A different QB scenario

With Tampa bay signing Leftwhich there need for a QB might let them pass on Freeman.   All reports out of Jets camp is than Clemens looks great and that could also lead the Jets to pass on Freeman.   The clock is ticking for Stafford to man up and sign a contract that is going to make him a very rich person, I do believe that Stafford is #1 on the Lions board, but I also think that Stafford's agent won't want to sign a contract before he's drafted giving him more leverage to avoid a hold out.   What I wonder is if a deal can't be work out and they pull the trigger with Smith, Monroe or Curry,  there is a chance Freeman could fall to us at #33.   I would like this to happen because it would give us a chance to build our O-line and Defence and not feeling pressured to put Freeman in before he's ready...

Tom Condom....(the Agent) represents both

Smith and Stafford.

Seems that might be a sign that neither of them (or only ONE of them) are really in contention for the #1 as for the contract situation that you presented in your post.

Seems to me, Monroe and Curry have a leg up as they can be bargained with a little easier.

Condom

Smith deal would be a little easier, they could use Long’s contract as a starting point, but Stafford contract will be tougher. They would have to take Ryan’s contract as a starting point but Ryan was the 3rd pick taken and that would have to be factored in the contract.

As a player...

How do you handle your agent getting a contract done with a different client?

BTW…. the Lion’s presser video is streaming footage right now…. 15 more min.

Curry

The later this week goes the more sure its between OT and Curry. I mean i know Qb is an issue and we only have a stop gap but we need somethin in which a future QB can come to and succeed. I want Curry and im biased that i’ve wanted this for a long time. If it was my choice i would agree again with CLF cause Monroe and Curry would be the pic. And as for Freeman, he wont make it to us cause guaranteed One of the top three is going to Denver, and another most likely to Tampa Bay, its questionable about seattle but you can’t believe Freeman would fall.

by Liontotheextreme on Apr 20, 2009 11:47 AM EDT reply actions

I can see Freeman falling...

Quite a bit… BUT, why would he go to NY? Sure sounds like a team has committed to him, that’s why.

by CLF on Apr 20, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree on half

I do agree the longer this goes in the week the better chance Mayhew passes on Stafford, as for Freeman if Detroit passes on Stafford that will change the thought process for a team needing Stafford Sanchez or Freeman, Freeman being the lessor of the 3 he could slip maybe…

by msivits on Apr 20, 2009 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe....

……Freeman has much more upsdie and wont cost nearly as much…..Worht the risk.

by BennieBladesFan on Apr 20, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I do not like Freeman..

I would pass on him. He needs to improve on his footwork and intermediate and long throws. He trends to put to much air on his passes. Rather than zipping them thee.

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

Freeman is raw

He might be a starter in the distant future (operative word being might) but for now, he is a project QB.

by James L on Apr 20, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

You might be right

If he were there in round 6 or 7, I wouldn’t mind taking a look at him. It all depends what else happens earlier in the draft.

by James L on Apr 20, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Freeman

Freeman is very raw, that’s the point. He could sit behind DC for a couple of years and learn with out the pressure of starting right away.

by msivits on Apr 20, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think Freeman could succeed in Detroit

I think he needs a fairly solid team behind him to be any good. Otherwise, I think he’ll just be a backup.

but remember...

Schwartz came from Tennessee. Where they built their O-line and D-line first. Then drafted a QB

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

Not really

They had McNair for years and patched around him. They only drafted VY cuz they were in position to do so at #3. They were transitioning from McNair to Young. Until this year, their line wasn’t that good. It probably never would be if they never signed Kevin Mawae.

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 20, 2009 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

My comment...

came from John Thornton DT, Tennessee

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think....

That someone like J. THornton. Might have alittle more insight to how Schwartz thinks. The comments were taken out of the Sporting News Draft Special.

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

Well....Jim Schwartz

Was the defensive coordinatior in Tennessee…..he really didn’t have much say in who they drafted or didn’t draft. Most likely all he did was give his opinion and inputs.

by KDawg on Apr 20, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually he did..

remember before Tennessee. He was a scout for Belichick

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

and the piont is

that he saw a blue-print on how to built a good team from Fisher. He will try to do the same. I am not saying that he will pick a LT. I just think that it will not be a QB with the #1.

