POD Community Mock Draft Rules
Now that the GMs are in place, it's time to go over the rules of the Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft.
- When you make your pick, e-mail it to me at syblogs@yahoo.com along with your write-up. The write-up should be at least a paragraph explaining why you made the pick. It can be as long as you want, but just try to make it at least a paragraph. Also, please proofread the write-up to make sure it doesn't have any spelling/grammatical errors. Obviously there will be some mistakes here and there (no one's perfect, including myself), but I don't want it to be written like a text message or something like that. Even though it's not my work, I would like it to look professional since it is being published on my site. So if I see a typo or something, I will fix it.
Also, when you send me your pick, make sure to put "POD Mock Draft" as the subject. That way I won't miss it. - As for when your pick should be made, check out the schedule below to see when it is going to be published on the site. This is important: Your pick should be sent to me the day before it is published. If it is the first pick of the day, get it sent to me by 12 p.m. ET on the day before it will be published. The second pick should be sent by 5 p.m. ET the day before. And the third pick needs to be sent by 10 p.m. ET the day before. This may be a tad confusing, but I am doing this to make sure this goes smoothly and efficiently so we can get a second round in. That way if a problem arises, we can get it taken care of before the schedule for when the picks are posted is thrown out of whack.
Just to make sure there is no confusion, here is an example of what people would do if their pick is going to be posted on Sunday (people on Saturday have a different schedule -- see the next bullet):
Seahawks - deadline for pick: 12 p.m. ET on Saturday
Browns - deadline for pick: 5 p.m. ET on Saturday
Bengals - deadline for pick: 10 p.m. ET on Saturday - For those of you that will have your pick posted on Saturday (tomorrow), your deadlines will be a tad different. The Lions' pick won't be due until 3 p.m. today, the Rams' pick won't be due until 8 p.m. tonight, and the Chiefs' pick won't be due until 1 a.m. Saturday. That way the GMs for those teams can have some time to do their research since this is pretty short notice.
- Make sure to look at the schedule (below) right now to make note of when your pick will be due (the day before the date listed on the schedule). If there is a conflict or something like that, let me know as soon as possible so we can get it worked out right away.
- If you are a GM of the Lions, Broncos, or Eagles, don't forget that your team has two first-round picks.
- When a pick is e-mailed to me, I will e-mail the next GM to let him know he is on the clock. I will include an updated list of picks in my e-mail so you know who is available. My e-mail is going to be sent to whatever address is listed in your account. If you want it to be sent to a different one for whatever reason, let me know right now by sending an e-mail to syblogs@yahoo.com.
- Due to time restrictions, there will be no trades.
- After your pick is posted, make sure to defend it in the comments section if there are any naysayers (don't forget: attack the opinion, not the person). Each pick will get a separate post so it can be discussed. There will also be an approval poll to get an exact idea of what readers of the site think of the pick.
- Please do not talk about picks that haven't been posted on the site until they are posted. That way we can make sure the reveal of each pick is somewhat exciting. Comments about picks that haven't already been posted will be deleted.
- Finally, perhaps the most important rule of all is to DO RESEARCH. I can't stress this one enough. Don't wait until the last minute to get an idea of what your team's needs are. Check out the SB Nation blog for your team, go to draft websites, or whatever, just make sure to do research. That way you can put together a list of a few players you have in mind and won't go past the deadline for when your pick is due. Also, that way you can be prepared for when the team right before you takes the player you want. Trust me, it will happen to some of you.

If we have time for a second round, here is who will represent the teams without a first-round pick:
- Chicago Bears - Gym Schwartz
- Dallas Cowboys - Curse of Bobby Layne 50 Years Strong
- Carolina Panthers - beef99
The following users are alternates:
If a problem arises with a certain GM, one of the three users above will take over that team. Alternates hopefully won't need to be used until at least the second-round, where there could be an issue or two. If you want to be added to the list of alternates, let me know by leaving a comment.

How soon
after someone turns in their pick will you post it? People will need to know who was drafted before them so they can make their pick and not take the same person. If the time is too short or it doesn’t get posted immediately, someone may not get theirs in or take the same guy. Thanks.

