Predictions

If there are no big upgrades signed, here we go.
Pre season reacord: 3-1
Depth player to start: Andre Fluellen
Best Offensive Player: Kevin Smith ( hope they get o-line help or they play better.)
Best Defensive Player: Peterson
Best Rookie: Pettigrew (Sorry BennieBlades. Delmas will do well but I see Pettigrew making a bigger impact.)
Most Improved Player: Kevin Smith
Will Stafford Start: Only if Culpepper gets hurt
Lions Season Record: 6-10
Draft Position: 8th

by Lead Hunter on May 14, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I almost agreed...

…with you on the chances of Stafford starting weighing on Culpepper getting hurt. It’s very possible that they won’t play him all season, especially if we are not performing awfully.

I agree with what Coach Schwartz says only. The player that gives the team the best chance to win will start. If Stafford is clearly better than Culpepper before game 1, then Stafford better F’ing start.

I’de like to see Stafford sit and learn, but if he is equal or better than Daunte…you have to look to the future. Start him IF that is the case.

by BIGWalt2990 on May 16, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, sure

If Stafford is the clearly superior QB, then we all would hope he’d start. I think the purpose of this prediction is to state our opinions as to whether he actually will be ready to start this season. You’re absolutely right though…the only opinion that really matters belongs to Jim Schwartz.

Lions Pre-Season Record: 2-2

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Advil

Lions Reguar Season Record:5-11

Best Offensive Player For The Lions:Calvin

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Peterson

Best Rookie: Delmas

Most Improved Player: Backus-only place to go is up

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Yes-due to injury-week 7

Position For 2010 Draft:8

by CR on May 14, 2009 12:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good post...

Lions Pre-Season Record: 2-2

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Andre Fluellen, especially after Cunningham’s comments.

Lions Regular Season Record: 7-9, with close games as losses for the most part

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Calvin Johnson – 85 receptions, 1450 yards, 14 TDs (a couple of these TDs will hopefully be beautiful, long bombs from Daunte)

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Larry Foote – 89 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 INT, 2 FFs

Best Rookie: Brandon Pettigrew (500ish yds, 4 TDs, and good run blocking) AND Louis Delmas (83 tackles, and a respectable number of INTs for a rookie S)

Most Improved Player: Kevin Smith

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Yes, Week 14. I believe the Lions will keep themselves in reasonable contention until the latter part of the season, with which they will start Stafford.

Position For 2010 Draft: 11th or so

GO LIONS! RESTORE THE ROAR!

Lions Pre-Season Record: 1-3. We actually take a look at our depth in these games and don’t play them like the Super Bowl. You know, like what teams are supposed to do in the preseason.

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Flu. He’s the consensus pick here, and I think there’s a good reason for that.

Lions Reguar Season Record: 6-10. I think they drop one or two of the “winnable” games and pull off a couple of upsets. I think the offense is close to playoff-worthy, but the D is still porous, especially in the secondary. This will keep several games out of reach for us.

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Daunte. Comeback Player of the Year.

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Ernie Sims. On a struggling defense, the LBs are the only standouts, and Sims shines above all in GunCun’s system.

Best Rookie: Brandon Pettigrew. Offensive ROY candidate.

Most Improved Player: Daunte. A full offseason, 30 fewer lbs., and Scott Linehan do wonders for him.

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: No. He comes in for garbage time snaps and otherwise plays Jim Sorgi this year.

Position For 2010 Draft: #10

My thoughts, if no other additions are made (great post HE)

Lions Pre-Season Record: 0-4. Not because they are going to be bad, but because they will be trying to evaluate talent instead of winning games. Also, by losing all 4 pre-season games, they will have no ego to ride on into the regular season.

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: This is a tough question, but if I had to pick 1, I would have to go with Fluellen. Although, I would like to see Keith Smith step up and beat out Henry and King at CB.

Lions Reguar Season Record: 7-9. I want to say 8-8 or better, but keeping it real I think they will win 5 for sure and then get 2 upset wins, showing that they will be a force to reckon with in the near future.

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Calvin Johnson – I won’t predict his stats, because it’s not going to matter. It will be between him and Culpepper for Lions Offensice MVP this year.

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: With the addition of Foote and Peterson, we could very well see a breakout season by Ernie Sims. I think Ernie will be our standout player on the D.

Best Rookie: Delmas. I am going to go ahead and concede the fact that this kid could be the real deal. If he plays, he will be in the running for defensive ROY.

Most Improved Player: Daunte Culpepper. There is no doubt in my mind, Daunte is ready, he is in the best shape of his life, and he is going to surprise the hell out of everyone.

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Not unless Culpepper gets injured. And that is the way it should be. If Culpepper returns to 04 form, we re-sign him and Stafford sits for another 2 years too….ala Aaron Rodgers (maybe not as long, but you get the point).

