Yeah as i was saying
Rey Rey was #11 on scout.coms overall big board
Man, that got really slow at the end.
Go Lions. Take Ray Maualuga!
"A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five." ~Groucho Marx
i love our draft now
The Pettigrew pick looks genius now with Ray Maualaga falling this far.
Yep.
I’ve been trying here. This one is hard to accept.
Was it?
Lets take a run down on the mentality….
1st pick- Best QB in the draft
2nd pick- Best TE in the draft
3rd pick- Best Safety in the draft
As long as they are taking the “Best” player available at that position… Its fine with me.
He might've been the best in the draft
But this is also regarded as a weak safety class.
Safety from Western Michigan
Supposedly not very intelligent
Pride of Detroit, SB Nation's Lions Blog
Okay
Maualuga obviously is missing a bone or a nerve that allows him to play football because no way we pass on him twice
Once again, I'm sick
They’ve passed twice on Maualuga now?
by Ian Casselberry on Apr 25, 2009 7:36 PM EDT reply actions
Pats passed on Maualuga twice
There’s something that teams don’t want. If he falls to 65th I still woudln’t want him
Must have a LB and DT targeted in 3rd round
by Runnin' Rebel on Apr 25, 2009 7:37 PM EDT reply actions
Well you cant blame value, #1 QB, TE, and S
by Liontotheextreme on Apr 25, 2009 7:38 PM EDT reply actions
Here comes the defense run
All those teams that picked offense last round are going D so say goodbye to the solid D players
True
Then in the 3rd rd all the special teamers will be gone so say goodbye to all the Long Snappers and punters we wanted
I acutally love it...
Best defensive player available. Obviously, ReyMa has some serious issues to fall this far. Delmas addresses our definite need in the secondary. The obvious thinking is that there are MLBs good enough to wait for in the third round.
I think they are torn between the two MLB
I wonder if they will wait for one to get taken and then trade up with their third. Makes sense to just wait until one goes off the board
Matt Stafford better not start till 2010
and you guys actually put some money into the offensive line. How could you pass on Oher?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laydODN6xVk
Disappointed...
…in the fans here. If you guys had done any research, you’d know that Louis Delmas is a solid safety that will do great for us. I can’t even begin to explain how many of you were saying you can get a solid LB at any point in the first three or four rounds. C’mon. They’ve had a solid draft so far.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
Why delmas it makes no sense
Most likely Henry will be starting at safety
Alright guys, have a good night...
I hate it but only time will tell.
by damnitdamnitdamnit on Apr 25, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions
I see the reason and thats because VALUE, number 1 at all three positions
by Liontotheextreme on Apr 25, 2009 7:42 PM EDT reply actions
I don't want Maualuga anymore
That being said Delmas is a good pick. Best safety prospect in this draft and he’s a real hard hitler. God pick from Mayhew
Here is what I am going to say..
This draft is so off the wall crazy, it must be genius… theres no way Mayhem would make this many mistakes when the fans are already so crazy..
It must be genius at work.. in 5 years we are gonna probably want to have his babies
lol
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
by Hyperion Ecta on Apr 25, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I'll take a different approach here...
Instead of taking the chic picks, they are – for once – taking the best players on their boards. Maybe pissing off the fans finally means they are getting the right players for a change. Makes sense to me.
Yeah, Delmas was rated high on a lot of boards.. and is definitely the best at his position
They said they would select talent and best player over need…
So I think that is what they are doing
I'll go along with that and give the benefit of the doubt
…as long as we get a DT or MLB in round 3 (or sooner)
I don't know what is happening
Why are we not addressing huge gaps or weaknessses
TE and S
are huge gaps. We can still address LB and DE. Maybe the options just aren’t as solid as we think.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
he already said hes staying at OLB where he was drafted

No matter how good Pettigrew is
or Delmas is, the fact is, we have giant holes in our roster they’ve utterly failed to fill.
haven't filled yet

UTTERLY
Great, so we’re going to not only have an unproven player @ MLB, but an unproven player who couldn’t shine in college. Fucking fantastic
they are taking the best players available regardless of position
When angry, count four; when very angry, swear. ~Mark Twain, Pudd'nhead Wilson, 1894
Still confused
Why haven’t we touched MLB or O-line yet. I like the taking best players available at each position, but it’s still interesting to see what the hell we’re going to do to not get our qb’s smoked and give up crap tons of rushing yards at this point.
Why..
why get a guy just because we NEED that position. If the player isn’t good enough to be a starter, whats the point?
Get a player you think will be a good starter for you, not a player thats simply better than what you already have just to improve a little.
Schwartz will run a 5-2 Defense this year. Does he have a choice?
by Runnin' Rebel on Apr 25, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions
I have not been high on Mayhew
I was giving him the benefit of the doubt because of the Roy Williams trade. But after this draft I am going back to being depressed that we have a guy who calls Millen for advice.
We have a pretty big hole at MLB. We don’t even sniff around a MLB in free agency and now we are waititng for the 3rd round (maybe) for one in the draft?
Why Delmas
Does it make any sense. Is this ford looking for a michigan guy?
Because our starting FS
Is Gerald Alexander, a guy coming off an injury that brass obviously believes is not ready to come in and start
Broncos give up their first-rounder for a second-round pick?
That’s dumb.
Pride of Detroit, SB Nation's Lions Blog
Just because...
we have guys that “can” start at certain positions doesn’t make them good.
Delmas has huge upside, more than Rey.
While we probably could've done better
i think there’s been worse moves made today- DHB at #7, Green bay giving up the farm for Clay Matthews, this new Broncos trade
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
Now Al Davis actually looks smart
Darrius Heyward-Bey looks like a safe pick after all these draft happenings
for those who know
how solid is uconns beatty? do we trade up for him?

