Jerry Green hates Mel Kiper as much as I do
Jerry Green from the Detroit News has written a fantastic article extolling on the virtues, knowledge and capabilities of self-proclaimed draft guru, Mel Kiper. He goes on to say that because Mel Kiper picks Stafford at #1, the Lions would be wise to listen.
Fantastic article and funny read. Thanks, Jerry.
Mel Kiper (and Todd McShay) are complete and total idiots. Let them yell at each other and please guys, leave the rest of us out of it. No one except ESPN gives a crap what you think. If you want knowledgeable information, listen to Mike Mayock over at the NFL network.

please feel free to kill me for this ...
I hate Mel Kiper as much as the next guy but that doesn’t mean I won’t listen to him and give him credit on something. For instance, he has spent 25 years turning watching College Football and preparing notes on the draft into a career (which is pretty cool). And sure he gets a lot big ones wrong (BMW to be specific). And if I had to name one thing I hate most it’s the fact that he jumps on players as either guys he likes or doesn’t like and rarely changes his opinion. He has been blasting Jay Cutler still and I believe it’s been mentioned before on here that he has said Stafford would be the #1 overall pick when he came out going all the way back to high school (sounds like some has an agenda). All that being said I do listen when he is talking the guys that might be ranked 4-10 and are potential 3rd round or later picks. I don’t have time to watch as much football as he does so I will trust what he says on them regardless of how big a douche bag he is. Just thought I would try and cut him a lit slack when I know it’s much easier to kill him (and I know I have).

Hey
If he really pegged a high school senior as even a 1st round NFL pick, I would be impressed.

I would be as well
But Kiper is all about the show. He may do research but all he does is lecture teams trying to tell them what they should do and then slam them when they don’t listen to the All-Mighty Mel. He’s an ass. I do much prefer Mayock as he does analysis and doesn’t seem to go off on teams and isn’t all about himself instead of being about the game. Besides, Bill Tobin’s comments are hilarious.

Mel Kiper
Always has his own agenda, he makes the right picks occasionally, but if he was wrong he refuses to admit it. He always wants to make himself look good (which is impossible, considering his hair) Stafford is a perfect example, Kiper predicted he would a #1 pick before he ever threw a pass (Link) Now he just wants to make himself look like a genius by hyping up Stafford nonstop. He makes me sick.

If the Lions
decide to draft Stafford I am sure it is because they(Lions) think he is the right pick. The only problem I have with this article is this. I really doubt that too many GM’s pay attention to what Kiper Big Board looks like. So who’s really at fault when a player becomes a bust or not. And most of Mel ’s statements are more of “showmenship” for the purpose of TV. With that being said. What is up with his hair? Oh, and draft Curry.

Struggling to find the link at the moment
But earlier I read somewhere that Curry fell to 7 on Mayock’s updated prospect list…..He had Eugene Monroe #1. I will see if I can find it…..
by KDawg on Apr 19, 2009 1:43 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think....
That Mike Mayock has a hard time making up his mind…..one minute Curry is the safest pick in the draft, and the next minute he says that Monroe is the best player in the draft. I have been reading conflicting stories all over the place today…..some saying Monroe will fall because of injury issues. Christ…..I just wish the Lions would come out and say we have signed “Joe Draftpick from wherever state university” and get it over with. These GD analysts and draft gurus don’t have a clue, and even if they did the Lions are known for doing what nobody thought they would or should do. Mel Kiper has been an ESPN analyst for over 25 years…..and while I rarely agree with him, there are times when I do. I think it is good that he sticks to his guns and doesn’t waver. Right or wrong, he never backs down. That is about the only good thing I can say about him. Mayock’s opinion is respectable, but he is all over the place. I wonder if he consults Doug Flutie since they both came from BC? As for Kiper’s hair…..it looks like some exotic roadkill with a bunch of soul glow and brylcream in it to make it look like hair.

I know
I saw that too. I also found an old 2007 mock draft comment. He was talking about Marcus McNeil was a “medical retard”.

I think he
has about the same success rate as Kiper. It just that Kiper is alot more visible than Mayock

your an idiot
I don’t know what you been smoking ? Mike Mayock is the biggest idiot of them all. He’s got Curry ranked 7th in this years draft class ahead of him he’s got in order from his 1st to his 6th monroe, crabtree, ayers, moreno, pettigrew, and j. smith. This guy is retarted to put ayers ahead of orkapo let alone even consider him a top ten player ( third overall in his eyes.) and for you to think he’s better than either one of espn’s analyst makes you the biggest idoit of them all, idiot!