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 1:56 PM EDT reply actions

I think that..

there was an article in the Free Press. About needing a “thumper” in the middle of the Lions defense. If you start piecing things together. It seems likely that the Lions will draft Curry.

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

why would

Lewand mention Jason Smith today. Only to get boos. Would you do that to a player you were going to draft?

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

and when the crown...

starting chanting “Curry” Lewand had a big smile on his face. Maybe I am just looking to much into that. But it is like Lewand had a big secret he wanted to tell.

by JCruize on Apr 20, 2009 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

I sure hope so

Between the poll on the Lions’ site and the chants, I’m sure they’ve gotten the message as far as who the majority of fans want to be the pick.

In the grand scheme of it all

William Clay Ford has never once given a crap about whether or not we win games…..he is a guy who wants to make sure he can fill the seats every year. If he thinks that drafting Curry will do that, you can count on the #1 pick being Curry.

by KDawg on Apr 20, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

And if you ask me

Lewand can’t keep a secret for nothing…..his body language gives it away. And if I am reading him right, the Lions will make me a happy camper this saturday when they draft Curry #1.

by KDawg on Apr 20, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Man I hope all of you are right

I really think that if we can have Sims, Curry, and Peterson at the LB position for the next couple years I will think twice about picking up the opposing teams RB, QB, and WR for the week in my fantasy leagues.

by qbdoyle1 on Apr 20, 2009 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

This will all be over on Saturday

we can finally put it all to rest and just watch the draft a scream at the T.V. : )

by msivits on Apr 20, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

WCF is all about the $$$$$$$$$$$

He will meddle and make Mayhew/Lewand/Harris/ Schwartz draft Stafford just for the jersey sales alone. He doesn’t give a damn if the Lions win or lose, he just wants money

by JazzyBBP on Apr 20, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry, that makes no sense to me Jazzy

WCF is loaded already. Jersey sales are chump change to him. And Stafford is the most expensive guy he could draft. Why wouldn’t he insist on a cheap option?

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 20, 2009 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

immediate return

Metro Detroit has a population of around 4 million. He drafts a shiny new QB, he’ll sell at least 1 million jerseys at a $100 each.(I’m basing that on the Harrington sales, which were well over a mil.) That big fat bonus he gives Stafford is paid and then some. QBs sell the most jerseys.

.

by JazzyBBP on Apr 20, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Doubt it

Considering most people don’t want Stafford, I doubt jersey sales will go that well. Considering they’re new, why wouldn’t someone buy a Calvin Johnson jersey, for example, instead.

They sold a million Joey Jerseys?

If that’s true, where are they now? Maybe fans stitched on a 4 and made out that they were Kevin Jones fans?

Come on there are not one million NFL fans in the whole state of Michigan that own jerseys.

Do you guys have closets full of jerseys? Those things are freakin’ expensive.

by NorthLeft12 on Apr 20, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

i bought a harrington jersey

cant remember where it is now, i think good will lol

NFL-Lions,Vikings,Texans,Bills
MLB-Rays,Twins,Marlins,Reds
NBA-T-Wolves,Cavliiers,Warriors,Bobcats
NHL-Wild,Penguins
NCAA-Gophers,Gators,Longhorns,Fighting Irish

by RaysOfHope on Apr 20, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm tellin' ya

it’s gonna be a QB. WCF has been searching for a QB forever. He forced Millen to draft Joey. It’s pretty well known Millen wanted to pick Jammer, WCF nixed that. He’s going to force the new regime to pick Stafford. WCF is obsessed with the Kiper-like face of the franchise bs for the marketability.
I want Curry, Raji, or Monroe. I’ve got a bad, bad feeling about Stafford if he comes here, yet I feel he might whip the Lions asses if they don’t draft him. Kinda torn on him. lol

by JazzyBBP on Apr 20, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Dont like it

I dont really like Freeman as a QB. Hes overrated and i dont think is worth our #33 pick.
