Monday Notes: New Logo, Uniforms Set to Debut Today

  • A few of you have asked about what happened to the second-round of the Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft.  Well, I realized there was no way we were going to complete it in time.  Once we got through the first-round, the sense of urgency wore off and I pretty much put it aside for other things.  Considering all of that, the second-round will not proceed beyond the previously posted No. 33 pick.  For the few picks made after No. 33, I apologize, but I'm not going to post them.  That would really make the draft look incomplete, and I am obviously leaving the Lions' second-rounder up since it already has been posted.  Now I know to start this much earlier than I did this year.
  • Don't forget that the Lions are unveiling their new logo and uniforms today at 12:30 p.m.  I expect the logo and unis to look like they do in the image below, though I wouldn't be surprised if a few minor changes have been made since the leaks from last month.

  • Cody Spencer and Chris Graham played middle linebacker for the Lions during their minicamp this past weekend.  Yeah, I think it's pretty clear that the Lions will be drafting a MLB this weekend.
  • As you can imagine, the defense is in need of upgrades at various positions.  For that reason and based on what he saw during the Lions' minicamp, Tom Kowalski thinks the Lions should focus on defense during the draft this weekend.  In fact, he wants the Lions to draft Aaron Curry, Peria Jerry/Ziggy Hood, and Louis Delmas with their first three picks.  That sounds like a good plan to me.
  • Ronald Curry could be a slot receiver for the Lions.
  • The Lions signed cornerback Pacino Horne last week.
  • Matt Millen has been hired by ESPN to be an NFL and college football analyst.  I guess ESPN has given me some free time on Monday nights, as I will not be watching Monday Night Countdown, one of the shows Millen will apparently be on.

If anyone knows of or finds a stream

to the uniform unveiling at 12:30 today, please pass it on. It would be interesting to check out.

I also will not be watching Monday night Countdown. Slap in the face to Lions fans.

damnit Millen, just take your $50 million and disappear!!

How on earth does ESPN hire the worst NFL GM in all time to provide his insights?

Is there not a single television-capable football analyst out there without the stink of eight years of total failure in building to build a respectable football team, that they have to hire Matt Millen?

This is absolutely ridiculous.

Surprisingly

I actually find Millen’s analysis quite good, better than alot of the drivel ESPN spits out

Tom Kowalski's Draft

I don’t think the Lions can afford to be so single minded. The #1 pick must be for the best long term value for the Lions. After that, go for the combination of value and need. That should skew our picks to the defensive side of the ball, especially at the defensive tackle spot and MLB. I don’t understand the fixation with a safety. A corner might provide good value at certain spots, but a safety?

I am as frustrated as any with the abysmal performance of our defence in 2008, but it is very doubtful we can fix it in a year. Especially as the defensive free agents and trades were not as impressive as our offensive pick ups.

This also points out the need to trade down from the #20 spot no matter who [Maualuga, Jerry, even Oher] is available. We need multiple picks in the second and third rounds.

Talent over need.

We need to fill MLB and possibly LT. Besides that EVERYONE should be picked because of their skills not positions. As long as its on the defensive side.

I think Killer's draft....

Is exactly that.

There is no better LB in the draft.

@#20, there is no better DT than Jerry…if not HOOD

@#33, Delhmas is THE best Safety in the draft.

Cool segements ESPN could do

How about one where they have some personnel decision and will have MIllen come out and tell everyone what he would do. Then another analyst would come out and tell the team in question should do exactly the opposite of whatever Millen just sugested. The segment would be called DDWMWD – Don’t Do What Millen Would Do.

I would also like to see a segment where they choose a Lion’s fan at random each week and have them come to the studio and kick Millen in the nuts. Maybe they could highlight one of Millen’s many GM blunders and at the end of the 30 sec clip of how it turned out, the fan would run out and kick him in the nuts. (Then you decided to use the Lion’s #1 pick, the #10 in the draft, on a overweight guy who sat out of football of any kind for a year. KICK) This segment would run for the same number of weeks that Millen was GM. I think after that I could forgive the guy.

I don't think detroit can afford...

NOT to be so single minded. The offense moved the ball last year if it wasn’t that ‘QB of the week’s first start. The defense is attrocious(SP) and spending the first day suring up the middle of the defense is an excellent strategy.

It would leave day two to the offense… Which I would be looking at Herman Johnson for LG(or if an OT or OC slips), Taylor as another DT, and the fastest SOB’s left in the draft for a KR/RB/4th WR.

As for Millen… I’m with ATL… Millen should pair up with Mel Kiper for next years draft, since that’s who Millen apparently ever listened to…. “Kiper’s picks, Millen’s Mistakes”

I am fond of the idea of a boot in the nuts…but I think ESPN should limit them to the # of losses + # of draft busts…. and maybe one steele toed boot from behind for not resigning as a grand prize.

I just hope it’ll be short lived…. like a media up roar because of something he said was taken out of context, like what happened to Rush.

I agree

with CLF, i mean our defense couldnt stop a retirement home last year and it showed against everybody. This draft i think all can say is the most important in the last decade and i believe that Mayhew and Schwartz will get it right. I mean Mayhew in just one offseason has done more and scouted more than Millen ever did. Im not saying that Mayhew is the best cause only time will tell how good this draft was

On Pacino Horne, even though he may be just camp fodder or so, this boy can hit. He’s got the ideal size and good 40 time being 4.40, but whats most impressive is this guy is physical and thats whats Schwartz wants. Lets face it if you look at it, the best talent we have is in the CB’s and its not that great.

Nice looking player.

A team(in my opinion) would win every game if there were no missed tackles and no yards after the catch on defense.

This guy tackles through the ball carrier, very nice.

At least he does

On his highlight reel.

by ATL Lion on Apr 20, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not so sure...

he looks great. He gives about a ten yard cushion on every play, which is the only reason he makes big hits is because he gains speed in the ten yards after the catch is made. Plus, he gets lucky on a few tackles as teammates are nearby. I doubt he’ll make it past training camp.

If Pacino Horne ever made it to a super bowl

and teams were back to doing individual intros, don’t you think he’d have to come out to a clip of, “Say hello to my little friend”???

I couldn't

Find Pacino Horne on DraftCountdown.com…Has he declared for the draft yet?

I know this isn't the place but...

I really think Mark Sanchez is the pick if you pick quarterback at #1 overall.

USC has recent history of pumping out quarterbacks (whether you like Leinart or not you’ve still got Cassel and Palmer)..

Pete Carroll runs a pro style offense, puts his QB in a position to win. If you pick a QB at #1, I think it needs to be Sanchez… I know it won’t happen but I believe it should.

by Boney on Apr 20, 2009 2:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for the input........

But I would be very disappointed if Detroit went with Sanchez. One year of college play does not mean a lot. I agree with Pete Carroll, Sanchez should have stayed another year to prove he is not a one shot wonder.
Basically, the USC QB tradition consists of Palmer and………well Palmer. Leinhart flashed some promise but cannot beat out Warner. Cassel has played one year. Lets see how he looks with the Chiefs. How about John David Booty?
When Carroll has as many successful QBs as Michigan has had over the last fifteen years, we can start talking about a tradition. Until then……
