Scout.com has Lions Taking Sanchez #1 and Broncos Taking Stafford
I was just looking at a new update on the scout.com mock and they have the lions taking Sanchez over Stafford.
They also had Denver trading their 2 first rounders to KC and moving up to take Stafford at #3.
Other notes : Monroe #2, Smith #4, and Curry #5.
So in other words, at least all of the players who the lions have interest in are in the Top5. That is better than most years.
My real question is, not do YOU want this to happen, but do you think that there is any way the lions are trying to hide their real interest in Sanchez with all the Stafford talk and are really planning on taking Sanchez?
I already know that a lot of you don't want Stafford and that a lot of you want Sanchez, or no QB at all, but I want to know what you think the LIONS are thinking.
Anyone else see this being a surprise pick on draft day? I just don't think that is the case but Scout.com is fairly reputable.
Any thoughts?

They've had that for a while
Still highly doubt it’ll happen.

Dumb
I think the new Lions regime has already proven themselves to be too competant to make a dumb move like this. There is a history of USC QBs busty as pro’s, Matt Lienart is the most recent but the word is still out on Palmer. Also Stafford is way more physically and mentally gifted as well as battle tested (Staff has 38 starts to Sanchez 16).
ahem
Matt Cassel? Carson Palmer? Pete Beathard? even Rodney Peete. Sure USC has its share of busts but it has its gems as well. Better than Oregon anyway
Word is out that Palmer is one of the Top 5 QB's right now in the Game.
Maybe you’ve been locked in a Dome for a while, but Palmer was the #2 QB in the league when he was healthy and before Brady got Randy Moss and a NCAA type offense installed.
Maybe now he has to prove that again, but he’s still on the same level as anyone not named Brady or Manning (Peyton that is.)

Don't think so myself.
I didn’t research this first but I am going to say it Let me know if I am wrong. But I don’t think we would take him because he is more famliar with west coast style offense so I think if we are going to take a QB they will take one that fits better into our offensive style. Like I said I might be way off so if so let me know I am .

that is part
of it. Stafford is just more polished as a QB now. Stafford has a better understanding of the game than Sanchez.
Maybe
If the Lions have both QB’s rated similar and Sanchez is more signable due to the fact that Stafford and Smith have the same agent, I could possibly see that happening no matter who the Lions pick #1 they want that player signed.

That is sad...
I agree with you totally, Rebel. What is sad is that it can come down to the agents involved. And not the players.
Coach said
Well coach said he is picking by talent not by position needed. So I think if he has them rated close he’ll pick the one he feels better suits the teams direction and not for his agent. Coach doesn’t pay his salary anyway he just wants player that best suits his coaching style and will win games cause the coaches job depends on it also.Cause the powers that pay the players also payes the coach if you know what i mean…. If we do take 1 no matter who I hope he works out PERIOD and doesn’t flop…

Old News Guys
As Sean says they have had this pick for quite awhile. Over three weeks I think. I guess they have not let the combine, pro days, and anything else sway them from their original mistake.
No way KC trades with Denver
Despite the Pioli/McDaniels relationship, 2 division rivals will not make that kind of a trade.
I don’t think Detroit will take Sanchez either. Despite all the smokescreens, I just don’t see it.
Smokescreens?
The Lions do not need to disguise any interest, and didn’t choose to bring Sanchez to the D, instead extending his pro day work out. Doesn’t sound like first over-all treatment- but the lions do like having fun w/ the draft.
People are guessing Sanchez because Stafford averages all but an interception a game (last year all in SEC play and 1 to the Sparties), and under 1.5 TD’s per game. Sloooow decisions create doubt, combine that w/ a limited running attack and no pass protection and the transition seems doomed.
Smokescreens refers to
Saying one thing and doing another. My point was that, despite other “smokescreens” this year, I don’t see Detroit’s lack of interest in Sanchez as being false. Therefore, it’s not a smokescreen. It just is what it is.
Doubt it
The only way I could see this happening is if the Lions think that Stafford and Sanchez are really close and then try to leverage them against each other to get a more reasonable contract. So they might tell Sanchez that they’ll take him #1 overall if he’ll accept a smaller contract. I don’t think it’ll happen though.
It is possible that Lions prefer Sanchez
I’ve read lots of rumours around that they do, but they are rumours so you can’t put to much stock in them. I’ve said this before but I don’t see to much difference, talent-wise between the two. Stafford will probably be the pick but Sanchez might be the surprise.
