Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

what's your favorite lions moment?

I want everyone out there to take a quick five or ten minutes and remember what made you fall in love with the Lions.  Maybe it was a certain player, or a certain game, or a centain season?  Something made you love the Lions, win or lose - they're your Lions and you love them.

Was it the magic during the Barry Sander's years?  Was the fact that we always beat the Cowboys or the 49ers on Monday night football during the mid-90s?  How about the warrior, Chris Spielman, who gavehis heart on every play?  For you, it could be th enrougaing thumbs up given by Mike Utley as they pulled him away on a stretcher.  Anyway - you see where I'm going with this.

When did you fall in love with the Lion's?  What made you take the leap?

God bless the Detriot Lions!

I'll give you my NFL intro story

I was watching the pay TV one morning, and I flicked it on the sport channels to see what was on, since I’m a sport’s buff, like many Aussies. I happen to tune into the beginning of the 2002 season opener between the Giants & the 49ers (I remember it vividly because it was Jeremy Shockey’s first game). I decided to give the sport a go and found it exciting and also nicely structured, appealing to my nature of stat taking. After Watching the game, I decided I’ll pick a team to support.

Now, I went to NFL.com and looked at all the varied logos of the teams. Two caught my eye, the Atlanta Falcons and the Detroit Lions. I had no knowledge

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

Sorry, Accidentily hit post, this is continued..

I had no knoweledge of the Lions abysmal record and was going purely off a gut feeling (had bad that decision was). I picked the Lions purely because I liked the shape and simplicity of the logo.

Luckily for me, a couple of days later, the Lions were on TV,I don’t quite recall who we were against, GB maybe, I remember Rogers committing a stupid penalty which was crucial in our loss, anyway, after that game, I was settled. Lions were my team. The next few years I kept up to date with how the Lions were going. But, in about 2006, my support really kicked up and has grown so much that now I constantly check Lions sites and have my own official jersey and framed Calvin Johnson photo.

Now, I said all that so I can get to answering your question. I can think of a couple of moments, which are mainly from when I’ve seen them on TV. First, CJ’s TD scamper to defeat Tampa Bay in 2007. Second, Shaun Rogers Interception return against Denver 2007 and Third, that few minutes against the Packers in 2008 were CJ nearly got us back for a win until Kitna forgot how to pass the football.

Sorry about the long post, but I though I should explain why my favourtie moments would be recent.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

You mentioned mine

I think my favorite Lions moment has to be the Denver game in 2007. Watching them just destroy the Broncos and Shaun Rogers rumbling for that TD that was the most fun I’ve ever had watching a football game.

by AZ Yooper on Apr 13, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Mine as well

The Shaun Rogers return is one of my most recent favorites, but the Barry years are when I really started watching the Lions. I used to be a 49ers fan when I was young (and they were good) before I moved to Michigan.

Nothing that I...

watched on TV. I was five yers old. And my Grandfather would read to me. From this book that was all about the Championship teams of the 50’s. And from that point on I watched and love the Lions. ( if he could just have been a Steelers fan) I would be alot my sane. But, then again. It would not have been as fun. GO LIONS.

what i remember..

was watching barry sanders, rodney pete, andre ware, eric kramer, herman moore, spielman play every week……. even good ’ol wayne fontz taking the lions to a 9-7, 10-6 record every year make the playoffs and lose in the first round. what i would give for those days again. i dont need a superbowl, just be in the fight every year playing games that count.

Greatest moment would be...

…my first live Lions game at old Tiger stadium in 1971, Green Bay at Detroit. Landry threw 4 td’s that day and the Lions won 31-28. I’ll never forget that game or how it made me a Lions fan for life.

Lions at Baltimore

Back in the 60’s I remember watching on TV as the Colts had just scored in the last few seconds to take the lead on a pass to Lenny Moore. In the last 15 or so seconds Jim Gibbons caught a pass and ran the length of the field for the game winning touchdown.

by willy410 on Apr 12, 2009 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

To be honest, It hasn't happened yet.