Position For 2010 Draft: 10th

Lions Pre-Season Record: 2-2

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: I almost have to go with one f the DT (Flu is a fav) because the depth on DT is going to leave the window open. Instead, I will go out on a limb and pick D. Williams who may take over at slot.

Lions Reguar Season Record:7-9

Best Offensive Player For The Lions:Calvin. not to say no one else will do good, but I don’t see anyone else on this team being better than him.

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Sims, I think the other LBs will open the door for him to make plays.

Best Rookie: Pettigrew

Most Improved Player: Culpepper. Otherwise…

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Staff starts week 10 when the lions are 4-6. He goes on to finish 3-3.

Position For 2010 Draft: 15

by ATL Lion on May 14, 2009 4:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought about Derrick Williams as well.

I think it’s too much of a competition at slot to call either Curry or Willams a “depth” guy, though. I have the feeling they’ll both get starts there this year.

Ronald Curry - WR

Remember you heard it here first.

Lions Pre-Season Record: 1-3

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Drew Stanton

Lions Reguar Season Record: 10-6

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Drew Stanton 110 QB rating Pro Bowl

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Larry Foote

Best Rookie: DeAndre Levy wins starting job over Sims

Most Improved Player: Drew Stanton

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Stantons miraculous story keeps him
on the bench until Drew gets traded.

Position For 2010 Draft: After the 2009 draft I’ll be in the fetal position holding my gut.
                                             with each Lion selection.

Then Lions will pick 32 DrewStanton Superbowl MVP
Although they may get the #1 & #33 also if the Stanton trade goes through.

Biggest FA pick up contribution: Julian Peterson due to pure stat line but L Foote should be but

due to unmeasureable drive & leadership

Lions Pre-Season Record: 2-2

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Cliff Avril (Fluellin will too, but i think Avril has a better year…he lead all rookies in sacks last year, and I think Lions too)

Lions Reguar Season Record: 5-11 (all but one after the bye week)

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: CJ (but the assists go to Culpepper & K Smith)

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Ernie Simms (now that he has players he can trust to play their position around him he can focus & flourish, use his speed & hitting ability to be a true difference maker)

Best Rookie: tough one…I think both Pettigrew & Delmas could be up for ROY…but Pettigrew will show success in unmeasureables more so that hard stats, making key blocks on the second level & taking safety attention away from CJ…in the end according to the measureable stats Delmas wins this one with 75+ tackles, 3 sacks, 4 picks & 4ff
***watch for Derrick Williams to make a splash with some big returns & #3wr position by end of year

Most Improved Player: Ernie Simms, after dissappointing year he returns to Pro Bowl potential

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: No, unless Culpepper is injured

Position For 2010 Draft: 6th & pick up Taylor Mays to make for a tremendous safety combo

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Julian Peterson – 83 tackles, 9 sacks, 2 FFs

Best Rookie: Louis Delmas – 80 tackles, 1 sacks, 3 int, 1 FFs, 12 pd

Most Improved Player: Ernie Sims

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Yes, Thanksgiving Day unless he makes Culpepper look like crap in training camp. Then he starts day one.

Position For 2010 Draft: 12th

I see our two most promising linemen this year as Flu and Hill. Perhaps not on week one, but I think they become cornerstones of our D going into the future.

Flu and Hill does seem like an appetising middle pairing

Hill as the big run stopper who gets the double teams and Flu as the smaller penetrator, who helps collapse the pocket and put pressure on the QB. Sounds awesome to me.

Drewslion's predictions:

Lions Pre-Season Record: 1-3… but does it really matter?

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Andre Fluellen… I agree with most that he has the best upside to unseat a veteran

Lions Reguar Season Record: 5-11… I think they’ll at least win 3 and could possibly go as high as 7… beyond that, I would be pretty surprised.

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Calvin Johnson… Will be the centerpiece and should catch close to 100 balls if healthy and if Culpepper is protected… Smith will come in a close second with over 1200 yards if healthy

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Julian Peterson… Will lead the team in sacks and should be in his sixth Pro Bowl… Foote could come in a close second

Best Rookie: Louis Delmas / Brandon Pettigrew (tie)… I couldn’t decide between the two, but I think both will have major contributions

Most Improved Player: Ernie Sims… We’ll find out that it was scheme, not talent and he’ll be unleashed again. With Peterson and Foote helping out, Sims will get back to his instinctual play that warranted the top ten selection a few years ago.

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Yes, after playoff elimination… which could come by mid-season

Position For 2010 Draft: 8th… yet another top ten selection… now we can get our left tackle

By the way… excellent post Hyperion Ecta. Don’t have time to add my own categories, but good job bringing up a relevant post topic.

