NFC North: Views from Lions Fans
Hey everyone,
I just wanted to get some input on how Detroit Lions fans will think the NFC North will shake out this year.
I'm a lifelong Bears fan, but I definitely think that the Lions have gotten better this offseason. I was surprised when they took Stafford over Curry though, that guy is going to be a beast.
I think Detroits offense is actually pretty good (man I wish the Bears had Calvin Johnson), but their defense needs some work.
This is how I see the NFC North
Chicago Bears: 11-5
I believe that the acquisition of Cutler will help the Bears win at least 2 more games this year.
Minnesota Vikings: 9-7
The Vikings have a great D and a solid running game, but even the addition of Percy Harvin won't really help when the QB play is so terrible.
Green Bay Packers: 8-8
Growing pains from a new defensive scheme and injuries on offense will hamper the Packers (bur I see them doing much better 2010 Season)
Detriot Lions: 5-11
I think the current roster gets sick of losing and buys into the new coach. It's really embarassing to lose that many games in a row, which I think will motivate the players during OTAs and minicamp. Detroits D ends up losing close games. Calvin Johnson makes another big leap this year though. I think Detroit wins more games with Culpepper than with Stafford. I think Culpepper has something left to prove and he can get you points in the red zone. If the Lions rush Stafford (he is no Matt Ryan) I see Detroit losing more games this year.
Thanks

You really think your Bears are going to be 11-5 huh?
I actually have them just above the Lions in our division -
GB: 10-6
MIN: 9-7
CHI: 8-8
DET: 6-10
I guess… I definitely give our Leo’s credit, they have to potential to win 8 games this year.. The Bears D isn’t what it used to be (from what I see at least). I lived in Chi-Town last year, and watching Urlacher was kinda sad. Forte was strong, but Cutler is going to win you guys maybe one or two more games this year at best.. You talk about Minny not having any WRs…. You guys are actually worse off. The NFC North is much stronger than it was last year, and I think you’re understating Dom Capers, Kevin Greene, and the new look GB 3-4 (as much as I hate to say it). BJ Raji is not going to be fun for any of us.
I’d say good luck to the Bears, but I personally hate them. :) Good luck to you, as a fan though. This year is going to be interesting.

those look like pretty good predictions
But we’ll have to disagree. In my post I was saying that Minnesota has good WR’s but they do not have solid QB play. I agree that the Bears do not have any proven receivers yet, but Hester was looking a lot better at the end of the year. Not to mention the TE’s Greg Olsen and Dez Clark are very good pass catchers. Not to mention Forte.
As for potential good WR’s we have Cutler’s old WR at Vandy Earl Bennett who pretty much just studied the playbook last year. We also drafted Juaquin Iglesias (Oklahoma), Johnny Knox (ACU, smaller school, really fast guy) and a 7th rounder (Derek Kinder Pitt, probably STs, maybe gets playing time if injuries)
It’s not just the Cutler Trade, the Bears Oline was looking really bad last year, and we’ve completely retooled it (Orlando Pace, Kevin Schaffer, Frank Omiyale) and we have a healthy Chris Williams (moving to RT).
Our defense has looked bad, but that’s because we haven’t gotten any pressure from the front 4. I think this will probably change this year at least, because we have 3 DE’s in contract year, and athletes seem to play better then ;). We also drafted 2 DE’s, including 1 that Mel Kiper called the steal of the draft. Not to mention a really good Dline Coach (I don’t know if it’s allowed to mention his name on this blog)
As for underestimating the Packers I’ve looked back and Dom Capers has done wonders, but for some reason I just don’t think that their players fit the same profiles as the other teams did. While they picked up Raji and the LB, the only other guy in their front 7 that looks good for it is Kampman.
The Bears resigned Kevin Jones and then signed Michael Gaines, as former Lions when they were healthy what did you think of them?

Gaines couldn't make it in Buffalo

Bears are going to use him as an H-Back in some sets
Good idea, it’ll maximize his abilities.
We never did that; our H-back is Fitzsimmons. Gaines was being paid to be our #1 TE.

