Lions general manager Martin Mayhew says the chances are very good Detroit will have a deal done with the No. 1 pick before the NFL draft begins Saturday.
Mayhew declined to say much else during a news conference Tuesday. The Lions have taken great pride in staying quiet about their plans.
"I hope nobody expects me to say anything earth-shattering," Mayhew said in his opening comments.

Was this the Pre-Draft presser
LeapinLion mentioned in his “Doubt” fanpost?

I'm not sure....
But Killer has a great transcript on MLive that goes through the whole thing.
Smoke and mirrors, basically….
I still think that Meyhew is trying to soften the blow of a Curry pick to the national audience.
….. I just don’t understand how you can sign a #1 QB with out a team to support him.

Stafford is worth the #1 Pick
He is only 21 years old. They have time to build the team around him. The offence has some good parts already, the defence will get the attention it needs from later in the draft and from the much improved coaching staff.

Come NorthLeft12, give it up....
If you like Stafford just say so, but don’t try to use reason in your argument. Your theory that the defense can be ignored every year and somehow a young QB with no protection will be able to turn things around is just nuts. Get some good defensive players and get a QB next year. Did you or did you not see the Lions go down by 14-21 points almost every game last year. How the hell is a 21 year old QB going to fix that from his back? Good Lord.

Yeah, lets draft a lousy QB next year.
Wait, we already have a few of those.
I said I think that Stafford is the best option for our #1 pick. I think he will be a very good NFL QB for a long time.
We can fix the defence. Schwartz is fixing the defence as we speak. They are upgrading the talent base. They will scheme better. They will coach better. And yes we will draft some impact players this year and next to make our defence even better.
If you watched most of the Lions games last year you would have noticed that Orlovsky got sacked a lot less than Daunte and Kitna. If Orlovsky was our QB all year, the Lions would have given up around 30 sacks. About middle of the league. Stafford will not get sacked anywhere near as much as Daunte and Kitna. And not because he is more mobile. Because he will make quicker reads and release the ball quicker. I Daunte does not improve he will be sacked out of Detroit.

Lousy QB....
this year, or next year… I disagree with both Ideas.

First post!
I’ve been a dedicated follower of POD for some time now. I think the anxiety of this years draft and the “smoke and mirrors” is getting to all of us. I have faith in Shwartz and Mayhew. Lets just hope that come Saturday, (whomever the pick is), is going to be a day where we can look back and talk to our kids about the draft that began the Detroit Lions franchise transformation into a winning team and not the joke of the NFL.

Curry willing to take way less to be TOP pick
hope this doesn’t get into the Mario Williams and Reggie Bush thing, where Mario Williams took the deal before DRAFT DAY! Reggie Bush became the #2 pick and lost about maybe $5 million, to me, I like Aaron Curry is smart in making more money than the being the #3 pick so if Stafford won’t sign wow, he can drop from #1 to #4 or #8 or #10? Stafford do the smart thing and sign before draft day and get your $30 million, not being the #1 pick can lose you between 10-15 million guaranteed!