Drew

I know you are all business man, but even you must know that we can’t keep on talking about the same things over and over. A little levity is good for us all. I agree that POD should try to remain on topic most of the time, since this is a Lions blog, but is there anything wrong with having fun with it? I think I have sensed your tension and distaste for some of the more off topic discussions here lately. I do not hold it against you. I have put in some very serious posts, and I am dedicated to the team. I hope that you do not lose respect for anyone for having fun and passing time. We could be very vanilla and have some ultra boring and bland discussions that go nowhere. But with a bold topic like the CJ trade hypothetical, and the slapstick of some of the other threads, I think it has been interesting, downright hilarious, and alot of fun. We are fans posting about a game…..and those posts drew alot of attention and comments from people who probably would have read them and passed on posting had they been the same old blah like “Jason Hunter signed with the Lions” or “The Lions picked up Joe Blow the WR”…..while they may be important pickups to the team, they are not exactly newsbreakers. No offense friend, but do you understand where I am coming from?

by KDawg on May 14, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think balance is important

Right now, because of the small amount of news, having a bit of fun is fine, and to be honest, I don’t mind reading it. But having proper discussions when they are brought up is still important. I posted this post because I respect the opinions of my fellow POD friends and would like to hear their thoughts on a range of topics, plus, I like predictions.

2009 = The start of the Lions Golden Age (We hope).

The post is great

And I agree with you 100%…..

I think you got me a little wrong, KDawg...

No tension here… I’m on vacation, which is why my posts are few and far between right now. Just checking in from time to time. But you have to admit some of this stuff is a serious time waster and I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a ton of time to scan through all of this stuff. No offense to you, KDawg, but it looks like you have a lot more time to post here than the average guy. You might have time to comment on every post. I do not.

Trust me, I’m a fun guy and like a good laugh as much as the next guy, but some of the recent posts have taken the discussion caliber down a few notches. Those are just not that interesting to me, that’s all. If it’s an interesting, opinionated and yes, intelligent post… I’ll comment and voice my opinion.

by DrewsLions on May 16, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fair enough

And yes, I do have alot of time on my hands right now since I am unemployed. I have been passing time by reading the comments and posting my opinions. I realize that the discussion caliber has fallen off recently, but I think we all know that it is for a lack of anything substantial to discuss. You have the right to your opinion, and the right to skip over what you feel is a waste of time. I wasn’t meaning anything by what I said to you, other than just asking if you felt that we should not have fun. I find your posts to be intelligent and often enlightening. I just felt like you really didn’t care for the humor that has been displayed recently.

by KDawg on May 17, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Humor is great and I endorse that...

to some extent. It’s just that too much of that and the site begins to lack true substance. Potential new members might get a little turned off visiting the site and seeing excessive vulgarity, bickering or excessive “jackass-ery”. Not that I think that anyone here is a jackass… that’s just a good non-word to describe excessive goofing with little substance.

In short… have fun. Let’s just add some good substance when we can.

alright lets try this!

Pre-season 0-4 like Yooper said I think that they will be looking at depth more ths year than in the past. Depth player: If there is 1 that emerges I would think it has to be on the O-line; not counting on injuries ofcourse; Its just we’ve added some interesting players and all of us seem to think that it’s not a very good line. REG SEASON: 11-5 I really beleave we can go 5-1 or 4-2 in the division and I think we are going to suprise a few teams early in the year, NO and WASH!!!! BEST OFFENCIVE PLAYER: come on unless he gets hurt MEGATRON should be a no bainer, I’d like to put Dr. Pepper in there but he is a QB for the lions they just don’t last a full season. BEST DEF PLAYER :I’m going to go out on a limb here and say BUCHANON and why not he’s a ball hawk that has some speed left in the tank. BEST ROOKIE: I don’t see how it could be anyone but DELMAS he’s going to be on the field the most and have the best chance at being a real contributor on D-fence. MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: SIMMS I just love the guy man he isn’t going to be the only tackler out there on the D and he isn’t trying to tackle guys with a banged up hand this year, plus you add the addition of 2 veteran guys to teach him some tricks of the trade and WALLA possible ALL-PRO. WILL STAFFORD START: I have allready said I beleave DR.Pepper is going to have a pro-bowl caliber season so I say only in garbage time or if He gets hurt, I don’t want him to play next year either, That would mean we are a playoff team guys…. POSITION FOR 2010 DRAFT late in the first round maybe in the the 20’s it’s hard to say being that IF they are 10-6 11-5 they could easily host a playoff game this year. I told you guys not too laugh but I really see it happening.

by davis0169 on May 14, 2009 11:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow man

I am not laughing. I wish I could share your optimism! Reality seems to be holding me down, and I just can’t see them winning more than 7 games at the most. If they do, then HALLELUJAH!!! But I think it is going to be 2-3 years before we see 10-6. I want them to win now just as bad as you and everyone else here, but I am going to keep it real, expect improvement, and hope for a miracle….:o)

i know bro I know!

