Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Why Pat White is more valuable than Stafford

OK ... setting everything ESPN has shoved down our throats aside for a second lets take a look at this.  If the Lions pick Stafford we are stuck with a gigantic contract for a QB, who by most accounts isnt a #1 lock.

The Lions should keep it simple and go after a "relatively" cheap Curry or a solid LT in Smith or Monroe.  All three of these players are guaranteed to be at least solid for years to come.

I love the Lions but thier QB history is absolutely horrible.  Something funny happens to QBs who put on that blue and silver. Putting anyone back there that isnt 100% ready for it is a complete mistake.

That being said, Pat White could be picked up in the 3rd round.  He may not be the next Lion QB to bring us to the brink but he will bring an extremely exciting slot reciever and kickoff specialist who could take a few snaps to see how he works.  If it doesnt work out as a QB, you have a much smaller contract to deal with, and he still a playmaker who can be used immediately.  I think it is safe to say that no matter what the Lions do this year we will be looking at another Top 10 pick in 2010.  The next draft class of QBs will be much stronger and far less risky.

Just a thought ... new to the board ... great to be here ... Go Lions!!!!!!

Welcome IowaLion

Nice post!!!!! I understand this logic and agree completely. There are a lot of fans who want Stafford here, and to me, it’s a sign that these poor fans have been deprived of a decent QB their whole lives, and are desperate for a QB. I agree with either Curry or Smith at #1, but I think that White has a better chance at receiver or kick returner. The Lions aren’t going anywhere this year, so let’s not kid ourselves. We can get a QB with next years draft. We need a cornerstone pick this year, and there are too many uncertainties with Stafford. I certainly mean no disrespect to Stafford fans, but I want a safe pick for a change. Again, welcome aboard, IowaLion, and thanks for the post.

Are you calling

Pat White a safe pick? I haven’t seen so much question marks since the last time Millen took a football IQ test.

by detpistons3 on Apr 23, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

NO NO NO

I am probably the biggest Anti- Pat White guy in here. I will give you credit. You said slot receiver and NOT future QB. But, the Lions cannot waste a pick on a project KR/PR/WR. Can not waste a 3rd round.

by JCruize on Apr 22, 2009 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

Nope

I beat you out for that and for no specific reason – Pat White is a waste of a pick for us.

If you want a return man, get a return man. All these hybrid players are just spreading their skillsets out during college, making themselves less effective in both games.

Pat White is the next Troy Smith.

I am glad to

have more Anti Pat White backers though. It seems that White is the flavor of the draft. There might be a pun in there.

by JCruize on Apr 22, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

With good reason

I find it hard to think that a guy like Pat White with all his speed, vision, and athletic ability could be a complete bust. At the very least you end up with some high end speed on the same side of the ball as CJ.

PS … thanks for the welcome.

I can't say I'm anti-Pat White

but I am anti-Pat White going to the Lions. I hope the kid has a great career. I just can’t see him being anything but another Kordell Stewart. He may have a little more versatility than Slash as far as what positions he could move around to, but he would never make it in Linehan’s Offense. Exciting player, just not right for the Lions.

by James L on Apr 22, 2009 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh for sure

That’s what I meant – I hope he goes to Miami so he can do that Wildcat shit – He’s perfect for it

by Nate D. on Apr 22, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

without a doubt

He is a great kid. And a great athlete. But not what the Lions need. And to draft someone like him in the third. When the Lions could be filling needs on the D-Line or O-Line would just be a waste.

weird feeling

I just have a creepy feeling about this kid (Stafford). Everyone outside Detroit thinks he is the obvious choice but looking to next year QB class just seems to make so much more sense right now.