Oh, Kevin Jones
I have 2 Kevin Jones jerseys (one from VTech) hanging in my room currently. He’s awesome. People around here hate on him alot, but he’s a solid, all around runner, with decent speed and tackle breaking ability.
Gaines… Should have been better than he was. He came to us from Buffalo ‘wanting to be the man’ so if he pans out for you, you got a steal. He’s still young, so two decent pickups, IMO.

I think Forte should handle most of your carries though, I was very impressed with him last season.

The only knock
on K Jones is that he always seems dinged up, Everyone of us on here remembers him running over Ray Lewis a few years ago, Jone is the shit but ust can’t stay healthy, and I would say that he’s def. going to be backing up Forte and justgiving him a breather, I can’t see why he would do outstanding in a 3rd down or goalline situation after forte run’s it down there. But I still don’t see Da Bears winning the division, I can’t see them above 3rd place in the div. But hey I didn’t see them going to the championship game a few years ago either.

Cutler had a top 3 O Line in Denver
He has a bottom 10 in Chicago. Almost as bad as ours. I don’t buy Pace being much more than a shadow of his former glory. His injury problems will probably sideline him as often as he is on the field.
Cutler also had some real receivers in Denver, something everyone else has pointed out that you seem to be lacking in Chicago. Sure, some of those late round wild swings you guys took at WR might stick, but I would be surprised if more than 1 is on the team day 1. Adding Gaines? He washed out everywhere he played because of his fumbles. I don’t think his blocking is good enough to make the move to FB, but what do know.
The one thing you guys have that Denver didn’t is a running game. I hope Forte is ready to take a beating this year.
I like the move of grabbing Cutler. I think the Bears FO decided that the defense has 1—maybe 2—more seasons in it before it becomes mediocre/bad. They have a shot right now before going into rebuilding. If only they could have grabbed a WR to help out.

Pretty close to what I think
Johnny, I think you are pretty close to being right on for the most part but I think where I disagree is the top two teams. I think the Vikings are going to more along the lines of 11-5 and the Bears will be 9-7. My reasoning for this is I agree that Cutler will win 2 more games for the Bears this year by himself but the defense is getting old and Cutler has no one to throw to (OK Hester is not bad but he is not a #1 receiver).
by qbdoyle1 on May 19, 2009 2:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Part of it could be wishful thinking on my part
but I feel really good about the team this year.
I also think that the Williams Wall of the Vikings will most likely be suspended the first 4 games of next season (which just so happens to be probably the 4 easiest game stretch of the season).
I think the TE’s, Forte, and one of the receivers will step their games up. The buzz around Chicago is amazing and it’s going to be interesting these next couple of years.

I felt good about detroit last year coimg off a 7-9 season in which they started 6-2 then had an undefeated pre season.

Someone has to do it.
Lions 9-7 Culpepper makes a come back
Bears 9-7 Lose tie breaker
Vikings 8-8 Only if Favre returns
Ghost Team
Packers 5-11 Defensive change takes to long to gel
I hate the Packers so I threw in a ghost team so they would be 5th in a 4 team division.

