POD Community Mock Draft: Pick No. 3

With the third pick of the 2009 Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry.
Here is Jettero2112's reasoning for the pick:

I say this is a no brainer. The Chiefs, in 2008, finished 31st in overall defense (one step ahead of our beloved Lions who were dead last), 28th in passing defense (allowed 3748 yds against for an average of 7.3 yds per play) and 30th in rush defense (allowed 2543 yds against for an average of 5.0 yds per play). They need help. Bad. They need a leader and playmaker on defense and Curry is that guy. There will be people who say Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith but they need more help on defense and there will be better selections on offensive tackles and guards later in the draft.
Aaron is a big play, extremely athletic, linebacker who can defend and attack from both inside and outside very well from all three positions. He covers a lot of ground very quickly and plays well against both the run and pass. Curry has fantastic blitzing skills and is very fast in pursuit.
Reading a lot of the draft information on the web, pundits say Curry is the safest pick in the draft. I also believe he's the best defensive player in the draft as well. The Chiefs can't go wrong taking Curry at 1-3 as he will anchor their linebacker corps and be a decisive leader on defense for many years to come.

Maybe a revival of the Chiefs defence of old?
Probably not, but a good pick anyway.
2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).
I don't think that you'll get...
too much resistance on this pick. Perfect combination of need versus impact… if Curry ends up being the next great linebacker. If not, it’s still a little high for him.
I could see KC going tackle as well. They need to protect their shiny new investment in Matt Cassel. Say, Jason Smith and Brandon Alberts as your bookend tackles for the next ten years? Not too shabby.
Good pick, Jettero.
Who voted "No"?
I’d honestly like to hear a good reason for KC not to take Curry if he’s there at #3
I would vote no if I were
a Broncos, Chargers, or Raiders fan.

I root for the Chargers
when I’m not rooting for the Lions. I say the Chiefs would be idiots to pass up Curry. It’s a good move for them. They’ll still be behind the other teams in the AFC West. (Well, not too far behind Oakland).
That's what I'd like to know.
How could you not like this pick for Kansas City? I thought there’d be a lot more discussion on this one as a lot of people want him to go 1-1 to Detroit.

Good pick, very nice write up.
Not sure why people think that KC should take an offensive tackle. They drafted Branden Albert last year in the first round and apparently he is doing a fine job as their LT. They can pick up some depth later, but they really need to upgrade their defence.
Really
Albert is at LT? I thought people thought he was a guard. If he turns out to be a solid starter, they got a steal
Check out nickandroll.blogspot.com
Yeah, he played all of last season there.
The funny thing is that Eugene Monroe played LT and Alberts played LG his last season at Virginia. Could be a great reunion!
Yes, he is.
You can check the KC depth chart on the NFL.com site for the KC Chiefs team.
That is one of the reasons I keep thinking that Eugene Monroe is the best Left Tackle in college football. He kept B. Albert at Guard in 2007 at Virginia. Not sure how much of a steal he was. The Chiefs drafted him at #15 in the first round. Sounds like they knew his value pretty well.
well, we did trade down to take Gos
which let us move to the top of the third round where we only needed to trade up 2 more spots to take Kevin Smith
Long term, I think we’ll be happy we have Gos+Smith than just Albert. Plus, last year was arguably a little early to take a LT to replace Backus (he still had a lot of $$$ left on his contract), so trading down for a RT was a decent move.