Orakpo is...
A workout warrior, much like the esteemed Vernon Gholston. I agree that Curry should be higher than others on the prospect list, however, before posting, I think you should rub your earlobes and say WOOOOOSSSAAAAAAAHHHH.

Wow, take a chill pill
If you’ll notice, Mayock’s list is the top PROSPECTS, not a mock draft. Did you see anywhere he says he had the Lions taking Monroe? DOH! Nope, not there. Pay attention, dude.

I have to agree that I do not like Mayocks new list
But I also disagree that he is more of an idiot than Kiper or McShay. At the very least, they are all equal in their stupidity…..lol. Fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter what any of them say. In the end it will be a choice made by men who do not listen to the ramblings of McShay, Kiper, or Mayock. Those guys are there to create arguments for guys like us.
by KDawg on Apr 19, 2009 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Very true
It’s just easier to listen to Mayock and the NFL Network than to Kiper/McShay and the east coast bias network (ESPN). I have respect for Mayock and none for Kiper/McShay. It’s the teams that will make the decision. Kiper has even said that he has no idea what the Lions are thinking because teams don’t talk to him. Why would they? He’s just guessing, same as the rest of us.

This was a fanpost and Sean moved it to the front page. It’s a pretty good article by Jerry Green and worth the read as most folks here don’t like Kiper or McShay.

What is that supposed to mean?
It’s fine if you disagree with the article (go ahead and say so), but I don’t know if that’s a jab at Jettero or what. He has been on POD for a long time and is a respected member of the community, so I don’t get what your implication is by your statement.
And as Jettero said, he wrote a FanPost, as you can see by it being listed in the FanPost section. I was going to write something about the article and since Jettero did it already, I decided not to waste my time and simply move his FanPost to the front page.

So was I. It is in the format of a Fanpost, not your usual front page posts. That doesn’t mean its a shot at the quality of Jettero’s post.
Although to be honest, you could sure read it that way.

I have a problem with Mr. Green's article.
Its one thing to rip into Kiper for his arrogance and poor judgment, but how about spending a little time and actually review more than six examples. I’m sure every football analyst has been wrong more than six times in twenty plus years. I’m guessing Mr. Green has been wrong more than that over the last two years.
How about going back between fifteen and five years and check out his player evaluations versus the actual performance of the players? Restrict it to his top twenty or thirty rated guys.
I’d do it but I don’t have the time and frankly am not paid to do it. Just another example of our lazy press at work.

who isn't an idiot then?
I hate Kiper, but McShay isn’t that bad, and at least he used to be a pro scout. Who all isn’t considered an idiot though? Most guys are going to have high profile busts you can point out, but its not like they are all busts, they have to hit on at least some of them in order to keep their jobs.

They bring it on themselves
I think Kiper, McShay, and to some extent Mayock bring it on themselves by the way they define their work. If they managed to report in an informative an entertaining way all of the scouting info, team needs, insider opinion, and try to guess who the teams might pick, then all this would be unwarranted and harsh. I would enjoy watching them.
But, they choose to market themselves as know it alls who tell the teams who they SHOULD pick and tell the audience what they HAVE TO believe and therefore the giant pile on when they are wrong is warranted.
A lot like pre game shows that tell us without a doubt who is going to win and why we’re nuts to think otherwise, as opposed to simply analyzing the odds and telling us who is more likely to win and why.

Think Hooray just said
it’s not that they are wrong. It’s that they bill themselves as know everything about the game types and not as simply fans of the game making educated guesses. You listen to Kiper and you’d think Detroit should have signed Matt Stafford the day after the superbowl and they’re idiotic for even considering someone else.
But grain of salt taken, your name is Brady Quinn is (a) beast or best…sooooo I’ll concede that you might be one of those I like what I like types and not doing much else but going on gut instinct or favortism

I typically respect Mayock's opinion
But by no means do I think it’s the be all and end all. I generally avoid Kiper and McShay, since they don’t have the best reputation on POD and I guess I respect the opinions of the people here more than I do guys elsewhere.
I also agree with Hooray, I think that Kiper and the like present themselves as guys who know best, yet sometimes they clearly don’t.

The thing that occurred to me the other night was
If Mel Kiper is such a draft expert, why does his own network set up what seems to be a daily argument with Todd McShay about who’s better?
Men write many fine and plausible arguments in support of monarchy, but the fact remains that where every man in a state has a vote, brutal laws are impossible.
