are we missing something..
in our scouting of the current Lions roster? I mean, there is no MLB. Yet, Schwartz and Meyhew have not drafted one yet. They are not stupid. I have been watching Cliff Avril. About a month ago he was listed at 6’3 263lbs. Now he is at 252lbs.on all sports sites. You would think that if he was going to play DE. He would be gaining weight not losing it. He played some LB at Purdue. Could he be a MLB in the making?
if he is
They’ve concealed it well. He did play LB in college but I don’t think he gas the ability to play MLB.

Offense can be a good defense, look like thats what we're going for at least.
Defense still needs help but it has been improved through FA. Schwartz must believe his defensive prowess and a few late round picks will be enough to not make them the door mat anymore so I say screw it, with 3-1 take Duke Robinson. With Pettigrew and this guy Backus might not look so bad this year and Kevin Smith will have some gaping holes. Owning the clock is a form of defense in itself and maybe it will be enough help on offense so Stanton won’t end up getting his first real shot after Daunte and Matt get injured if we don’t do anything to help that left side. #1 G in the draft.

Duke Robinson
and one of those MLB’s at 3-20 would pretty much save your drafts no?
If you get those 2 guys you get possibly the best OG in the draft, then a starting caliber MLB.
Of course they could go in a different direction, but the players are still out there.
Agree completely

I wouldn't say failure
Since we don’t know how these players will turn out, Personally, I like this draft and if we get Robinson and an MLB I consider an A for this draft.

I was speaking purely....
from the standpoint that we have gaping holes at MLB and LG. If we pass on Duke Robinson at 65, we will not get the best guard available. We already lost out on the best MLB’s……McKillop might be decent. That is why I said Robinson and McKillop MIGHT save the draft. I do not know how the guys we already drafted will pan out, but I do know that we have not addressed our biggest needs (outside of a long term option at QB, which everyone knows I feel could have waited).
I C Scott McPhillips
& possibly the Duke, or DT I kinda thought they were targeting R Brace, I remember cn Pettigrow come in 4 a visit & I thought 2 myself, they’d only b talkin 2 him if the were thinkin 20th pick, but that’d b crazy right? Never thought that would b right & I naturally assumed Rey M’s name would b called 4 sure 33rd, a little baffled. idk what these guys r doin, but would like 2 know what’s really goin on down there n allen Park, WTF…
Scott McKillop, MLB Pitt
This would be a nice ILB. Tackleing machine, good work ethic, not the quickest but he is inside to stop the run. Not much on the down side. Robinson would be a nice pick to but ILB is getting thin, and we do not have one.
I felt McKillop
would be a great fallback plan if we didn’t get Maualuga or Laurinatus. He should be just as effective as Beckwith, Ellerbe, or Brinkley. All four of them should be able to push Lenon aside rather quickly. That’s if Lenon resigns. (I personally don’t care if he does.)
I think that the MLB's
Here are fairly interchangeable, but one will be available at 3-20. Please draft Duke Robinson!

Mckillop, then the rest
He has the most experience and the least down side and no real injuries. Nice size and like I said, he can tackle. But I agree with taking Robinson first. McKillop should be there at 3-20.
I like him also
Mcgee would be a nice fit mainly because he is versitale. Not much down side. Has some special teams credit mentions to his name.
Nice
I agree with you on Robinson however I would rather see us get Brinkley for MLB. I was happily suprised at how we drafted today. I think it will be fine. Delmas will be a stud at FS for us. We could even get Meredith in the third who could potentially be a franchise LT. Linehan said that Backus, Raiola, and Cherilus all played well last year so the Robinson pick will make a lot of sense too. With Robinson we could bring in Salaam out of FA. He said he was gonna wait till the draft was over to sign with anyone.

this is a tough one...
out of the few ILBs remaining i like
Ellerbe
McKillop
Brinkley
Duke Robinson is still on the board and its hard to pass him up. It would also be nice to be able to grab the top QB, TE, S and G in the draft.
I also like Michael Johnson for our DE replacement, even though he is rated as not following through.
And i think the Lions like Gilbert for a DT, even though i think he is kinda small for that position (weight wise).
Hmmm, we DO have DT on the roster, that that isnt a total burning need at this point, it would just be nice to get, but with the amount of talent left, i dont think we are getting any improvement over what we have right now. Maybe that can wait till next year.
We already have Peterman and Loper for our guards, i am not a big fan of Peterman though, unless he really improved in the off season. So grabbing Duke and using him for a guard or maybe a backup for everyone’s favorite LT Backus right now seems good to me too.
So, do we continue to address the OL or go with defense on this one?
I know the consensus is to take the best player available, but who is it?
We have to get an ILB with one of these picks, but i dont think you pass up Duke Robinson, so take him for the #65 pick.
Johnson will be gone by pick #82, so use that pick for the ILB, whoever the best one available is. At this point, i think we may have short changed the defense. I just hope our moves in FA work out better.
Duke Robinson
Would be a great pickup, but what about Jamon Meredith? I’ve seen him projected in the early 2nd rd. He can play either left or right tackle and could be a good depth guy that can eventually make an impact.
HIs scouting report:
Height: 6-45/8 | Weight: 304 | 40-Time: 5.03
Strengths:
Excellent athlete…Adequate height and bulk with long arms…Is quick and agile…Great balance and is a natural knee bender…Nimble feet and moves well laterally…Terrific pass blocker who can protect the edge…Good strength…Mobile with great range to get to the second level and pull…Offers positional versatility…Real smart..Experienced.
Weaknesses:
May be a bit of a ‘tweener…Needs to be more tough and physical…Not real stout at the point of attack…Mediocre initial punch…Doesn’t get a great push in the run game…Poor hand use…Not a finisher and lacks a killer instinct…Questionable awareness…Is not a fit for every scheme.
ILBs Still Available
Ellerbe is undersized (236 pds)
Mckillop needs to adds strength
Beckwith isn’t durable at all (shoulder and knee injuries in consecutive seasons)
Brinkley has the knee injury although he’s 2 years removed from it and looks 100% now but durabillity may be an issue
I certainly don’t want another undersized guy. So Ellerbe is out. With our lack of depth at MLB we can’t get an injury prone guy, so Beckwith is out. THat leaves Mckillop or Brinkley. I would be happy with either one. I prefer the 252 lb monster at the Mike, Brinkley
ACL Surgery
He had a torn ACL in 07 and never got his speed back in 08. Is projected to be avg. unless he can get his speed back. I like Mckillop. You can always add strenghth
size
how hard is it as a linebacker to put on size?
that’s what coaching and conditioning is for.
remember, these guys are only around 21- 23 years old. size development can come in the off season. i would rather have a (small) guy than a previously broke one. you never know when that might come back to haunt you.
Besides, i am pretty sure the Lions staff saw Ellerbe at U of GA’s pro day.
