Not sure if this is a wake-up call for RB Kevin Smith or not, but Jim Schwartz, in explaining the Lions' high draft grade for LB DeAndre Levy, he dropped this little nugget: The Lions were busy looking at Beanie Wells last week, thinking he might fall to them at No. 33. And they very likely would've grabbed him, or at least that was the impression he left. It was a moot point, considering Arizona grabbed him at No. 31, as a lot of us expected. But, still ...
"We did some work on Beanie Wells late in the week with an anticipation of where he might drop," Schwartz said, later adding when asked about it, "We considered just about everybody. We had done a lot of work on where (Wells) was and looking at a lot of mock drafts late in the week and who might take him. We were ready in case he would've fallen."

I don't think Smith had anything to worry about
I think Wells was being considered since he is a top 20 talent. Also, lots of teams are implementing 2 back systems, Wells would be a fine power back.
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

I would be really pissed off
If they had done that. Kevin Smith is fantastic and busts his ass for us

I mentioned this before the draft. Beanie was a HUGE talent who was slipping down boards..
I think his fall was due to most teams already having RBs from last years draft and also his durability concerns.
He would have been a STEAL at #33 and I am almost positive he would have been worth the selection. As much as I like Kevin Smith, Beanie Wells would have been a Top 5 selection most years and would have been a major upgrade.

Screw this
If I was Kevin Smith, I would post that quote where I slept, ate, drank and went to the bathroom. Real bulletin board material for motivation coming from your own team. There is no loyalty in this league, it’s a business! No job is safe on an 0-16 team.
Let’s see who has the better NFL career. Beanie Wells is a very good player, but has well publicized flaws. Her ran a really poor 40 at the combine. Slower than Kevin Smith’s. He’s not a great receiver an is very injury prone. I doubt an upgrade from what we have and definitely not a need!!!

There is no way...
…that Smith’s job was in danger. They could very easily be loving the type of game that, say, New Orleans takes on with 2-3 running backs splitting the time. It’s been effective in the right offenses. Smith is our central back, and he knows that.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