Don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of highlights with Charlie Sanders [he used to make an impossible catch every Thanksgiving], Lem Barney, Billy Sims [ I remember him staggering into the end zone with a defensive tackle of the Chiefs literally on his back], Barry Sanders, Kevin Jones, Shaun Rogers, and Calvin Johnson [his TD catch down the middle against Indy (or Chicago?) this year where he flew into the end zone was magic] that I will always remember. But I am waiting for a tight victory in a playoff game. The closest has been when they beat the Jets at the end of the 1997 season to get into the playoffs and Barry reached 2000 yards rushing. Good, tough game with a great result.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 12, 2009 12:16 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

The best moment is yet to come. After the rebuilding process nears its end (probably in another 2 years) and the Lions get their first sniff at a playoff chance, and finally come away with that clutch victory that had every fan across the city of Detroit clutching their seats, and analysts stop making fun of the Lions and actually consider them a tough opponent. THAT’S going to be my moment.

My favorite moment was at a game against Minn yrs ago at the sliverdome.Could see a bunch of fans standing and looking at something,So of course thought it was a good fan fight remember lots of those back then. But it turned out to be Marilyn Chambers A famous porn star at a lions game got to love it baby.

Terry Fair had the pick 6 against Culpepper? I think I was at the same game. Small world

Billy Sims

that guy was a badass. I played pick-up games as a 6-yr old and would bust out the Sims straight-arm and knock the 12-yr olds on their butt.
I was at the Thur. night game against Chicago at the Silverdome and saw Barry literally breaking ankles. Him leaping out of the pile, Mark Carrier pick 2 off, Germane Crowell with the one-handed touchdown catch. My gramps got me into football. He didn’t mind me rooting for the Lions. I started rooting for the Cowboys during the 4:00 games and got thoroughly disgusted. He turned off the TV, sat me down and told me to NEVER root for the Cowgirls but to cheer on the Steelers. I think I was 4 at the time. I’ve hated the Cowboys ever since and loved the Lions and Steelers

Best running back of all-time, no question. He was one of those rare athletes that you stopped everything for just to watch what he was going to do.

I still love

Barry’s run against the Pats where he turned the safety around like 3 times then finally ran past him for a TD.

Barry was fun to watch even when he had a bad run

Yeah, I remember that run. He could change direction at full speed like no one before or after him. Everyone remember that season they had Barry Sanders, Brett Perriman, and Herman Moore. Those guys were so good that year they made Scott Majkowski look good.

Favorite Moments

I have many. And though it would be difficult to mention one without Barry Sanders, one of my favs go back a few years. I believe it the 1970 season. The Lions were playing Green Bay. Already leading by a ton, they were forced to punt. But instead of sending the punter out, they lined up in punt formation with Lem Barney as the punter. As one might expect, instead of punting, Barney took off, got to the sideline, and in for the score.
As memory serves, I believe the final score of that game was 40-0, Detroit. They went to the playoffs that year, but were defeated by the Cowboys by a whoping score of 5 – 0! What a game that was!

by daj1257 on Apr 12, 2009 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

They beat Green Bay 20-0 later that year.

The 40-0 game also included a 76 yard QB sneak by Greg Landry who was in on mop up duty. Good times!

Thanksgiving 1997

Lions were losing to the Bears at half-time and the outlook was not good. I remember a good portion of the crowd leaving at that point. My buddy Erik and I stayed around and were treated to not only the Lions coming alive for a second half rally, but they shutout the Bears in the second half and won 55-20, and we got to see Barry Sanders break the record for most consecutive games with over 100 yards rushing. I still have the ticket stub for the game.

Close second is the Minnesota game in 2001, it was our first win of the season (0-13 up to that point) and it felt like we won the Superbowl. I think most of the crowd was still there 30 minutes after the game ended.

