Jay Cutler Traded to Chicago
Mile High Report just got word from the Broncos that Jay Cutler has been traded to the Bears. The Broncos sent out a brief press release, and details of the trade aren't available yet since the deal isn't completely official yet. More to come.
UPDATE: Here are the details of the trade:
To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, along with a third-round pick in 2009.
To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back a fifth-round pick in 2009.
That is quite the package, and based on Tom Lewand's comments that I posted earlier today, the Lions weren't willing to give up quite that much, nor did they have a decent QB to give the Broncos in return.

Wow
That sucks. I don’t want to have to face Cutler twice a year.
I hope Chicago gave up their entire draft

Don't worry--look at the PROTECTION he's stuck with in Chi-town compared to Denver!!
okay, look at the protection he got in Denver in 2008 compared to what Chicago QB’s got in 2008:
Denver 2008:
632 dropbacks (3rd most in NFL)
12 sacks (tied—least in NFL)
sacked 1.9% of the time — Yes, 1.9%, that’s even better than what Brady got in 2007 (significantly)
Chicago 2008:
557 dropbacks (13th most)
29 sacks (14th most)
sacked 5.21% of the time
I know Jay Cutler was a first-round pick and all, but seriously now, give Dan Orlovsky the kind of protection that Cutler got in Denver, and Dan-O competes for a Pro Bowl too!
I’m not worried. Think of all the talent we won’t have to face in Chicago now that they lost a boatload of draft picks!
If Cutler pouts and moans in Denver—the ideal offense for a QB to play in—great protection, great run game, how’s he going to react to Chicago.
I’m starting the Cutler Meltdown Watch…

Well..
Cutler is a LOT more mobile than Orton, which accounts for some of those sack differences.
Additionally, Chicago has added 3 new linemen including Orlando Pace and last year’s first rounder is now healthy (he was injured in training camp).
Chicago will have 8 picks in this years draft., including at least one in every round except the first, and at least 6 picks in next year’s draft including one in every round except the first.
The bears lost a total of 3 picks for an All-Pro QB.

yeah, good points
except “All-Pro”, we’ll see if that ever happens, although one pro bowl in 2 years is still pretty good.

Loooks like
They gave up 2009 2010 first rounders and Kyle Orton

That's awful...
….did not want him to end up in our division. SUCK.

But personally...
…I think they got robbed….the Bears, that is. They gave up A LOT. Cutler better win Super Bowls for them.

True that
Bears don’t have anyone that Cutler can throw to. Plus now we get to see the real matchup twice a year Cutler v. Stafford. I am glad the Lions didn’t give up that much for Cutler.

Lastly...
…he has no one to throw to in Chicago. Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal type players are not there currently.

Rahied Davis, Devin Hester, Brandon Lloyd, Greg Olsen, Desmond Clark
by KDawg on Apr 2, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
exactly, "no one"
Rashied Davis = former arena player, 1 TD per year average over 4 years
Devin Hester = 482 yards, 2.5 TD average on offense over the 2 years he’s pretending to be a WR
Brandon Lloyd = 375 yards, 2.5 TD’s per year average over 6 years
Greg Olsen = 482 yards, 3.5 TD per year average over 2 years
Desmond Clark = 343 yards, 2.5 TD per year average over ten years (getting old)
I don’t see anybody I’m terribly afraid of, do you guys? See any Brandon Marshall’s there?
Cutler’s going to be frustrated.
Plus, who can Chicago draft now that they lose a 1st and 3rd and 1st(2010)?
by n4ry4 on Apr 2, 2009 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
In two years with the Lions, by comparison...
Shaun McDonald has averaged 637 yards and 3.5 TD’s.
I’ll be worried when Chicago acquires a target as good Shaun McDonald! (heheh)

You forgot ...
Earl Bennett … LOL. The Bears do not have a #1 or a #2 reciever (Hester is a gadget player, nothing more). Olsen and Clark are decent tight ends and Forte is effective out of the backfield but even with Cutler the Bears will struggle to get the ball to the outside.