like I’ve been saying for a few weeks thou Pepper is back with his O-cord and he has a moss like REC and look what they did together. It wont suprise me if they do go 10-6 or 11-5, I stated somewhere that if we can beat WASH in week 3 we could be 2-1 or 3-0(no Im not on the dope or kool-aid) But the D-fence’s are usually ahead of the O-fence’s and although it’s a road game to start the year NO will be thinking thats it’s another bye week for them and they don’t have a steller D-fence. Besides at somepoint during pre-season Brees’s growth on his face is going to make a pass at kim kardashian and Bush is going to pout for the first half of the season!!!!

by davis0169 on May 15, 2009 12:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lol

I’m not too sure Bush will be the tailback in NO this year…..there is a rumor that he will move to the slot due to the microfracture surgery that he underwent this offseason on his left knee (anyone want a source? google “Reggie Bush moving to slot”). Pierre Thomas will take over at RB1 and Bush will float out to slot like he did at USC. This is IF he can even come back this season. The same surgery ended Terrell Davis’ career and NBA player Greg Oden missed a season. Kellen Winslow had the same procedure last February and played last year (at a lesser degree, but it is possible). I had Thomas after the Bush injury last year, and I have to say he was a TD machine….We can garnish hope that New Orleans’ offense will be mis-firing when we play them, but if they are in sync…..I hate to say what I already said before.

Lions Pre-Season Record: 2-2

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Fluellen

Lions Reguar Season Record: 4-11-1 (I couldn’t decide between 4-12 or 5-11. This was a compromise)

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Kevin Smith

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Ernie Sims (The other linebackers will allow him to shine)

Best Rookie: Louis Delmas

Most Improved Player: Cliff Avril

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Thanksgiving

Position For 2010 Draft: 6th

First Win: New Orleans

Biggest Defensive Play I’m Looking Forward To: Jay Cutler getting bowled over, trying to tackle Louis Delmas after a game-deciding interception.

Biggest Offensive Play I’m Looking Forward To: Kevin Smith gashing Pittsburgh’s or Baltimore’s Defense for an 80+ yard touchdown run.

Biggest Season-End Story: As The Lions Chart Their Future With Stafford, Culpepper Anxious For Free Agency After A Positive ’09 Season.

1 of these blogs

had all of the games and stuff here’s what I think of that WK1: NO we win the game because of the growth on brees’s cheek having an affair with Kim Kardashian, Lions steal a victory, 1-0 WK 2: Home opener against Minn: a very winnable game without any funny comments. Lions 2-0 WK3: a home game that we can win Washington isn’t that good after you shut down Portis period. Lions beat them for the first time this Decade. lions 3-0 WK 4: The BEARS and Ditka breaks a leg and can’t play today. . .Da Bears loose. lions 4-0 lol there DA bears. WK5: home against the steelers, A freak ALBERTA clipper snows in the steelers and they can’t fly outta pitt so they call upon Bradshaw who happens to be doing the FOX broadcast from Ford Field to go and play against us and After a ball goes off of Jimmy Johnsons bullit proof head And delmas returns it for a win. Lions 5-0. WK 6: The same clipper that kept the steelers in pitt keeps the lions at home for this week lions lose 5-1. WK 7: Bye WK still 5-1 WK 8: home to ST.Louis By this time Jackson is allready hurt and lions have a field day 6-1 WK 9: At seat, We just don’t play good there for some reason close game but Curry gets his laugh at us for not drafting him. lions lose 6-2 WK 10:At Minn by this time AP has been fighting off the injury bug and just cant go Lions beatem up bad!!!! lions win 7-2 WK11:Home to CLEV A franchise thats as bad as the lions were last year, lions win/ just because I said so/ 8-2 WK 12:home to GB: Rogers has a dead arm by now cause he’s had too throw like 1000 passes cause the pack can’t run this year, we pick him off and Buchanon scores 3 TD by himself; remember he’s my DEF player to watch; Lions are now 9-2 WK 13: AT cinn we just don’t play that good in the cold and palmer and OCHO SINCO have a career day lions lose 9-3. 5 games?!?

C’mon guys, what kind of FANS (rootword FANATIC) would “hope” for a five game season? Haven’t you heard, the curse is OVER! K. Smith has all but promised us a post-season appearance; o.k. I’m having a little difficulty wrapping my mind around that one… but that’s only because I’m an old-school fan (been so longer that Smith has been alive) and the idea sounds a bit radical. But, sure, and why not? It means “Not For Long”, right? And so what if they laugh at me for saying “the Vi-Queens better watch out, ‘cause we’re winning the division this year”; hell, they laugh at me, anyway, just for being a LIons fan.
So, yeah, I’m down with the new (-ish, but let’s not think about Quit-na, o.k.?) “WE’RE GOING TO WIN FROM NOW ON” attitide. Sure! Get ready to roar, people, this Big Cat has once more regained his pride. The league will tremble for the next decade or so….HAHAHAHAHAHA, paybacks are a stitch.

