Friday Notes: Lions Not "Locking In" on Stafford?

  • Tom Kowalski reports that the Lions have not made a decision about who the top will be just yet.  Serious contract talks haven't happened yet, and until they do (expected to begin next week), a clear No. 1 target won't emerge.
  • Lions players seem impressed with Daunte Culpepper.
  • Jordan Dizon will likely be a backup at outside linebacker.
  • George Foster thinks he can contend for a starting spot.  I obviously would have to disagree, as Foster has already had a chance to start on multiple occasions and lost his job both times.
  • Travis Fisher also believes he can secure a starting job, even though the Lions added a couple players to the secondary during the offseason.
  • SI.com's latest mock draft has the Lions selecting Jason Smith and Robert Ayers.
  • The 2009 NFL schedule will be announced at 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday.  I'll keep everyone updated on the Lions' schedule as it comes out.
  • In case you haven't already, check out SB Nation's new Pistons blog, Motown String Music.

I don't like the Ayers pick

I sincerely hope that SI.com mock doesn’t happen. Ayers has HUGE bust potential, and we already have a undersized, pass rushing DE. We must look elsewhere.

Stafford and Culpepper

This could be really fun watching up to the draft, Stafford will want mega bucks if picked #1 and if Culpepper really is in great shape, and Mayhew likes what he sees in him I wonder if he will have the gull to pass on Stafford and give Culpepper a year or two as our starting QB. Also I think Foster could save his career by moving to guard, Davis of the cowboys never cut it as a tackle but became a probowler as a guard from his size. I’m not saying Foster is a probowler but could become a starter.

More smokescreen

The Culpepper stuff is just more smokescreen. I think they are actually leaning towards Stafford and want to throw people off that scent. I bet we start talking to Monroe soon and people start saying we are taking him.

I'd think they'll take Stafford if he agrees to a contract before the draft

Otherwise they’ll take the best available player who WILL sign before the draft. No sense in another JaMarcus Russell incident where the player isn’t ready to go on day one. Waste of a pick if yu can’t get him signed.

I still think..

Culpepper can be good especially with 30 less pounds on him than last year. If you think of it he probably lost about 50 and put on 20 pounds of muscle. He does have a cannon to get it to Calvin so maybe we should take Jason Smith at #1, or Stanton can just have a year behind Culpepper because pep is definitely not our QB of the future.

stafford in motown

i agree that culpepper can be serviceable for another year. who knows, with some better protection, perhaps we might have a better idea of what we have.

i dont like the stafford pick at number one. i would agree with taking stafford first if we had gotten a starting tackle in free agency, but we didn’t. by drafting stafford first almost certainly guarantees that we will have to use the 20th pick on an offensive lineman. that’s two of the five high picks we have going to the offensive side of the ball, when the problems on defense have been well documented. you cant have as many problems on both the offensive and defensive lines as we have, and think that a qb will change that. we need to use this draft to bolster both lines and the defense and worry about quarterback next year. besides, i still think that graham harrell would do great in our offense, and will be available in later rounds.