My best moment

I was stationed at FT Hood TX went to see my Father and Brother in Houston who traveled with a group from Detroit to see the Lions play the Oilers, as luck would have it a couple couldn’t make the trip and an army buddy and myself got to attend the game with the two extra tickets. During that game Billy Sims broke a run to the outside and literally ran right over the top of two players 6ft in the air on a players shoulder still running ,after the play the fans busted out a loud cheer and gave him a standing ovation never in my life would I ever concieved an opposing team cheering for a Lion the way the Astrodome crowd cheered for Billy Sims that day. My army buddy from North Carolina became a Lions fan that day.

Hey! You stole my memory!

I don’t recall when I became a Lions fan, it just happened because they were the local team and they were on TV. And frankly, I can more easily make a list of disappointing moments….but the first moment I really remember beign a Lions fan is the play you describe here, where Billy Sims was stepping on people’s heads in the middle of a play.

I haven’t seen the play in ages, so, ok, maybe he stepped on shoulders instead…but as a kid, it was awesome watching your first sports hero flying through the air, almost literally….

My moment..

I was 12 and my stepfather took me to a training camp back when the team practiced at Meadow Brook, and I got to meet the team. I have a 1989 Restore the Roar brochure in hand and I am getting autographs, and my stepfather is pointing me around this hugh athletes instructing me on which ones I need to make sure I get. I managed to get Chris Spielman, Barry, Utley, and Andelsac (spelling). Chris and Barry were amazingly personable and actually asked if I played ball and what position, and I, from then on,was a fan. Mainly just a fan of the two in the begining because some of the other guys didn’t really seem that interested in dealing with us, but the love/hate afair grew as i did. haha.

Barry Sanders

I could watch the guy play for a week straight and not get bored. The way he could run into a pile of pads and helmets and suddenly appear 15 yards downfield. The anklesnapping jukes, anything he did was like magic. Howie Long and the Raiders got me into football but Barry was like seeing the Virgin Mary on a pancake. Can’t be explained and didn’t really mean much since they never did that great but awe inspiring none the less

Barry Sanders vs the Chicago Bears Thanksgiving 1997

It’s about 2:25 seconds into this terrible quality video but he’s on around the 30 and just makes two Bears defenders who are fully square against him look incredibly stupid. This is just one of many of his runs that just made you jump up and scream “oooh, no way” at your television watching this guy.

Mike Utley

For me nothing tops the ’91 season. Not only were the Lions great all the way until their loss in the playoffs, but Mike Utley cemented my fandom. I was 12, and only watched the Lions because my soon to be brother-in-law. who I looked up to, was from the Detroit area and was a big fan. I was at my grandmothers house watching the game when Utley was injured. His resolve, courage, and attitude were and still are amazing, and he had an obvious effect on his teammates the rest of the season. While I wish he had never been injured, the way he and the team handled it are easily my proudest moments as a Lions fan. On a side note, my brother in law, who was in the Navy, died in ’97 at the age of 35. I wish he could have witnessed a Lions championship, but I will be a lifelong Lions fan because of him and I will witness it one day for the both of us.

I'm a Giants fan

but I’ve always liked the Lions, and the reason is Barry Sanders. We never got many Lions games in New York growing up, but every Thanksgiving I would get so excited to plop down in front of the TV with my dad and my uncle and just watch Barry go crazy. I used to root so hard for him to have a better game on Turkey Day than Emmit, and for that one day every year I was as big a Lions fan as a Giants fan. Even though Barry is gone, I still root for the Lions every Thanksgiving.

I agree with both of these comments

Emmitt was very good, and he always killed the Giants, but Sanders could do things that nobody else, before or since, could do. Give Sanders a Hall of Fame O-line, QB, and WR and he would be the one with multiple rings and the all-time rushing record.

1) watching luther elliss dominate at d-tackle.

2) the photo of the lions offensive lineman (i think it was glover and ray roberts) carrying barry on their shoulders after breaking the 2000 yard mark, with a headline that simply read “the lion king.” nuff said.

