Stafford goes #1, who should #20 be?????

With in the next 24 hours we can probably expect the signing of Matthew Stafford.   The question is who do we draft next?   The fun part of this we won't know until the draft unfolds, but I have a few ideas...

I should say defence comes first at all costs but that depends who's there, and if by some chance Oher drops to us at #20 Mayhew will have to bite his lip and draft another offensive player.   Oher could start out at LG helping Backus out year one, and then move to LT moving Backus inside year two when Stafford takes over fulltime.    Now if Oher is not there I wonder what Mayhew will do, I would think next would be MLB like Maualuga or Laurinaitis.   But I think it would be better drafting a CB with #20 like D.J. Moore, Darius Butler or Alphonso Smith heres why.  I know we have a giant hole at MLB and it has to be filled, but the same could be said about our secondary.   I know we signed some FA help also by trade but I believe Henry will be a one and done player for us.   J.P. and Sims are side line to side line players, all we need is a in the box tackling machine like Darry Beckwith, Scott Mckillop, Jasper Brinkley or Stanely Arnoux "for those who don't know that's the other LB who plays at Wake Forrest"  all of these players should be avaible 3rd round and beyound and who could start for us at Week 1.   The CB's that start coming off the board in round 3 and beyound could one day be starters but most likely not Week 1 impact players like the LB could be...   For me the real fun will start with pick #20 for us.......

Michael Oher...

or Rey Maualuga if available, if not I would take best defensive player on the board and then select a lineman with 33. Detroit has enough needs that they should be reaching for players…I also wouldnt be surprised to see this pick traded

right on

This is exactly what I was going to type. Thanks for saving me the effort. I’d hope for Duke Robinson at 33. Honestly, the only difference between Maualuga and Curry is that Curry is a half step faster. They were both SUPER productive in college.

Maualuga has issues

Curry is a class act – Maualuga (don’t get me wrong, I’d like to see him here) has had some behavioral and off the field issues in the past, along with somewhat spotty play on a stellar D… I say he’s a touch overrated, but I also think SD is going to take him.

Maualuga

Isn’t as smart as Curry he scored low on the Wonderlic and MLB is a position where smarts is important

Off topic

But my girlfriend says she wants to know a whole lot more about the Wonderlic.

Most sites (I go to www.profootballweekly.com) will give you the players wonderlic scores, so that’ll give you (or her) a decent idea.

Good choices. I don’t know if Oher will still be on the board and would settle for Beatty if Maualuga is also gone (unless Perry is still there). hehe. Lot’s of choices, just get good, productive, help. That’s all we can ask.

It has to be Defense.....

…..You can get a solid guard in 3rd round to help with Backus…..Hood or Jerry at DT or Ayers or MAybin at de……I think Malageuga would be perfect fit with Perterson and Sims flying on the outside…..You can alos get a solid big DT in the 3rd round…..

1.1 Stafford
1.20 Malaguega
2.1 Mack or Robinson
3.1 Maola or Marks DT from usc and Auburn
3.20 Maola or Marks DT from usc and Auburn

I agree with this one

and if no Malaudannga, then Lauranitis. Assuming that one makes it. We’ll see.

by WBL on Apr 23, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Laurinaitis

Please, please let it be him. He is a more complete MLB than Maualuga and would make our LB corps one of the scariest in the league.

by AZ Yooper on Apr 23, 2009 6:30 PM EDT reply actions

Laurinitis

Makes sense @ 20… no one would even consider that a reach. Not to mention that you can get your OL @ 33 – Unger, who played LT for 2 years @ Oregon, along with 2 at center.

I think Laurinitis is a good pick at 33 but...

not at 20, I do agree that an interior lineman in the 3rd could be good.

by thePROD1GY on Apr 23, 2009 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

Peria Jerry is a TAMPA 2 DT...

He will NOT be taken by Detroit at 20, plus he will be like 25 years old

by thePROD1GY on Apr 23, 2009 6:33 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think his age is a problem at all

If a first-round pick is a solid defensive tackle for nine years instead of eleven years, he’s still a long-term success

Laurinaitis will be a bust!…GO BLUE!!

I like the Laurinaitis pick

despite the fact that he is a godforsaken Buckeye. Just look the linebackers to come out of OSU recently and do I have to remind everyone that Chris Spielman was at one time a Buckeye?

And

he kinda reminds me of Spielman who turned out pretty well. But still… F-ing buckeyes. Feh.

I really wonder if his agent really is trying to get every drop of blood from WCF… freakin vampire

Last year....

Stafford’s agent, who is also the agent for Matt Ryan, got him a better deal at pick #3 with the Falcons, than was being offered to him by Miami. Do not count Curry out just yet. I have my dounts that the Lions can sign Stafford unless they pay him more than they want to.

Utah – Massive frame for a DB… I think Miami is gonna take him, but there’s always Mays next year…. :D

Overview from PFW
Has shown big-time flashes as a senior, but too often looks content going through the motions and playing down to his competition. Has the feet to play left tackle, athleticism and clear starter potential. However, could break a team’s heart once he’s thrown into the NFL trenches if he does not learn to play with more gusto. The million-dollar question is whether he has enough toughness, mental fortitude and the temperament needed to survive in the NFL. Fits best in a zone blocking scheme and will climb up draft boards similar to the way Duane Brown (Texans, 2008) did.

Is that

to big of a risk at 33?

by CR on Apr 23, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, not necessarily, but here's my guy's report (Unger)
A naturally athletic, extremely versatile five-position player with Pro Bowl potential, Unger has shown the foot quickness and athletic ability to contribute on the edges and enough core functional strength to remain inside at the next level. Grades out as a second-round talent but could warrant interest late in the first round because of the increased value of his great versatility.

Is easily available @ 33, and is the versatile talent the Schwartz has claimed to be looking for.

You've been against Beatty for a while now

But I can’t recall your reasoning, could you maybe elaborate, or link me to some previous reasoning of yours. Personally, I like Beatty as a LT option, I’d have him over Britton or Loadholt.

Beatty

Pro football draft, Pro football weekly, Pro football 09draft preview and Sporting News Draft 09. Basically all say the same thing, He’s very fluid, effortless and looks the part… But all question his temperament and attitude to succeed at the position. I see a alot of Backus in Beatty and that scares me. If we were a pass first team I’d be all for it, but in a ground and pound team your LT has to be nasty, all 4 mags don’t see that in Beatty…

by msivits on Apr 23, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

I see your reasoning, I still would take him over Britton or Loadholt though.

My guess is Britton goes to the Viks in the 1st, whether or not he deserves it… Loadholt is at best a 2nd rounder.

I see Britton as a RT

Plus, like Nate said, he will most likely go to the Vikes, unless we take with #20 (hope not).

Backus = Beatty ???? Really?

Backus came out of college as a mauler, blue collar, reliable, nasty, LT with not a lot of upside. Beatty is a finesse type, technician, very athletic, a little passive, LT with a lot of room for growth physically [weight and strength] . They are projecting him to have a lot of upside.

We pretty much got what they said for Backus. I would be happy if they took Beatty and with some good coaching and training we may have ourselves a high quality LT.

If Oher falls, take him..

If not, look at defence. Maualuga, or a good corner. I also like Laurinaitis but I would prefer him at #33.
