Stafford a "done deal" (will go #1, contract or not.)
MLive.com and Bleacher Report.com are reporting that the Lions are selecting Matthew Stafford as the #1 pick in Saturdays draft.
NFL.com’s Thomas George was told by a source in the Detroit Lions organization that they select Stafford regardless of whether a deal is in place by the beginning of the draft Saturday at 4 p.m
I can't verify this through any official reports but, for the most part, MLIVE and Bleacher Report are pretty reliable. I expected this and it looks like it's becoming close to official. Simon Wilcott on the NFL network is in Detroit and says that the guaranteed money has been agreed to but how it gets paid out is not. Lions want 3-4 years, Stafford (Condon) want it in two years. Everything should be finalized, or close to it, by draft time tomorrow, if not sooner. Welcome to Detroit, Matthew.

I'm with ya Bennie
After all the good moves so far … the three trades … a couple solid free agent pick ups … and the apparent busting of Stafford’s balls by coming out saying they had agreed to terms with Curry … I wouldnt be at all surprised if these guys had a couple more tricks up their sleeves.

Neither would I but
as much as I wanted them to draft Curry, I’ve thought for a long time that Stafford would be the guy. He’s had the most visits and workouts for the Lions than anyone and they really do need a quarterback. I haven’t seen official announcement yet but I felt reasonably comfortable posting that it’s close to being done given the sources.
I’ll owe you a beer, DL

Hard to believe
I find it hard to believe Mayhew would want to start his GM tenure off as being known as a wishy washy GM when it comes to negotiations. I can’t believe “reliable” sources on his one. They have made some good choices to mud this one up. No matter which way they go. I have got to believe if it was that close, everyone would be reporting this.

Keep the faith
Hope tommarrow brings good news for the new GM. He will take Curry or have a sweetheart deal done for Stafford. Otherwise he starts to look more like Millen.

Man
Can’t believe they would take him. With so many needs they are wasting the 1st overall pick and most likely putting the team back another 10 years. We are already playing in the 70’s. It gets worse from here out. I keep the faith and constantly get disappointed

Hang in there P
I’m right there with you, but at least Stafford is the best QB in this years draft (I’m trying to be optimistic). Let’s all hope that he sheds the ghosts of Chuck Long, Andre Ware, and Joey boy. I’m now looking for them to do the right thing and get him some protection and an ILB with 20 and 33. I’ve officially had enough Kool-Aid. Go Lions!!!
