpepper out of retirement.

by Quez81 on Mar 8, 2009 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Great point

If Dan-O was so good they wouldn’t have signed Culpepper out of retirement. Wasn’t Stanton on the roster at that point too? Riding the bench?

by MattyZ on Mar 8, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Stanton

the problem last year was that he had an oline coach evaluating him…no oline coach ever wants to “develop” a qb…they want a vet to make their oline look good. stanton was the only qb last year to hit calvin in stride adn he has more tools than any other we have on the roster….give him a shot…what is there to lose really???

by londonlion on Mar 8, 2009 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

well the rest of our dignity frankly,im all for letting play but bring in a guy like jp losman who won some games and has good legs i mean whats your backup plan culpepper??the only time he was any good was with carter on one side and moss on the other and pretty descent OL.Weonly have potentially one of those in calvin and he not quite there yet ,but will be with a little help the dude could be the best of the recievers in the league!!!!!!! I mean batman had robin.lone ranger had tonto whos helping calvin?