I don't think anybody is hoping for 5 wins

That is just what their head is telling them. The hope is that they go 16-0 and win the Super Bowl, but realism quickly comes in and tells us that obviously won’t happen.

I'm not optimistic!

i really beleave that there are 10 to 11 very winnable games this year I know what I wrote up above and I was having fun with it also, but the Lions can and WILL compete for the Division this year. Heres my Very winnable games. with no joking around this time WK1: the saints have brees’ put some pressure on him and like all QB’s he makes mistakes, give him allday to look around and every QB will kill you look at the past 2 yaers in Detroit for that. We are going to pressure the QB’s this year so a Winnable game, I am not giving us this victory thou. WK2 and 3 are very winnable games at home the V-queens and the Skin-flutes are not all that, especially when you enter in the fact that that the skins have a disgruntled QB now Snyder made a bad move there! I am giving the lions both of these WINS LiONS are now 2-1. Winning is contageous WK 4: @ DA Bears it’s early in the season and soldier field isn’t going to be cold lions can go down there and win, remember I predict that we are going to sweep both the bears and the V-queens. so lions are now 3-1. WK 5: home to the Steelers going to be a tough head knocking game but it’svery hard to win on the road in the NFL I don’t tink we are going to win here but it is a winnable game. Lions are now 3-2 WK6: the fudge packers which isn't going to be froze yet so again div game could win but I don't think so. . .not this year. Now we are 3-3. WK 8: home to ST. loui loui. Very winnable game here may even be favored by now. Lions are now 4-3 Wk 9:bye now HasselBACK's Back has him on the bench again and the lions go out and Steal a win from them; remember new coach and no real RB. and the SEA-GULs are not that good to begin with. Lions are now 5-3. WK10: @minn I already said we are going to sweep them this year with or without FAVRE. Lions are now 6-3 WK 11:home to the Browns A ery winnable game again and at home we let MEGATRON GET OFF and this brings our record too 7-3 WK 12:home to the FUDGE PACKERS and we bllitz the hell out of ROGERS and win this one this time. record is now 8-3. WK 13: the bengals Don’t think we win here Palmer is back and ready for anything plus it’s getting late in the season and COLD we don’t play well in the COLD. record is now 8-4 WK14: @ baltimore sorry don’t give us much of a chance here could be a real bad blow out. 8-5 WK 15: Home to ZONA warner and Fitz Show Calvin and HOBBS who the best QB/WR duo is in the NFC and we lose at home. record is now 8-6 WK 16:@49ers I don’t need to say anything here we can win there we always play good in SF Lions win by a Hanson FG late we are now 9-6 WK17: DA Bears again we sweep them this year cause Cutler doesnt have his security blankets from Denver and plays like poop most of the year trying to learn a new system, that and he wont have the faithful fans behind him like he did in denver. Lions win And finish the season at 10-6 possibly division winners should be a wild-card team at least. Say what you want but thats how I see it.!!

Good call on Foote

He may have the most to prove on the defense. He could have gotten a better/longer deal elsewhere, but he came to Detroit where he has no real competition, will play every down, and is set up to have a monster season. If he does not have that monster season then everyone will claim he was a “product of the Steelers’ system” and he will fade into the night like so many other ex-Lions who never play another down after we sullied their good name.

Foote really is in a make or break year and has the ability to back it up. I agree he will have a monster season.

by ATL Lion on May 16, 2009 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see him making a lot of tackles

Schwartz and Cunnigham seem to want to funnel runs into the middle where I expect Foote to take most of the brunt. His size, instincts and experience should really help in this regard.

Falcons were a “for sure win” last year too.

No one that visits this site can accurately predict the future.

2-14 is just as much a possibility as 12-4, or 0-16 again. To look at the schedule team by team and predict losses and wins before the game happens…I don’t know, I don’t like it, so I don’t do it.

Making predictions only sets yourself up to get burned. Like my prediction that we would draft Curry #1…….

All I am saying is that there are always surprises in the season. Teams do better than expected, teams do worse. If all the other teams perform as expected in the next season, I think we end up with 5 wins. I think that there will be some surprises where teams do a lot worse than people expect and some teams will do better. Based on our schedule, I think there is a bigger chance that our opponents will regress to the mean and do worse than expected. I give us another two wins based on a couple teams doing much worse than expected. 7-9

Hope you’re right, but a somewhat safe assumption I’ll make is this…NFC North got damn good this off season(awaiting Favre arrival), It’ll be a tough schedule for Detroit.