3) watching mark carrier knock the snot out of anyone that came over the middle

I have 3 favorite moments

I have been watching the Lions since I was a little boy, and my Dad is the reason that I am a Lion’s fan, as he was (and still is). In my fondest memories of the Lions, 3 memories stand out above all of the rest. I was in attendence for each of these moments, and I will never forget them. The best memory I have of the Lions was the very first time Barry Sanders ran the ball for the Lions. In my mind there is some controversy on this factoid, because I was there, but what I remember is him taking off for 21 yards on his first touch (the crowd went absolutely bezerk and immediately started chanting “Barry, Barry!”. I swear, the Silverdome almost fell down that day, it was that electric. Some say it was 18 yards, others say less, but I was there and I remember it being 21 yards. My second favorite memory of the Lions came in the 1991 season against the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions were already up 27-10, and the Cowboys were driving in the Lions redzone. Aikman took the snap and a three step drop, turned and threw to his right side (the lefy side of the defense). All of a sudden a BLUE streak flashed in front of the ball, and the next thing you know Ray Crockett is dancing backwards into the opposing endzone on a 97 yard interception return to put the Lions ahead 34-10. Once again, I thought the dome was going to come crashing down on our heads, as the crown went ape shit. It was AWESOME! My third favorite memory came against the Green Bay Packers in 1993. The Packers had already beaten the Lions in Lambeau that year, 26-17, and they were in Detroit for round 2. It was the last game of the season that year, and the Lions had a 9-6 record, while the Pack was also sitting at 9-6. Brett Favre threw four interceptions that day, and the best one he threw from his knees. This was back when I HATED Brett Favre, and it was sweet justice in my mind to watch him flounder like a fish out of water. That is the worst game i ever saw Brett Favre play, and I was there once again. It is forever b8urned in my memory, the interception he threw from his knees, and I clearly remember my little brother and I (we were 16 and 17 years old respectively) telling Packer fans on our way into the game and on our way out of the game, that “We would rather be dead than have cheese on our heads”! LOL! There are so many memories that I have that there are too many to post. I have been to a Lions game every single year since 1991, the last being last season against the Vikings in Ford Field on December 7th. I thought we were actually going to win that game, and we almost did. One last parting memory…..just because it is funny and my best friend brings it up every year……him and I were in the fifth row on the 30 yard line, behind the Cleveland Browns bench. This was back when the Browns had Jim McMahon. Ol McMahon was warming up on the sideline directly in front of us, smiling away and having a good ol time. I stood up and yelled “HEY MCMAHON!” He stopped and looked right at me……I grinned and said “You’re nothing without DITKA!!” LOL! He was so pissed that he threw the ball over the head of the guy he was warming up with on the next throw!!! LMAO! Everyone around me was laughing and clapping and saying YEAH! It was hilarious. I love the Lions with all that is me. I will forever be a Lions fan, no matter what happens. GO LIONS!

Billy Sims

Was something special…..the precursor to Barry Sanders if you will, but more of a Gayle Sayers type of runner. I remember highlights of Billy Sims doing a drum major’s kick out of the tunnel, and one where he leaped over the head of a defender……he was simply amazing, and it is too bad that his career was cut short because of injury.

Billy was one of the strongest runners I have ever seen.

He was not the fastest guy in the world, especially after his first injury, but he was explosive and very strong.

He would of had a Hall of Fame career without those injuries.

one more good and two bad .........

one good is ….the first game of the season in 99 when barry sanders had just shocked everyone and retired ….everyone counted us out and we went with bobby ross and our first game of the season out to seattle and kicked the crap out of the seahawks with mike holghum …that was awesome ,…herman moore had like 180 yards ..that took some of the sting out of barrys retirement , and I still think bobby ross was the best coach the lions had since 1970 ….
two bad memories …..one was the 1970 dallas game in the conferece final when we lost 5-3 …what the hell kind of score is that ?
and the last second field goal the bears kicked in 99 that knocked us out of the playoffs forever , so far ….
another could be the 91 conference final when the redskins beat our ass , god I hate the redskins …they always beat us ….I hope we put up about 55 on them this year ..it is so embarressing to alwyas lose to them .

