POD Community Mock Draft: Pick No. 2

With the second pick of the 2009 Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the St. Louis Rams select Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji.
Here is CLF's reasoning for the pick:
Replace Orlando Pace?....Torry Holt?....That was the old Rams, the new direction of St Louis is Defense... and Spags just added to the weapons already in place for his Jim Johnson, high pressure, type of Defense to succeed. This 6'2", 337lb man beast will dominate offensive lines for years to come and help Rams fans turn the page on the 'greatest show on turf'. A new era of dominating defense will be the future of the St Louis Rams with the help of 2nd overall pick, BJ Raji.

Way to f*ck up my plan for the Packers, thanks
Very good pick, I can see this actually happening. Spags is going to build his D and win with a mediocre QB and good running game
very thoughtful pick
too often i consider Jason Smith for this pick. but i definitely see where you’re coming from and think you’re on to something.
Nice pick
With a new head coach defensive line is the way to go, he will be an impact player from week 1

Bulger will be in a body cast by November.
They have no offensive line depth, especially at either tackle. Their big FA signing, Jason Brown, is a Center/Guard. They gave up 45 sacks last year and rushed for 4 yds per carry [Detroit averaged 3.8].
I would be very surprised if they did not take Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe.
CLF, do you believe that there is later round help available for their offensive line?
Although I have to say I agree with you that their overall direction will probably be to improve their defence.
THANK YOU for keeping Raji out of Green Bay
The last thing we need is another big defender for Raiola & [guard] to have trouble with at the line of scrimmage, in a division with Pat & Kevin Williams, Tommie Harris & Brian Urlacher
That would create a formidable front line tandem
Raji and Chris Long would give O-coordinators nightmares. Good choice, guess it was too much to hope he would fall to the Bronco’s
Not sure I agree with you, CLF
I like Raji a lot, but I can’t see the Rams passing on Smith or Monroe at number two. Especially, with Raji’s recent drug test failure at the combine. I have to believe that will hurt his stock some.
I understand the pick – new coach, former defensive coordinator – big run stuffer needed on a bad defense. But I fear this is just too high for Raji when there are a few players that might be better overall players and less risky. Raji improved his stock with the Senior Bowl practices and even in the game, but will the Rams look past the huge hole at left tackle when they don’t pick again until #35? I dunno. I don’t think so.
I'm not sure I care...
As GM of the St Louis Rams, do you think it should matter what a blogger thinks? :P

Disagree with thispick...
…they will go offensive lineman for sure…and if they don’t, they’ll go Aaron Curry, if for no other reason but that he is one of the surest things in this year’s draft.
My money is on Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe at #2 if the Lions do not go that route.
GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!
i agree
But sounds like Raji is a beast so maybe this pick will be good, I haven’t seen Raji go #2 in any mock drafts so this is ballsy.
What fun would it be....
If our mock draft was like all the others? What challenge would it be?
To the critics…. OT would’ve been a solid, smart pick, yes. But at the end of the day, I felt Raji would have more game changing impact than any other player available. Combining Raji with Long was just too much to pass up….and to add, my scouts gave me the confidence that we could address the OL better at 35 than DT at 35.
I expected...
that you would do something a little unorthodox, but I’m okay with it because of this statement: “we could address the OL better at 35 than DT at 35”. I think you’re right about that. The only comment there is that DT is a need, yes, but they could go with just about any defensive position and win at #35.
Interesting pick
Everyone has already spoke about the obvious need for OT but Raji would be an impact player on the Rams line. Proves you can’t predict the draft.
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
As my childhood favorite Arte Johnson would say Veeeery Interesting----------
Shakes up the draft we needed a reach pick like that.

That would be a great read.

no way
This mock draft is already going as bad as one of Kiper’s. Why did they just release Orlando Pace? To draft a DT? No!! They will draft either Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe get ur head outa ur butt and think about why they released Pace. Whoever runs this site should change this bad pick.
This isn't the footballsfuture forum

ha ha
As a seahawks fan who also loves the lions I would love to see this pick. This makes no sense at all. Raji had a good combine workout that’s all. He was virtually a nothing in college. He’s another lazy pothead. He is the type of player who will only play hard in contract years just to get paid and that is about it. I would love to see the rams draft him. That means smith falls all the way to 4. Go rams.
I know Spags
Im a Giants fan. I know damn well that he is either going to go O-Line so that they can maybe get a quick fix at the line.
If they go defense, Raji doesn’t fit at all. The dark horse here is Orakpo. He is a beast and real good 4-3 end, not really a 3-4 OLb I feel he’ll be out of position there.
Orakpo is my choice for the Rams. Spags would have Chris Long, Adam Carriker and Orakpo. That seems more like the Giants D-Line than Long, Carriker and Raji.
Plus the GIants DT’s aren’t really fat space eaters, they are more pass rusher types.
