Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

"We said all along we want to build this team through the draft," Lions president Tom Lewand said Wednesday, declining to speak about Cutler specifically because of NFL tampering rules.

"A lot of teams say that. But the ones who are disciplined about that approach actually do it. So we have to be cognizant of that goal and that philosophy and have the discipline to stick to that.

"That doesn't mean you don't make trades. But it means you do so with the recognition you're giving away the opportunity to add to your core through the draft and the recognition that it's the most important way to construct a foundation."

Tom Lewand makes it sound like a trade for Jay Cutler is unlikely.

I hear Denver is asking for at least a No. 1 this year and a No. 1 next year

I don’t know how that can be possible. Denver has already said they are going to trade him, so they have to realize they are going to get, at best, $.75 on the dollar.

As much as I want to see Cutler with the Lions, the Browns are really the only team I can see pulling this off, they could give up Quinn and their two second round picks (or their 1st round pick) for Cutler.

Thank God!!!

Sounds like Lewand knows what he’s talking about (Obviously I’m against Cutler)!

I’m a big Curry guy myself, but I will admit, the more I read/hear/watch about Stafford, the more I’m starting to think that taking him might not be a bad idea.

The only thing I worry about though is how the defense will be addressed in the draft if we end up taking Stafford first; do we forget about it in order to build up that offensive line? Is that really wise?

Sounds to me...

…..like he is passing on QBs, period, for now. “The core” building sounds to me like they will go O-line or defensive.

They still need another year...

Draft Stafford, sit him for a year so that he can learn the system. Stick with Crappy Culpepper for one more season while you restrucure the o-line with the drafts and free agencies, and then start again with a solid nucleus.

The Lions aren’t hopeless, but the management needs to actually think through a move for a change.

I found this today. Funny satire blog that really assesses Culpepper quite well.

LOL

That is f’ing hilarious. But really…shouldn’t it be called the Scott Mitchell Award?

Why Draft Stafford?

Why? Seriously, why? We would benefit so much more by drafting a solid OT like Smith or Monroe. SOOO much more. Then, we can find a QB between now and 2010…put him in there, and he’ll have a decent O-line to be behind.

Draft Stafford, and you lose the ability to put good, young talent around him….

According to Mortenson

“The Lions are interested in Cutler and would be willing to send the Broncos the first pick in the draft. But the Broncos don’t want it. Rather, the Broncos would ask for the Lions’ second first-round pick (No. 20) and possibly their second-rounder (No. 33), or another first-round pick in 2010. The Lions don’t believe they can financially bear the burden of paying for the first pick in this year’s draft, as well as sign Cutler to a contract extension.”

Looks like any deal the Lions make for Cutler will have to involve the #1 overall. And since Denver doesn’t want that pick, looks like he’s headed elsewhere.

by wumanchu01 on Apr 2, 2009 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

Not necessarily...

We could give the 20 and 33 to Denver for Cutler…trade the #1 to someone who definitely wants it for equal compensation (a later 1st rounder and a second rounder)…save the money in that regard, pick up some solid young talent, and you’re golden.

I am going to go out on a limb here

And say he is not going to trade for Cutler because the price is too high. I hope the Bears lost their shirt on this deal.
