Mayhew is amazing.
I was just sitting around reading the daily news as I often do. Reading about Stafford, Cutler, and all of the other nonsense going on.
Well let me first say, for those of you who haven't read anything I've said on here before, I have always been very much opposed to Stafford at any pick, and much in favor of anyone else.
So anyways, I was sitting here, reading about cutler and how a lot of people were speculating that Detroit was the #1 in line for Cutler, and that it would involve the #1 pick more than likely. While I don't necessarily agree with that statement, that is not the point of me writing this.
The point is, I was reading about the situation and I found myself getting very upset. I found myself actually thinking that it wasn't worth trading the #1 for Cutler when we could get Stafford #1 instead. He's got the same arm, hes not a know whiner, and he will have a few extra years for us. Then it hit me, with all the BS Mayhew has been spewing about Staffords amazing workout, I was pleading a case FOR Stafford #1 and getting upset that we might not take him.
And I don't even like the guy.
Mayhew is amazing!

I'm a little the same.
I have my reservations about Stafford but I find myself preferring him to Cutler. Stafford does have the unknown quantity but he seems to have the tools, is intelligent and wants to play here. But in reply to your original subject, I agree that Mayhew has done a real comendable job so far.

idk
to me, comparing a college junior QB who hasn’t played down 1 in the NFL, to a guy who was in the top5 4 yards thrown, & 1 who’d cost alot less than a rookie QB, who hasn’t played a single snap n the NFL, which coicidentally is much different than NCAA, idk if U know that. I think it makes more since 2 take a guy who’s proven for @ least a few mil less, than 1st round prospect. R U gonna get a Ryan or Flacco, or r U gonna get a Harrington or a Ware, that’s somethin that should make since 2 any Lion’s fan. Especially, since they haven’t overhauled the OL, they have gotten some bigger bodies, which hopefully will help, but haven’t gotten an All Pro caliber OT or OG. Which, in my opinion is their biggest need & will improve the QB, they have no blocking. I said b4 & I’ll say it again w/o a better pass blocking U can throw Cutler or this kid behind that line & their gonna end up w/ 30-40 sacks, mayB more, possibly an injury, possibly a career not unlike their predocessors. Still, I would probly have 2 think they’d trade it JC, mainly cuz they’d rather not hafta fork out all that cheddar for #1 pick & we all know how much Ford likes 2 do that, a cheaper less risk involved, to me it’s a no brainer.
I'd take Cutler over Stafford in a heartbeat
Cutler is a known commodity, Stafford is not. Take the best option, which is Cutler.

I agree....
Also, I thing the #20 is an excellent deal for Denver and they should take it or leave it.

If we bad Cutler for the #20
and still get to pick an OT with #1 (which if we get cutler I think becomes a huge need), I will probably pee myself a little.
Our D will still suck but we could end up top 5 on offense.
and if we use the rest of the draft from round 2 on, which is feasible if we shore up the O with cutler and OT, then I think our D can be a huge improvement from last year.
As much as we all wanted to draft D the whole way, the cutler situation is just too strong of an option to ignore.
What I was trying to get at was...
Mayhew is a genius because he actually almost tricked me, a stafford hater, into wanting us to draft him, with all of the quotes and nonsense in the media that he’s been filtering out to try and build up trade bait.
He’s playing it really well.. if someone was interested before, they have to be more interested now, and if not, he’s building up detroit to accept this kid if we have to take him..
and LTownDown, we all know NCAA isn’t the same as the NFL, i’m not saying I believe Stafford is better than Cutler, I actually have constantly said the opposite and that I think stafford will be a bust, but with all the quotes from the coaches and mayhew and the media about his workouts etc, etc.. they are actually making me consider not hating the pick..
My main problem with getting Cutler is...
I don’t want to send a bunch of picks over to Denver for him. Our defence needs a major overhaul and having to send very valuable picks over to the Broncos for a guy who may not even want to play here makes me fairly worried.

Cutler Over Stafford
It’s a no-brainer. Stafford isn’t proven. On general principle, I think you should never give that much money to an unproven QB.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
I pretty much agree.
I like Cutler and having him over here would be a good thing for the franchise but I can’t help but feel like the only way we will get him here is for multiple picks and that is just too much IMO. If we can get him here for one pick I’ll be stoked but I doubt it.

