POD Community Mock Draft: Pick No. 17

1 17 Mark Sanchez QB Southern Cal
General Manager: LestersRevenge

With the seventeenth pick of the 2009 Pride of Detroit Community Mock Draft, the New York Jets select Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Here is LestersRevenge's reasoning for the pick:

This pick is a no brainer.   The Jets come into the season with three unproven QBs in Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge after the departure of the Brett Favre experiment.  The team seems high on Clemens and Ratliff but that can be interpreted as "coach speak".  I don't think Rex Ryan has seen enough film on either player to be that excited.  The number two quarterback in this draft has fallen in their lap and the Jets will be thrilled to grab him. Wide receiver is a glaring need and HB would draw serious consideration here.  While there could be a run on wide receivers at the tail end of the draft with possibly the Ravens, Dolphins and NY Giants all taking wide receivers, the Jets are fortunate to have a wide receiver need in a deep wide receiver draft.  There will still be talent at wide receiver for the Jets in round two with the possibility of Kenny Britt or Derrick Williams.  There is talk of adding a running back for depth but I don't think you draft depth in the first round.  Thomas Jones had a great year last year and Leon Washington is a great change of pace back even though he is in a contract year.  I think they address RB next year.

Defensively, the Jets need an inside linebacker to complement Harris and Suggs and James Laurinaitis could garner some attention.  A good corner opposite Darrelle Revis could be an option as well and the Jets have a need at DE like every other team in the NFL.  The Jets added two solid defensive players in Suggs and Jim Leonhard in the offseason to help solidify that defense so I think they look at offense in the first part of this draft.

This is New York and the Jets make a splash with QB Mark Sanchez and draft their franchise QB.

Alright

I can see people having problems with Percy Harvin going to the Chargers, but who on Earth voted no on this poll. The Jets NEED a QB. If Sanchez is still there, they have to take him.

Hey, Don't look at me! I voted YES this time.

An easy pick for a change. Nice analysis of your pick.

Yup

Now they will have 4 unproven young guys fighting for the starting QB spot.

I think people will just say no cuz

they feel like it.

I said yes cuz this is what new coaches have to do, they get new QB’s.

Sanchez would probably be a good bet to start right away. The Jets have a good O-Line, their problem last year was Farve’s moron ideas, as well as the coaching staff putting the ball in his hands too much.

Sanchez is better than any of the other guys on the team. Im sure they’ll be thrilled he lasts this far.

I voted yes

the no’s are from folks hoping he would fall to 20 so they can say “See, we could’ve drafted Curry #1!”

I voted no

I’m unsure that Sanchez would fit in New York’s system. I think Freeman will be the pick here. Probably wrong, but that’s what I think.

The Jets don't have a system

Kinda like you guys with Millen, the Bengals right now and the Cardinals before Wisenhunt, their GM is the dumbest in football. They have been trying to copy Belicheat for years. I bet now that Rex Ryan will at least try to build the team his way, but Tannenbaum didn’t give him free reign, its why Belicheck didn’t want the Job and why Mike Shanahan turned it down.

Sanchez may seem to not make sense but they had Pennington for years and he didn’t do a bad job. Sanchez has a howitzer arm compared to Pennington, he may be what the Jets need. At least on paper.

Good choice

The Jets need a quarterback, especially after trading away Pennington and going with old man Favre last year. It’s time for them to find a franchise guy and Sanchez would be great for them. I doubt he’ll actually fall this far but if he did, the Jets would be stupid to pass on him.