I'm glad you enjoy Eisen
As much as I do – seeing the gamut of analysts, he consistently provides engaging conversation, and he’s damn funny too.

I'm really curious as to how Reyma fell this far?
Obviously the teams knew something the general public and media didn’t
both MLB available to us at both #20, and #33
and we didnt take one…wow
When angry, count four; when very angry, swear. ~Mark Twain, Pudd'nhead Wilson, 1894
all we need
is a guy to help close the middle and defend the pass. We could find him in later rounds. We have too many holes to be absolutely solid at LB
yep

we just get our info from the analyst on TV or youtube clips...

It's a Long-Term Plan...
It’s simple… draft the best player at a position you need.
Stafford.. .best QB
Pettigrew… best TE
Delmas… best S
Stafford.. .best QB
Pettigrew… best TE
Delmas… best S3 guys we think can be starters longterm. Why take the 8th best OL, or 4th LB just because we need one?

I know we were rebuilding but...
What were doing is tearing out the foundation and starting over from scratch
Looks like they can do both of their picks within the second time frame
Because they have both picks back to back?
Weird.

two great picks by NE
"A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five." ~Groucho Marx
I've liked NE
Since before they were cocky. I don’t mind NE doing well since they don’t play the Lions more than once every 4 years.
The Lions have to find a starting MLB
in the 3rd round. Hey, NorthLeft. McKillop is starting to look good.
but josh mcdaniels and mangienie look like tools

so
Why did we grab a Safety? Why not a CB? I would think that we have a bigger need at CB than S?
WHY?!?!?! Oh god, Why!?!?!
Personally, I would've grabbed Darius Butler

I can't argue with all three day 1 picks being best at their position
but it’s still kind of confusing as to who’s gonna block for us or tackle for us

The way things are going..
we should move into the 2nd round, just to trade it for a 1st rounder next year… what are GM’s thinking??
So here's a question
Since I know that what I want will NEVER happen, what would you think if we get (one way or another) Clint Sintim?
I watched him a lot in college… Super balanced, versatile LB…
Good move better then anything we got back there now

http://www.freep.com/article/20090424/SPORTS01/904240343/1049/rss14
article from the 24th … freep called it
Tight end has been a big part of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan’s system. The last time Linehan and quarterback Daunte Culpepper were together, in 2004 with Minnesota, Culpepper threw for 4,754 yards. Who led the Vikings in catches that year? Tight end Jermaine Wiggins, with 71.
Linehan uses two tight end sets and likes versatile players.
“You’re going to be asked to do a lot: play the fullback, play the tight end, play on the line of scrimmage, play in the backfield and play downfield, too,” tight end Casey Fitzsimmons said.
But players who can do all that are hard to find. “Typically what happens in the NFL is you have more niche players: the blocking tight end, the pass receiving tight end, things like that,” Schwartz said.
So with NE getting all these picks there gonna have to make some tough cuts come training camp and that means good players the Lions can get. Is that too optimistic

Go Tigers
Just went up 6-0 on KC. What’s left for the Lions to do today except to trade up?
I think Broncos still felt dirty about the Cutler ordeal
so they needed to take a McBath.

One quick thing I want to mention
The guy the Raiders drafted was projected to be a free agent by Mel Kiper. 73rd safety. They are dumb.

So let me pose a question...
They got me thinking with all the talk earlier about our lackluster running game… Do any of you think we actually need an upgrade at RB? Obviously all of the analysts believe so, but I like Kevin Smith..any thoughts?
no KSmith and Morice are solid as are the FB we got
by Curse of Bobby Layne 50 Years Strong on Apr 25, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
That's what I thought too..
So what is with all of the analysts trash talking our running game? It really made me mad.. and i’m still pissed Stafford didn’t stand up for Kevin Smith..
Because technically it wasn't very good last year - stats wise
We ranked close to last again. But they didn’t watch any games, so they just go by stats alone. They didn’t see Smith get better as the season went on. Typical.
It just seems like if you are going to be on TV running your mouth..
you should have to have a clue what the hell you are talking about..
Quarterback Drafts
With Eli Manning drafted in 2004, does that mean the Lions will be in the Super Bowl in 2013?
Kiper just said
that Sanchez was the first round QB guaranteed not to be a bust.
I don’t like to say this, but seriously, F#@K you, Kiper.
He's predicting Matt Stafford #1 for YEARS now, and he's all of a sudden all about Sanchez?!?!?!
Mel, you suck
I was just listening to him.
He said very specifically that. Freeman was boom or bust, Stafford could be a bust, and Sanchez definitely wasn’t going to be a bust.
He said, when asked.
“you know who nobody would say was going to be a bust out of that group? Sanchez”
There goes Staffords personal wide out