Thats exactly what I said to myself
after having the thoughts. I immediately slapped myself in the face and turned off my monitor and quit reading. It was sad.
Denver wants 2 first round picks
I laughed when Denver posted this saying it will take 2 first rounders, HA who would do that when everybody knows they have to move Cutler it’s not a choice. Then on Q mr. synder showed up with a big smile on his face. Denver you might of gotton luckly again excuse me I have start working on eating my crow pie : (
I also laughed, heres the thing I would love to have him here ,but hes not worth more than just the #1 pick and i think the guy who said hes worth 2 first rounders was actually just a broncos fan blogging here. With this being ANOTHER rebuilding year and we actually have a coach and GM with some foresight i’d be shocked if they give to much with all the pressing needs this team has and I actually think they see this, and if the cost is too much we may see stafford here although myself would rather see cutler, and i do see us making a serious bid for him just hope it works and it dont cost too much
Cutler is not worth 2 first round picks in a straight up deal
If it were Cutler and pick 12 for Picks 1 and 20, then we should pull the trigger. If not, then the three team deal I have been talking about with Cleveland makes the most sense to me.
If Cutler goes to Washington the deal is going to be Cutler for Campbell and a second rounder, I don’t see Denver taking this offer when Campbell is no where near the level a quarterback as Cutler is. But having Dan Snyder as an owner you never know he likes his shiny toys as much as Millen did.

Interesting Stats
Jon Kitna
06 – 4208 Yards, 21 TD, 22 Int, 63 SACKS
07 – 4068 Yards, 18 TD, 20 Int, 51 SACKS
Jay Cutler
08 – 4526 Yards, 25 TD, 18 Int, 11 SACKS
And for fun, Peppys last good year :
Daunte Culpepper
04 – 4717 Yards, 39 TD, 11 Int, 46 SACKS
The interesting thing to me here is Cutlers TD/Int ratio, and that is with only getting 11 sacks in 08. If you look at his numbers, the most he has ever been sacked is 15 times in a season. Culpepper got sacked that many times in 5 games with us last year.
I can easily see Cutlers numbers looking more like Kitnas when you add the extra 40 sacks in a season. Peppy has proven he is mobile and can play through the dirt in his face, Cutler i’m not so sure about. He already throws a lot of INTs and he doesn’t have defenders in his face every play.
Hold it on the Sack Assumption
Don’t immediately assume that the Lions will have the same number of sacks as with Kitna/Culpepper.
Lets look at the stats for 2008.
Kitna – 120 passes attempted with 15 sacks. That is one sack every 8 pass attempts.
Culpepper – 115 passes thrown and 14 sacks. That works out to one sack every 8 pass attempts.
Orlovsky – 255 passes thrown and 14 sacks. That’s one sack every 18 [eighteen!] attempts.
The point I am trying to make is that a QB’s sack rate is something he has some control over. It is not just about how bad, or good, his offensive line is. The QB’s release quickness, his recognition of the defence, vision of the field, and lastly mobility are all factors in how often he gets sacked.
I would not be surprised if Cutler continues to not get sacked as often as most QBs if he came to Detroit. What the info does show is that Orlovsky was light years ahead of Kitna and Culpepper in this regard.
Also Orlovsky had a much lower interception rate [3% vs 4.2% and 5.2] and a completion rate [56.1 vs 52% and 56.7%] as Culpepper and Kitna respectively.
By the way, Cutler’s interception rate in 2008 was 2.9%. Its not great, but it is no worse than average.

Good post North
While I understand that the QB has some control over how many sacks he takes, I still believe he is going to take a lot more than 11. His ability to overcome being sacked 5 or 6 times in a game is unknown.
The stats are interesting when looking at Orlovsky. Watching the games you felt like he was playing much better with less turnovers, but I didn’t realize how big of a difference. That makes me even more sad that he is gone.
Even ESPN is quoting the 2 first rounders price now. I think that is a little steep. I would love to have a proven Pro Bowl QB, but i’m just worried we will overpay and then find some kind of flaw in his game.
ESPN is saying they would probably want the #20 this year and our 1st next year, or maybe #20 and #33. Both of which, I agree with everyone else, is too much.
Great post!
Thanks guys
Spent my coffee break on that one.
Just to clarify, I am not trying to say Orlovsky was a world beater [obviously not] but that he was never as bad as a lot of people made him out to be. All some of these guys want to talk about with respect to Orlovsky is him running out of the end zone against Minnesota.
I think we all remember how long Kitna would hold the ball and his feeble attempts to run upfield. I think he made his line look worse than it was.
Great Post Northy
I think that when it comes down to it both the O-Line and the QB have parts in how mant sacks are allowed. A nimble QB with nice instincts and a quick release will escapse more sacks than your average QB. But if the pressure is coming quickly and often, even the most nimble QB will find himself on the ground. No, QB wants to be running for his life while trying to make the right throw in 2.5 seconds.

Does anyone
While I agree with you about Mayhew’s selling job, does it seem to anyone else like he might be overselling it?
This is why I say it:
1. He keeps talking about how he’s not going to talk, then he talks.
2. Some analogies:
a. A poker analogy: he seems to be trying to bluff by overplaying it, overselling, like “hey Stafford’s awesome… give us something for the pick.” or
b. A magician analogy: he’s pointing you to the shiny object he wants you to see a little too obviously.
I just don’t buy it. It’s almost too much. My guess is that because you hear nothing about him, there true interest is Monroe.