Sanders handing the ball to the ref.

Barry made the games worth watching – whether the Lions won or not. It was simply unbelievable how he could change direction time after time. Just as amazing was his ability to break out of tackles. I wish I could remember the game ( and promise to post it if I do )… Barry had two defenders holding onto his legs. Three others were piling on top of him. For 2-3 seconds he completely disappeared underneath his tacklers. Then, all of a sudden, he came out the other side and broke free from the five defenders. He ran about another 15 yards and scored a TD.

Then, he walked the football over to the ref and simply handed it to him. No spiking, or dunking, or fist waving or dancing. This was the most incredible run I have ever witnessed. To Barry, it was just a job well done. He definitely behaved like he’d been there before.

Barry’s TD against the Cowboys in their only playoff win the last 50 years. I just remember a pile gathered around Barry and I figured he had a short gain, like he had all the rest of the day. The next thing I knew, the pile cleared and Barry had not gone down. When players started to clear, he was on his way for 6!

Nope....

I was referring to the last game played in the Silverdome…..it was against the Cowboys in 2001. Ty Detmer hit Johnny Morton for the winning TD and the Lions won just their 2nd game of the season. Johnny Morton did the worm in the endzone, and I lost my voice screaming my head off.

by KDawg on Apr 21, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Batch played for the Lions from 1998-2001

Never once starting all 16 games. Germane Crowell played for the Lions from 1998-2002, 1999 being the only year he did anything. In 1999 the closest thing I can find is a 57 yard pass to Crowell and a 12 yard TD pass to Morton for the win against the Kurt Warner led STL Rams on November 7, 1999. Batch got injured in that game and Frerotte came in and went 12-16 for 209 and 2 TD’s. STL won the Superbowl with Warner in 1999. They went to the SB and lost to the Pats in 2001 with Warner at the helm, but they spanked the Lions 35-0 that year in their only game against Detroit. They did not play the Lions in 2002, and by then Batch was gone and Crowell was in his last year in Detroit, playing in only 10 games and starting in only 5.

i started watching the lions when i was a kid in the sixties. my dad would yell at the screen when they screwed up, and cheer when they did good. i remember lem barney scooping up a motionless football from the ground after a punt despite the fact that it was surrounded opposing players. i remember mel farr held up by a db at his ankle throw a forearm into the chops of the safety who thought he had a free shot at him. in pickup games as a kid i wanted to be charlie sanders on offense, and alex karras on defense. i cheered for billy sims, and steve owen and was crushed when their carrers were cut too short by injury. it didn’t matter that they didn’t win championships i remember (but i was alive for the last one). it didn’t matter because it was a passion i learned from dad. it’s a passion i’ll carry to the grave, because there will always be next year.

Barry F'ing Sanders

I remember in 1994, being at a game with my Dad and watching Barry run nearly the length of the field after losing his shoe. I was only 8 at the time, but that was my first football game, and watching Barry was amazing.

New to the Site

When I was a kid I loved USC football and basicly followed Rodney Pete to the Lions. I’ve been a Lions fan ever since. Barry Sanders, Fontz, Run-N-Shoot, I’ve been on board eversince.

I’ve lived in San Diego and now Portland Oregon and I think i’ve got to be the only Lions fan in Oregon. I get a lot of smack when football season comes around but I’m a loyalists.

So glad to find a place where I’m not the only Lion around.

Around 5 years ago...

The Lions were down about 16-23, 20-27, against the Vikings (7-point defecit). The Lions drove down the field and scored a TD with 30-60 secs left in the game. I was watching with buddies, and one of the, said jokingly, ‘its the lions. watch them miss the extra point’

of course, they did. it wasnt blocked, either. Hanson just flat out missed it.

ill never forget that game!!