I’de just like to see us win a bunch of division road games, I think I would be happy enough with that…

My thoughts

Lions Pre-Season Record: 1-3 (we play the browns)

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Cliff Avrill

Lions Reguar Season Record: 9-7 (10-6 Rogers really stinks in GB)

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Calvin Johnson

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Jullian Peterson

Best Rookie: Matt Stafford

Most Improved Player: Jeff Backus (what a good tight end will do for you)

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Opening Day (I think he is that good)

Position For 2010 Draft: 24 to 27

Nothing is ever for sure in sports. This is just a guess. What I really belive is that Minnesota is playing with 10 on offense. Rogers stinks in GB and the running game is worse. The bears bet the farm on an aging defense and a pouting teen quaterback. I feel good about our chances of taking the north. I am with Kevin Smith. We haven’t lost a game yet this season.

What you've all been waiting for...

Lions Pre-Season Record: 2-2

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Daniel Loper @ LG

Lions Reguar Season Record: 8-8

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: MEGATRONNNNNNN

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Julian Peterson

Best Rookie: ’Grew

Most Improved Player: Ernie Sims

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Well he’ll definitely start – I say week 12, vs. Aaron Rodgers and GB

Position For 2010 Draft: 15

Season MVP: Kevin Smith

You're putting a lot of stock into...

Culpepper. I say there’s a 50-50 chance of him being able to recapture any of his former self. Just can’t get myself jazzed for him. Stafford’s the future.

Also, what position would you have Alama-Francis win a spot at… DE or DT? I hope you’re right about him, but I think it’s unlikely he’ll be anything more than a role player on this team. Maybe a 3rd down DT.

by KDawg on May 18, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My Culpepper predictions weren't a dig at Stafford

he is the future. But it seems really up-in-the-air as to when that future begins exactly.

Looking at Culpepper, he’s finally had a full healthy offseason, he’s in great shape according to everybody, he’s back with Linehan, he knows this is his last shot, the offense will get a boost from some of the young players around him (Kevin Smith coming into his second year, Pettigrew will improve our blocking immediately), and he’s a QB who still has three Pro Bowls on his resume.

It’s like he’s got this small window of opportunity at the beginning of the season where everything is going for him.

I think 50-50 might be realistic, but I’m optimistic about him. He won’t be the same ex-retired, overweight, off-the-street QB we had last fall.

As for IAF finding a spot at DE or DT, I really dunno whether one is more likely than the other. There weren’t many depth players at all from the Marinelli era who look extremely likely to me to win a starting spot this year, but I felt I had to pick one.

Didn't take it..

as a dig at Stafford. I hope your right about Culpepper. I think they’ll win a few more games this season if he plays well.

Five Wins Sounds "Fan"tastic

Lions Pre-Season Record: Meaningless

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Foster at guard. Probably the second weakest position as of todays roster. If he can keep from jumping before the ball is snapped he could be a legitimate starter there (although I can’t believe he’s even back with the team again).

Lions Reguar Season Record: 5-12 That schedule is brutal! After what looks like a definite 0-6 start they can re-boot after the bye week. They should be STL at home, they should beat CLE at home, and on paper I give them the edge against SF on the road. Chances are they still lose one of those games and then win three games that are less obvious now, or flat out don’t make sense. For every Miami/Atlanta turnaround there’s always a GB/Sea like turn in the other direction.

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Calvin Johnson (The kid is a freak show, and will likely turn out to be one of the best WR of all time.)

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: I love the Ernie Sims picks, but JP has proven himself over the years and I think brings intangible things to the team that will make a HUGE difference over the next couple of seasons.

Best Rookie: Delmas seems like the consensus front runner, so just to be a little different I’ll go with Williams as a returner. The Lions have lacked any spark in their return game since Eddie Drummond, and I think Williams could make a huge difference and possibly provide a lift from an unexpected position. Delmas plays solid, but with the D-Line still struggling to get after the QB I think he’s forced to make plays rather than be a true “playmaker”.

Most Improved Player: Enter Ernie Sims…last year was such a debacle that no one on that defense could stand out as a playmaker. I think with the improvements made to that linebacking core Ernie has his best season as a pro and possibly sneaks in as one of the two pro-bowl linebackers on this team. I love Larry Foote too, but I think he spends a lot of time filling the gaps left by the defensive tackles in the run game and gets caught up in the shuffle statistically.

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: I preface this with my adamant opposition to what I see as the most likely scenario: Stafford starts Game 1 in New Orleans. I for one would like nothing more than to see Culpepper rise to the occasion and be the clear front runner for the job. My sinking suspision is, however, that the job is already Stafford’s to lose in spite of what coach and Mayhew are saying publicly. I would love to see him sit regardless of Culpepper or Stanton’s play, but I just don’t see it happening unless one of those two turns into an absolute stud in the off season.