Part of the problem
Frankly, part of the problem is they had bad quarterbacks throwing to them. Orton and Grossman don’t exactly make stars out of any receiver.
Chicago will have 8 draft picks this year, and was unlikely to draft a receiver in the first round anyway.

robbed
I agree I think the bears got robbed as well. The lions couldnt afford to give up that much just for one player the only thing that I am disappointed about is facing him twice a year. We will find our QB for just one draft pick either this year or next. I am not sad that we didnt have to give up two first rounders and a player for someone that was once again wining saying that he never wanted out of Denver. We dont need that

Wow...
That is insane. Now I understand why Lewand came out to the press. If that is the kind of offer they wanted us to make, then he was exactly right. If you look at the what we would have lost based on this draft, it never could have been justified.
Bears over paid but filled their consistently weak spot and probably their biggest hole. They still need a WR but maybe they have their eye on someone in the 2nd round this year. I am pretty sure someone decent will still be there.
This is looking bad for the division. The bears just made a HUGE improvement.
by MatthewDC on Apr 2, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, they blew two first-rounders, so they can't draft any new elite talent to put around him
not that I’m happy with Cutler ending up with Chicago, but now we can root for another powty meltdown!

Interesting
I’m sorta happy we didn’t execute this trade since the Bears paid a very hefty price. The downside is that the Bears have the best QB in the North now which will probably make our games against them tougher.

no way Detroit could've given up 2 first round picks
sure, they would’ve given up #20 this year but when Detroit is in the top 10 likely again next season… is it really worth it?
not really.
I would make the move if I had 2 #20 picks but not a #20 pick and a top 10 pick

Why? They have Jay Cutler's former LT already!
…they spent the 14th overall pick in 2008 on Chris Williams out of Vanderbilt.
Why sign a once-great tackle who’s missed a TON of games with injury the past few years?
by n4ry4 on Apr 2, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
2008
14 games played, Pace gave up 2 sacks at left tackle on an absolutely awful Rams team.
Williams will move to guard or right tackle (last year’s starting tackle for Chicago signed with Cleveland).

I live in Chicago
and although its a good move for the Bears to get Cutler to fill a 30 year gap in the QB position, theres one thing thats missing………RECEIVERS !!
Before this the Bears were predicted to draft Percy Harvin or one of the other top WR’s now they wont do that, they need an O line and additional help in the defensive backfield.
I like what the Lions are doing more, they are building their future the right way and not giving it up like the Bears.
Whether it be this year, next year, or 50 years from now. The Detroit Lions will eventually win a Super Bowl............I f'n hope.

But...
What about the sure-to-be-legendary Cutler/Aromashodu connection?
Just kidding, I agree 100% with what you said, and it’s the first thing I thought about when I read this news. The Bears will not be getting any young stud WRs in this draft or next year’s (at this point). So who the hell is he going to throw it to? Hester? Then who?
I see this blowing up in their faces. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking, but I really feel like it will.

So...
How well does drafting receiver in the first round work out for a team?
Are they a sure thing?
Is a first round receiver guaranteed to work out well for the team that drafts them?
by sabbath999 on Apr 3, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Wow... I also wanted him on the lions....
But 2 first rounders and a 3rd… plus a mid level starter, is just ridiculous… I think denver ended up with the best of this deal… but as a lions fan, you all know what it’s like to have been looking for years for a legitimate quarterback… and now they have one… plus signing Pace, means the O-line is better, and there are still some WR’s on the free agent market… maybe they take all that money that would’ve been spent on draft picks and take one in the 2nd and sign one, and all of a sudden this move looks brilliant… we’ll just have to see though…. If I told you, both first rounders would be busts, as most of them have been in the history of the lions… then it doesn’t seem like a bad deal at all….. I’m still deciding how I feel about it…. I live in chicago, so the bears are my local team, so I know them fairly well.

Geez...
Idt he’s worth nearly that much, I just wished we didn’t have 2 play against him 2x a year. But, that’s 1 less team looking 4 qb n the 1st round, though, if I were the Broncos I wouldn’t be content 2 sit w/ my hand pat on Orton. Idk, heard Cambell’s name thrown around, would Snyder rather have a rookie QB, cuz I’m not 2 sure why he doesn’t like JC. Didn’t they have sum good receivers? That’s an awful lot of the future 2 give up 4 1 guy, I thought the 1st pick might b a stretch, but 2…no way, you’ve been hornswaggled…lol. Good qb, no rb’s or wr’s, sounds good enough 4 me.

Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, along with a third-round pick in 2009????
WOW…..if this had happened three months ago, we’d probably be saying Chicago got a steal. But with all of the soap opera surrounding the Cutler-Denver situation, I really thought his value had decreased dramatically. It’s one thing to get a Pro-Bowl QB for that price, it’s another to get a Pro Bowl QB who gets his feelings hurt and pouts when he thinks someone has disrespected him.
Cutler’s either going to have tremendous success in Chicago or he’ll be an absolute failure. I don’t see a middle ground there for him.
The most disappointing thing about this as a Lions fan, is that it increases the likelyhood that we’ll draft Stafford.
by Ottosteve on Apr 2, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't see any "tremendous success" coming...
He’s going from:
great protection and a very good receiver duo (who wouldn’t be a ProBowler with that situation?)
to:
moderate protection and a very mediocre receiver/TE team
He’s not Tom Brady—he won’t elevate the receivers around him. Think he’s pissed & pouty now? Watch the next few years…
(I hope I’m right)
by n4ry4 on Apr 2, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
I don’t think Cutler will take the Bears to the playoffs (or at least deep into the playoffs) this season. They need to build around him and that will take at least another year. I say worry if they draft and sign well over the next season or two.

well, the can't draft well
now that they won’t have a first-round pick until 2011, and they lost their third-rounder this year. They’ll have lots of holes around their shiny new QB.

Matt Forte
Was a second rounder last year…
Greg Olsen, the best young tight end in the NFC, was a first rounder the year before.
Some hit, some miss…

Makes sense
This makes sense for both teams.
Chicago: Paid a high price, but could afford to do so. The defense is immensly more put together than the Lions and underachieved last year. Cutler is a more talented QB than the Bears have had since the 60’s, but it will be interesting to see how he fits in on the team. If they play well, he wont have a reason to pout because the Bears will have no interest in getting rid of him. If Pace can stay healthy, it will be a major upgrade to the line as Williamson can move to the RT, and this only helps Cutler who has a bit of mobility as well. They will also look to pick up a reciever in the draft of FA. If the offense gels and the defense performs to their ability, the Bears can be a legit Super Bowl contender next year.
Denver: Got premium value in a desparate situation…what else can you say.
Now that the Broncos have two #1’s, the Lions should discuss moving down with Denver so they can have their choice of QB….but I highly doubt that this will happen.

cutler
now that i see the details of the trade, chicago got screwed, or better yet, screwed themselves. the denver brass must be laughing their a$$es off!!! they got two first rounders, a decent backup, and to add insult to injury, sent their crybaby quarterback to a team with NO playmakers at any of the skill positions!!! boy, if cutler was mad in denver, wait till september rolls around!! yikes!!!
chicago should have thought that one out. they gave up two first rounders, traded away arguably their best qb, did nothing to address getting a playmaker at receiver in the offseason, and now cant get one in the draft this year or next year. orlando pace?? i think more of a move of desperation. when was the last time he played an entire season? remind anyone of a certain “iron” coach in the crescent city years back???
im glad that facing that kind of a trade, the lions said no thanks. were better off just using the draft picks we have to rebuild this team. i can say as a long time lions fan, this has been a great offseason, and im auctually optimistic that the players drafted in the inagural “post millen” era won’t get cut in next year’s training camp!!

don’t fault the guy when he hasn’t done anything wrong yet …. his trades so far have been good and we do have the right coach for a change ….if I was cutler , I wouldn’t want to come to detroit either , he sounds like a cry baby anyway hopefully we can get a good defensive end to knock him on his ass every now and then !!!!

Stop worrying about the Bears, guys. This trade forces the Lions to think defense early again. Mr. Cutler, meet Mr. Sims, Mr. Peterson, and MR. CURRY!!!!!!!! OUCH!!!!! Think about it. In 2007 when Urlock was hurt, the Lions swept the Bears. Curry will be better than Urlock his rookie year. They got an offensive QB, let’s get a defensive QB to smack him!!
