Lions Turn Down Trade Offer from Chiefs

I guess the Chiefs really don't want to use their No. 3 overall pick:

The Chiefs are apparently trying hard to move down from the number three spot. I'm hearing they offered the Lions that pick plus a fourth-round choice in return for Detroit's other first-rounder (#20) and Detroit's second-rounder (#33).

The Lions turned down the deal, obviously not wanting to hand out another gigantic contract.  Had they accepted, they could have picked Aaron Curry or even Jason Smith.  It sounds like the Rams are trying to trade their No. 2 overall pick, and if a deal happens, Mark Sanchez will be off the board.

Good move

I remember a few posts saying how the Lions could """have their cake and eat it too"" But people forget about the money I guess when they say that (funny cuz of all teh talk about Stafford’s contract now)

Its essentially 2 first round picks cuz #33 is as close as it gets, and they do get a 4th rounder out of it so it isn’t a horrible idea.

But to teh #3 overall pick, they’d have to pay around $30+ more million to another guy, probably Jason Smith or Monro. Yea, it solves 2 needs. But that’s $70+ million into 2 players, albeit the 2 most important players on the team.

If a player we want slips to 10 or so, though

I definitely don’t want the Lions to be afraid to trade up. As much as we need bodies, we need really, really good players even more.

Still in there

If Mayhew negotiates like he says he does, then he has plenty of time to wait for a better offer, especially if the Chiefs are aggressively trying to move down as indicated.

The fact that it is 2 picks for 2 picks makes me think we can at least entertain it.

Even if it is 2 high contracts, as long as we are below the total rookie cap we should be fine. We had a ton of toal cap space to start with anyways.

We are not losing picks with this deal, so getting Smith or Curry and a 4th round guy we like instead of 20 and 33 is perfectly fine in my book,

Assuming we went MLB/DT with our next two picks, would you rather have...

1. Maualuga/Laurinaitis + Hood/Brace

OR

2. Curry + Moala

Seems like that’s what we’d be looking at with #3 instead of #20 + #33

They're high

There is FAR more value in #20 and #33 than in #3 and a fourth. I don’t even see that as a question.