If the Lions dont go for Stafford, will they try any other QB? If they dont Stanton is just sitting there wait for Culpepper to slip getting out of the shower or some other godforsaken travesty to strike at the Lions.

by IowaLion on Apr 22, 2009 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions

my take is..

draft Stafford or dont draft a QB at all. It does no good to have a “project” QB. They rarely pan out into anything.

by JCruize on Apr 23, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I think

if the Lions don’t draft Stafford, the only place they might look for a QB would be in the last 2 rounds. Some project QB that slipped down out of rounds 4 or 5. When the Lions get to those last 3 picks, they’re going to be picking guys for depth. Maybe they get lucky and they push the starters a little bit. Maybe not.

by James L on Apr 23, 2009 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

An that projects name should be Rhett Bomar

by Curse of Bobby Layne 50 Years Strong on Apr 23, 2009 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Like I said

Only if it’s in rounds 6 or 7. I can live with that.

by James L on Apr 23, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Rhett would

be okay with me in the 6th or 7th. But he will probably go in the late third or early 4th.

Welcome, and keep the ideas flowing!

Just a thought

Does anyone know if the Lions retain the rights to Caleb Campbell, the safety we drafted in the 7th round last year?

by alleycat36m on Apr 23, 2009 12:03 AM EDT reply actions

No pretty sure he goes back into the draft pool this year,

by Curse of Bobby Layne 50 Years Strong on Apr 23, 2009 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

I think I read recently

that he’ll be eligible to re-enter the draft after his service is up.

by James L on Apr 23, 2009 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

That pick was BS

Don’t get me wrong, good player in the 7th round. At first the Army was going to let him get drafted and play, then NOPE. The Lions got screwed and should’ve gotten an extra compensatory pick this year for him

by JazzyBBP on Apr 23, 2009 12:56 AM EDT up reply actions

As an ex army man

Fuck the army. They probably told him all kinds of shit up and down about him playing in the NFL and then pulled the rug out from under him with some fine print contractual crap.

Ugh

by Nate D. on Apr 23, 2009 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

If you remember correctly he was suppose to be allowed to play and just do two years of recruiting duty and then do his actually service unless he had made it as a starter, then he could buy out of his contract at that time.

by Curse of Bobby Layne 50 Years Strong on Apr 23, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Mayhew said they aren't going to re-sign him

So he technically enters back into the draft pool.

I believe

He’s going back into the draft pool this year, but he won’t be eligible to play for another year, so not much chance we’re getting Caleb Campbell back.

by detpistons3 on Apr 23, 2009 4:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Go all or go nothing

I can’t for a second think taking White would be an option at QB. Maybe if we had a defense or O-line that could last a season, but White is a wild cat player and we don’t have the team to surround him that he needs. Stafford has the brain, arm, and mentality we need for a QB, might not be the pick we need, but Stafford is that once and franchise QB you risk on… Pick your poison on the first pick, Stafford has the best upside if he turns our right…

by msivits on Apr 23, 2009 1:55 AM EDT reply actions

i agree

Take Stafford at one. Or dont take a QB at all

by JCruize on Apr 23, 2009 2:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Go with Stafford or no one. I don’t see White, Bomar or Freeman will be worth the pick for the Lions. Bomar might have talent but he needs coaching, Freeman is also a project which we don’t need, and while White is versatile, he doesn’t seem to have a true position.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

by Hyperion Ecta on Apr 23, 2009 2:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree

And I’m glad to see there’s another Lions fan in Iowa besides me. But I think we should take Curry this year and pick up a qb next year that will have more pieces surrounding him to help him succeed. Even with a phenomenal draft this year, I think 5 wins would be a huge leap forward and we’ll still be picking fairly early in next year’s much deeper draft.

by MP hawkfan on Apr 23, 2009 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

White is a project...

With Stanton and Henson on the roster, do we really need to waste another draft pick on a guy that may or may not work out? Most analysts aren’t sold on what NFL position he translates to. I personally think he should be drafted as a QB and given a chance to succeed. If Detroit drafts him though, he becomes buried on a depth chart of project guys and the Lions still don’t have a decent long-term prospect.

Bottom line with White is that you just don’t know what you’re gonna get. Stafford’s a much safer bet. Let’s go with a guy we know is at least right for the QB position. No more pet project quarterbacks!
