It is sad to see him go. Collinsworth will likely take over.

This

is the best news I have heard in a long time. Unfortunately, I will probably still have to listen to him in Madden ’10

He wasn't even in Madden last year

It was Tom Hammond and Collinsworth.

I liked Madden but it's a couple years over-due

What I liked best he would never fly. I envisioned an airplane crashing into the Madden Cruiser when I was younger, KARMA

He'll be missed...

…by me, anyway. I’ve always enjoyed his commentary, even though I’ve always been in the minority in that regard.
Also, I can’t stand Cris Collinsworth.

If anyone can continue on the legacy of an ..

annoying commentator, its Chris Collingsworth.

About time he retired

I always muted him. Then he works with Al Micheals, who I like, so I had to put up with him. I’m not a fan of Collinsworth either, but I can tolerate him more than Millen.

Madden

I was always 50/50 on John. First he’s the driving force behind the best video game franchise in history. But he’s also 1/2 retarded if someone doesn’t rein him in occasionally. But no matter what he was a guy who LOVED tackle football and deserves respect from fans because of how much of his life he dedicated to it.
Love him or hate him he got into your head.

And they say that 90% of the game is half mental.

I'll miss him

I don’t think they’ll ever find somebody so jovial and flamboyant with so many strange, head-scratching, obvious, or illogical comments.

Some of my favorites…

The goal of football is to score more points than your opponent.

90% of football is half mental.

Mark Brunell likes to soak his balls before a rainy game.

60% of the time that play will always work.

Don’t worry about the horse being blind, just load the wagon.

Coaches have to watch for what they don’t want to see and listen to what they don’t want to hear.

The road to Easy Street goes through the sewer.

Yes, turns out yellow and red make green, I found this out when I spilled yellow mustard on my red tie and it turned lime green not orange.

Wasn’t "Vixen" the name of one of Santa’s reindeer?

Whenever you talk about a Mike Shananhan offense, you always talk about his offense.

That wasn’t a boom! Al, that was more like a WACK!

Here’s a guy who when he runs, he moves faster.

Hey Al, you ever kick bag of bolts?

A fumble is a fumble when he fumbles, and that My Sexy Little Pixie was a fumble!

From the waist down, Earl Campbell has the biggest legs I have ever seen on a running back.

Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they’re bigger than everybody else, and that’s what makes them the biggest guys on the field.

He was waiting for something to develop and, WHAP! He got developed!

Real frontier-busting math explores new worlds… If you can communicate that experience, somewhere between math and uncertainty, life experience provides the balance.

With all his tumid boasts, he’s like the sword-fish, who only wears his weapon in his mouth.

I think comparisons are odious.

Where'd you get this list?

It can’t be from memory. You must have found these on the internet somewhere. Most sound reminiscent of Madden, but some of these are questionable as real quotes.

no, not from memory :-)

but I was having a convo with some friends just the other week about funny stuff Madden said, so I just did a few web searches for “Madden Quotes”. Most of these quotes appeared on several result sets, and I remember a few of them, but I guess I can’t formally verify each one.

They do seem to be just too hilarious

I only remember one

I don’t remember when, but a long time ago he was talking about offensive line versus defensive line, and he said that the line that gets lower to the ground is going to win because they are closer to the grass and therefore get more oxygen. Not making it up.

My favorite was during a Super Bowl...

think it was Denver vs. Atlanta (33, I think)… anyway, he starting going on a tangent about eating sandwiches…. in the middle of broadcasting to billions and he’s thinking with his stomach. Priceless. Great guy and sportscaster… he’ll be missed.

Hands down, best color commentator in NFL history!

This is a sad day. Madden was an absolute joy to listen to and his simplistic approach brought out the splendor of the game. His knowledge of the game was second to none, yet he had the subtlety to convey that intricate message to all ages and do so in his jovial, likeable manner.

If in fact Collinsworth takes over, that’s a good choice. But you can’t replace a legend. Also, I’d be remissed if I didn’t mention his contribution to the gaming industry. Name me one football fan that hasn’t been obsessed with one or more versions of Madden and I’ll prove that he’s not a true football fan!
