Lions Draft Louis Delmas with 33rd Pick
With the 33rd pick of the NFL Draft -- the first pick of the second-round -- the Lions just selected Western Michigan safety Louis Delmas. Even though Rey Maualuga was there, the Lions opted to pick up the best safety in the draft. I think the next few picks will address the needs on defense, but one has to wonder what happened to Maualuga. Not only are the Lions passing on him, but other teams are as well. James Laurinaitis was just the first true inside linebacker drafted, so obviously there is some red flag with Maualuga we don't know about.
I'm not a huge fan of this pick, but it's becoming evident that there is something wrong with Maualuga. Considering that, I understand this pick. Delmas is the best safety in the draft, and the Lions obviously don't have a whole lot of faith in any of their current safeties. Even with that being said, I don't know if safety was the first position that should have been addressed on defense. Regardless, the Lions are staying true to their promise of drafting talent over need.

Defense
will be addressed. Every take a step back and take a breath…we’re doing fine. Remember, this draft is not that deep anyway. Obviously, Rey isn’t impressing the Lions….along with James L.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!

Great Spin Job
Just as I was making my peace with the Stafford Contract and trying to withhold judgement on Mayhew until the next pick they went and took a tight end. As Rey began to slip, and I started assessing what teams were left to pick I began to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Was it really possible that the MLB we all hoped for was actually going to fall in our laps with the first pick of the second round? My hand was literally in the air in a triumphant pose when Rey was still sitting there at 33! Then reality set in, and I realized that this is the EXACT same organization, with the EXACT same scouts, and Millen himself might as well be hiding under the table in the war room slipping his picks to Mayhew. AWEFUL!!!

I’m fine with not taking Rey, but Delmas? Sean, you said he is the best safety in the draft, but it seems that not many others think so. How do you figure he is, and aren’t you concerned about his size? He was able to hit like that in the MAC, but in the NFL?
I haven’t liked any of the picks so far, they have been very Millenisque.

I think the Lions are building long term just like they said they would.
Best QB-TE-S in the draft .They said they all would have to agree on the picks so by the way they drafted I guess they’re confident they will be around for the long haul. I just have to wait and see how the team utilizes the picks. Maybe they wanted a starter in every round and feel a 3rd rnd DT & LB has a better chance of starting then a 3rd rnd TE & S
I’m in my wait and see mode now. I hope I like what I see. Go Lions!

So Stafford was the No. 1 rated talent on the majority of boards? On anybody’s board but the Lions?

although....
i would have liked to seen an ILB, you cant argue with the fact that we have the top QB, the top TE and the top S in the draft.
I am just wondering who they have in mind for ILB. Who else have the Lions looked at? Anyone know?

DT hopefully
Well I would imagine it’s going to be a defensive pick, something up front, like a DT, couldn’t tell you who though, the Lions have definitely been unpredictable so far.

Grade so far F
If you had replaced the front office in 2000 with a group of retarded monkeys there is a 100% chance they would have done better this decade. You hire a defensive coach and then tie up all funds in the salary cap picking about the 15th best player with the number one pick. Pick offense with #20 where a tight end just as good would have been there for their 2nd round pick. Then they draft this little guy for a safety? If you hold your elbows at your waste and raise your hands you are imitating the Lions defensive backfield. I really thought they might finally show a little bit of sense. Swartz said they all had to agree on every pick so that means THE WHOLE FRONT OFFICE IS A BUNCH OF IDIOTS. The only thing they did was get rid of the head idiot Millen and left his clones behind. God help the Lions fan.

I gotta say I'm impressed...
with the Lions taking two, arguably three of the best players at their positions. I expected them to take Oher to guard their 41 million dollar investment, but they took the best TE in the draft, and I was very surprised with their pick of Delmas, the best S in the draft. I really thought we were gonna fall into the hype of Mauluaga (spelling?) and Laurinitis (spelling?), but I was extremely glad they passed and got secondary help which we desperately need. Maybe we’ll get 2 interceptions this year!!

Im surprised at this
but these guys were not bad picks.
Yea the need other things, but they other needs that were available none were the best players at their positions. Pettirgrew is a great pick. Him, Stafford and Megatron will be a great nucleus of skill players.
Delams is the best saftey on the board and could be the Bob Sanders in Detroit.

Yea...
I go to Western and Delmas is the man. He is a hard hitter and a game changer on the defensive side of the ball. He can cover one on one and he can blitz with the best of them. I would have liked to see Maualuga but Delmas is a good pick. I bet New England would have taken him at 34 if we didn’t take him.

im not sold but im not ticked off either...
im not sure if its the complete ineptitude of the past decade has gotten us used to terrible drafts thatwe dont see this one may have some positive sides.I mean we did get the best QB in the draft (not my personal choice im a tebow guy) so were told, we got the best TE in the draft( a stretch at twenty but solid)and a big hitter in a small package(once again not my choice but if he can take the punishment could be good pick) . Let me say im more of a defensive guy I would have gone Curry, first and foremost, then if you looking for helpup front , or Jerry to stuff the run,or Davis to help cover someone, that leaves the third pick for possibly T Britton or Alphoso Smith . But all is not lost but maybe its time to help that o-line now that they have thier QB lets try to protect him maybe give him a chance to suceed how about G Duke Robinson or Cadagon to play Tackle, or Kruger depending on DE ’s that are or thier draft boards! To get my point across OK now we have Stafford so lets try to keep him alive before he gets beat to a pulp…remember we will still end up top 5 again next year

Grade for second day B but overall still a D or D+
The rest of the draft was ruined before it started by paying Stafford so much. It is just too much of a risk tying up 41 million for a maybe maybe not guy. If Stafford doesn’t pan out (and Lions history says he wont) you have ruined your chances by tying up salary cap money. It was way too risky. If somehow Stafford became a pro-bowl quarterback the grade for this draft would go up to b+ because they got some value late. When you are as bad as the Lions you try to be a little safe and get better before you take big risks. Even fools get lucky once in a while so I hope this is that time for that fool Mayhew.
