So, I had been pretty wary of Mayhew from day 1. He was a Millen disciple and that is two strikes in my book. I gave him some credit for the Roy Williams trade and let that credit run through free agency where I thought they had a plan. They seemed to focus on getting some WRs and DBs in free agency and they seemd to be leaving holes at DT, OT or OG, and MLB.
So now we are on the back end of the draft and what has this brilliant man put up for us? He freaking drafted a DB and WR (I am not even going to talk about the TE. Apparently Mayhew thinks we are playing Madden). He has not touched the Oline. Right now, I think we are forced to play a 3-4 because we do not have anyone that can play MLB and they don't seem interested in picking up anyone. What in the hell is going on in the draft room?
If I hear "draft the best player available" I am going to puke my nuts up. That strategy SHOULD work for the Lions because we have so many needs that we could pretty much throw darts and find starters. They have found a way to screw that up. Why a WR? Why an OLB?
Derrick Williams? Seriously? So they expect this guy to play past 2 vets on the WR core to get on the field. My prediction is this: 2 years on the team, 30 catches total, 250 yards, 0 TDs, cut from the team during the great rebuilding effort of 2011. Great pick.
So, in conclusion: I have given up on Mayhew. This guy got his chance. I hope Schwartz is good enough to caoch a WR to play MLB, because otherwise we are in for repeat season. I can't give up on the Lions, but I know how to root for a team whose management I think are bumbling idiots. I thought I didn't have to anymore, but give me a way that this draft makes sense.
At least I am not a Raiders fan watching the draft.