Position For 2010 Draft: 6th/7th: STL is terrible with a capital “ICK”, Mangini has to break CLE down before it can be rebuilt, OAK is a laughing stock, Denver has issues all over the place, KC will struggle again, and I think the Seahawks are about to implode on offense.

Great post Mushy

I loved your predictions, especially the Williams one…very different.

READY 2 ROAR

Everyone seems so concerned with looking over optomistically at the upcoming season, but dammit, this is MY team! Here’s my wish-list for the Detroit Lions;
Kevin Smith AND Megatron go over 1000 yds. each, with a combined TD total around 20-25
Culpepper not only survives the season, but posts a career year, with a rating somewhere between 85 and 95
Our Defense does a complete 360 and ends up in the top 5 in ALL categories
We don’t settle for 4-6 wins (like all the “FAITHLESS” seem almost to prefer) but finish with 9-11 Ws and challenge the Vi-queens ffor the division, winding up in the playoffs regardless of winning the NFC north.

Now, there’s a leap off faith involved in this, but, hey,…I’ve seen far less probable things happen in this crazy world.

Love the optimism

And there’s no use starting up another loyalty discussion (although I don’t necessarily like being called ‘FAITHLESS’), I think most of your predictions are viable. However, the top 5 defence in all categories seems highly improbable. But hey…if it happens, you’ll look like a genius and I would gladly commend you.

Improvement

Lions Pre-Season Record: 2-2

Depth Player Who Will Win A Starting Spot During Preseason: Andre Fluellen. It’s amazing what happens when you actually give good young players playing time.

Lions Reguar Season Record: 2-14 (wins over STL and maybe CIN or CLE). It could be anywhere from 1-5 wins (or more?), but they’ll have to prove it. I’m not drinking the cool-aid this year. Been there, done that. They’ve got some players now, but also a lot of holes still.

Best Offensive Player For The Lions: Calvin Johnson 80+ catches, 1000+ Yds.

Best Defensive Player For The Lions: Ernie Sims 100+ tackles. Help at LB and turning him loose in Gunther’s system will allow Ernie to attack the offense and make plays.

Best Rookie: Brandon Pettigrew 50+ catches (no TE in the Marinelli Era had over 30, as far as I recall). TE’s will get lots of catches in Linehan’s system, and whichever QB is still healthy will need lots of dumpoffs with our paper mache offensive line. Louie Delmas also will have a good year.

Most Improved Player: Kevin Smith 1000+ Yds. (Honorable Mention: Cliff Avril 5+ sacks, and lots more QB pressures in increased playing time. Turn him loose)

Will Stafford Start This Season, If So, When?: Week 8, after the bye week, when the Lions are 0-6. Panic will set in. The media will clamor for Stafford to start. We’ve seen it all before. Ironically, we play STL that week, so Shiny will probably win. Then he’ll keep starting for a few weeks until he suffers the inevitible career-ending injury while being sacked for the 5th time in the game. Then the 2nd quarter starts.

Position For 2010 Draft: #2. Lions pass on Taylor Mays, pass on the elite OL prospects, and take some stiff.

Achilles Heel

We’ve got some good pieces. The D looks better on paper, but I want to see how they play. The starting CB spot opposite Buchanon looks like a big hole. I’m nervous about the DT’s, but with Grady Jackson demanding 2 blockers, Sammie Lee Hill hopefully getting into the NT rotation quickly, Chuck Darby moving to UT, and Fluellen hopefully winning the starting UT job, we should be ok. The receiving corps looks numerous but thin after CJ and Bryant Johnson, but I’m not worried about that with all the 2-TE sets we may run this year. The main Achilles Heel seems to be the offensive line. Without that, CJ and ‘Grew will get some catches, Kevin Smith will make yards on his own again……but we won’t be able to sustain consistent drives. Our QB’s will still get sacked a lot, pressured a lot, and maybe hurt. We need an O-line, badly. It’s like having a car without the engine. The car won’t go. We have other good pieces now, but the car still won’t go……this year. With a good draft that addresses the OL, we probably will make the playoffs in 2010……but not this year, because we didn’t address the O-line in the draft. Loper and all the returning OL from last year will have to prove that they are better. It seems like a mismatched group…..power drive blocking with Cherilus, Foster, and Ramirez; and zone blocking with Backus, Raiola, and Peterman. No matter which style you use, half of the line won’t be playing to their strengths.

by GRLion on May 20, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree about the CB's