I can answer this one
in the instructions, Sean says he will post three picks per day, but those picks are due the day before. He will email you when the GM before you made their pick.
It looks like you pick Kansas City at #3, the third pick that will be published on Saturday.
Your pick is due by 1 AM Saturday. Notice that the Rams pick is due by 8 PM tonight. This means when the Rams pick is turned in sometime by 8:00 PM, Sean will email you to tell you who the Rams picked, giving you from 8 PM until 1 AM (five hours) to see who’s still available, to make your selection, and email it to Sean.
Did I get it right?
Sorry
Didn’t read the entire thing. I was in a time crunch at work (no coffee in the breakroom didn’t help.) and just zipped through it. Thanks for the explanation.

13th Pick!!
With the 13th pick of the draft…the Washington Redskins select Jon Kitna Jr.
It might be a good idea
to have a paragraph typed up in advance for a few of the picks that you’re considering. That way, when it’s time to make your pick, choose the appropriate paragraph, copy and paste it in your e-mail to Sean. I don’t know who I’ll be able to select, but when my turn comes up, I’ll already be ready, already. (the second “already” was for those in the Department of Redundancy Department)
As if I needed another
….reason to dispise the Chicago Bears, they go ahead and trade away their first round pick!! Now I can’t be a part of the mock draft, unless we have time for the second round. BOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
That was actually my first thought when I found out what was in the trade
I knew someone just got screwed over.
Pride of Detroit, SB Nation's Lions Blog
I put a fanpost on the San Diego blog,
asking for some input. It sat dormant for 2 days so I posted my own comment reiterating that I wanted some input. Then I got some clown being a smart aleck, telling me to draft a kicker. I couldn’t resist so I asked him if he was Al Davis. (In San Diego, that’s like calling somebody Millen) I get the feeling that the people on the San Diego blog just don’t feel as passionate about football as we do. Anyway, I think I’m just going to do my own analysis and leave the San Diego fans out of it. I’ve followed their team enough to know what’s going on.
Anyone else post on other blogs asking for input? What happened?
I've seen other fans who did...
…and the general reaction was “do your own research, you’ll learn something”.
Which sounds reasonable to me. If I have 31 different fans who don’t know your team asking “who should I draft? who should I draft? who should I draft?” without bothering to spend an hour or so reading up on discussions that have already addressed those questions (there’s no shortage of debates during draft season for any team), I probably wouldn’t provide a simple answer either.
Not to sound too curmudgeonly (sorry if I do), but I guess I would rather have somebody learn about the Lions, who we have, who we want, what we need, what prospects fit our philosophy and our schemes, rather than just think of us “a winless team that needs a quarterback because Mel Kiper said so, or maybe a Left Tackle”, and asking fans briefly for a free answer for their mock draft.
I'm well aware of
San Diego’s team needs. I’ve been a fan of the Chargers since I was a kid. I have a good enough grasp on their team that I don’t really need to learn about much. I was ticked when they lost Igor Olshansky to Dallas a few weeks back. My intention was to allow them some input, but, whatever. My major issue with the San Diego fans was that they just didn’t seem passionate. They seem like they have about one tenth of the traffic on their blog as we do.
And, no, you didn’t sound curmudgeonly. I can see that they would view me as an outsider, no matter how much I knew about their team.
Also, a true fan of any team knows that Mel Kiper doesn’t know a thing.
I took another approach.
Someone else posted the results of their Mock Draft and I reviewed the fanshot posts and got a feel for the fans opinions on what their team needs were, as they were doggin’ the pick made for them. I also went on the teams live chat and got a few comments there. I pretty much know where they’d like to go with the pick.

I looked at various 'Expert' Mock Drafts
I went to SI, nfl.com, the team site, and other thoughtful Mock Drafts to see what they were recommending/predicting. Then I looked at the team roster, depth chart, and various stats to get a feel for the Giant’s strengths and weaknesses. I also looked over what they had done in free agency to get a feel for where they were headed.
Based on that information I decided on my own what I felt they would need to sustain their outstanding recent performance. I then looked over the prospects available at those positions to get an idea who might be available and worth the picks [29, 45, 60] that the Giants have.
The Giants are interesting in that they are so strong and deep that I can really switch gears in a hurry to draft for depth [best player available] if someone falls to the spots that they have.
That was always part of the plan.
He was done for at least 2009 anyway in my mind. The decision will be which round to pick his replacement. There are a number of good WRs around so even the second round for the Giants should have some good prospects.