We need to get Hood….and if not him maybe McCalister or Bly. I also feel that the depth at DT is thin, and it is already known that Grady Jackson will not be playing full time. Coach said that he will be used as a situational player. We need another FA DT in a bad way in my opinion, as well as a CB or two. Our O-Line will be the biggest concern going into the offseason, I am sure of that. However, they should be better this year, regardless of what happened last year. They were not all that bad 2 years ago. Yes, we need to begin to upgrade and rebuild there, but if they can continue to improve like they were at the end of last season, with Cherilus continuing to develop, Peterman gelling, and Loper hopefully making a big difference on the left side of the line, we might realize a big difference from last year with the new offense, different blocking schemes, and better play calling in a more unpredictable offense. It was very difficult for our line to stop opposing teams from sacking the QB last year because we could not establish a running gmae and opposing teasm were just teeing off with their pass rushers. Maybe we get better at run blocking this year, with the new scheme and better play calling…..keeping the defense on their heels instead of coming with everything but the kitchen sink on every play. It is not out of the question that our line’s bad play was not because of a lack of ability, but rather from poor play calling and a failed offensive scheme.

Sammie Lee Hill is not going to play this year, unless it is in garbage time, and I would just about bet the farm on that. He is way too raw and his athleticism alone will not make him into a player that can come in and do good. He needs time to learn technique before he should be playing in the NFL…..his level of competition at Stillman wasn’t much above high school. This is the NFL, and while the guy is most definitely big and fast, he would likely get trampled if he was thrown in there before he knew what he was doing. It is not out of the question, I suppose, that he may get some garbage time…..but he will not make an impact in my opinion. I think that the coaches and the front office must have believed that the foundation of our team (the offensive and defensive lines) were not the problem last year. Otherwise, why would they not have addressed those positions in the draft instead of drafting peripheral players? What if they drafted the way they did because they felt that our offensive and defensive lines were more solid that we think they are, and it was the floors and walls of the team that were weak? What if Loper makes a big difference on the left side of the line, so much that Backus improves significantly? Yes, there are question marks, but 2-14 is a very pessimistic prediction.

by KDawg on May 20, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'll agree with that

You make a lot of good points. 5-11 (or more) is certainly possible, but I’m waiting for them to prove it. The defense does look much improved except for the key holes at CB and the thin DT rotation (especially with Grady Jackson playing part-time). Hill may not be ready (hey, I was overoptimistic about something!). I hope Fluellen is ready; I just don’t like Darby, even at UT. Rod Hood and a free agent NT could fill those key holes and make us a lot better. Wait and see, I guess. The O-line DID play better late in the year (with more mobile QB’s) and the offensive play-calling under Coletto last year WAS oversimplified and obvious, so hopefully teams won’t pin their ears back and tee off on us every down this year. Are we sticking with zone blocking or switching to a power running game with more drive blocking? Do we have enough personnel on the OL to fit either blocking scheme? Are we leaving our TE’s in for pass plays to block most of the time (more coverage on the WR’s), or leaking them out on delay routes? Backus needs to protect the blind side (‘Grew will usually be on the strong side, so no help for Backus except when we run 2-TE formations). Loper has to be good at LG. Peterman or Ramirez (or whoever….Foster?) has to show improvement and consistency at RG. Raiola also needs to improve his run blocking. It could happen, though. I’m just being cautiously pessimistic…….still got the cool-aid hangover from the Marinelli Years.

by GRLion on May 20, 2009 2:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I understand

And you’re right…..at least you were overly optimistic about Hill….lol. From what I understand, we will utilize both zone blocking and different blocking schemes this year. I think the difference will be that the coaching staff will play to the strengths of our players rather than sticking to one scheme. I agree that Backus needs to improve on blocking guys who are trying to run around him. But it he has better help to his right, he will be able to take an extra step outside and funnel the guys back to the middle…..maybe? I believe they will leave the TE’s in there to run block, as that is one of the strengths of Pettigrew. I agree that our run blocking was suspect last year, but like I said I am not so sure it was because of a lack of ability. It’s fine for you to be cautiously pessimistic…..as that is your opinion. I’m just letting you know what I think too….:o)

Have they signed

any of the draft picks besides Stafford yet? Haven’t been able to find anything

by CR on May 20, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not that I know of CR

I assume they are going to evaluate these guys in the OTA’s and get the ones they want for the season signed before pre-season sometime. They have just short of 3 months before the first pre-season game, so they have some time. I would expect to hear something about Delmas and Pettigrew signing pretty soon, or at least before any of the rest.

by KDawg on May 20, 2009 6:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thats what

I was thinking also, that they would not waste a bunch of time gettin Delmas and Pettigrew signed.

by CR on May 20, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lewand

has been pretty solid about getting our picks in for training camp I would have to bet that he sticks to that rule and gets em signed. But you also have to look at which picks have signed that were drafted before them becuase agents wait for that to judge what they think thier clients should recieve. We should see the #2 and 3 get signed here soon since Stafford is already signed and it should spiral from there.

I think he will produce under The Schwartz

There hasnt been alot of talking about him, which I think is good. Their not trying to hype him up, their just working with him.