Even with Harvin
Cutler has nobody to throw to. He had Royal, Marshall, and Scheffler to throw to in Denver, and I think those guys made him look better than he is in reality…..just my opinion. The Bears do not have a Marshall. Percy Harvin is probably going to be pretty good, maybe even good enough to take some attention off of Hester. If that is the case, Forte and the aging defense may be able to win them some games with Cutler supplemeting the running game with a decent passing attack. I think they go 9-7 at best, but again that is just my opinion. I see the Pack going 8-8 as they will struggle with their transition to the 3-4….so I agree with you there. With a healthy Favre, I see the Vikings as the best team in the Division and the team that has the best chance to go 10-6. If Favre can play without pain (emphasis on IF), then unfortunately I say they win the division hands down. As for the Lions….I fully expect 7 wins. They are going to surprise everyone. I think they have the potential to win 9 games….and no that is not the kool-aid speaking. I see them getting wins against Green Bay and Chicago this season, and maybe even splitting with Minnesota if they can bottle up AP like they did last year on Dec. 7th (I was there, and the Lions had opportunites to win that game). If they go 3-3 in the NFC North, I see them possibly beating the Redskins, the Rams, and the Browns at home, and possibly the 49ers, Bengals, and Seahawks on the road. If that happens, they will be 9-7 and the standings will look like this:
MIN: 10-6
DET: 9-7
CHI 9-7
GB: 8-8
I give the Lions the edge in the tiebreaker between them and the Bears, right or wrong. The Lions could easily be in a wildcard position after this season, and i wouldn’t cout them out. I do not think that the rest of the teams in the NFC North are as strong as alot of people see them, and I definitely think that the teams I mentioned outside of the division are beatable. Who knows…..maybe the Lions shock the Saints in week 1 and lose to the Redskins or 49ers…..anything can happen. I do not see it as unrealistic to expect that this year’s Lions team will win 7 games, and I think it is absolutely possible that they can win 9. We’ll soon find out.

I still have yet to be sold on Cutler
I think Chicago gave up way too much to get him. Seriously, what has he really accomplished? Pro Bowl? His team tanked down the stretch last year (after most of the votes were in). Blame it on Defense if you want, but how many 3 and outs put their Defense in bad positions to begin with? I don’t buy the argument that Chicago will bring out his better side. Does Chicago really have that much better of a team to put around him than Denver did? I don’t see it. The last time Cutler faced the Lions? Yeah, whatever. Ramsey came in and looked spectacular. Go Lions! and Go Wings!
by James L on May 19, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Totally agree
Cutler is good, but he was NOT worth what Chicago gave up for him.
I think it was more of a fan pleasing move than anything. They got a great QB that they haven’t had in ages… It’s just too bad for them that they cost themselves a good supporting cast.
Not to mention they’ve already said they had concerns about his drinking habits (in Chicago, no less) and with him being a diabetic, he better be on his best behavior.
by Nate D. on May 19, 2009 2:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
um
it’s fine if diabetics drink, they just have to watch the blood sugar more closely.
I would know since I’m a student pharmacist.
As for Jay Cutler being worth the amount of picks only time will tell. I think he’s worth it. I think he keeps plays alive with his feet and he has extremely good deep ball accuracy. At the very least it will allow Forte to run without 8 men in the box.
Jerry Angelo is actually horrible with first round picks, it’s honestly about 40 success rate. So I guess I’d rather get a guaranteed thing than take a risk on a college QB.
Let me break it down further. First round QB’s have about a 50% bust rate. Let’s say that the Bears draft 2 QBs and one of them is a bust, that’s 2 1st rounders. The 3rd rounder was alright to give up because we got a complimentary 3rd rounder for Bernard Berrian. Then we gave up Orton, whom we don’t really need since we have Cutler. Not to mention we got a 5th rounder in return.
Overall I thought this draft class was weak, next years looks to be amazing.
Go Blackhawks! ; )

What I meant was
That I’m pretty sure that Cutler isn’t out checking his BS level when he’s partying at the bars downtown, and seeing as he’s just recently acquired it, it’s considered a concern.
Per WebMD:
People with diabetes should follow these alcohol consumption guidelines:
Do not drink more than two drinks of alcohol in a one-day period. (Example: one alcoholic drink = 5-ounce glass of wine, 1 1/2-ounce “shot” of liquor or 12-ounce beer).
I’m sure Cutler is drinking less than that, right?
I’m just saying that he’s under the public eye a helluva lot more in Chicago than he was in Denver. We’ll see if he can man up to the task. I hope, for you guys, that he does.
by Nate D. on May 19, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he actually has
type 1 diabetes, which means he has had it since he was a child. It’s just that he was recently diagnosed with it (it kind of makes all of his earlier feats more impressive). Cutler actually has his glucometer with him at all times. For instance when he was at the Pro Bowl by the pool when Peyton Manning pushed him in the pool, are ruined the glucometer in his pocket. During football games now he checks his BS 4 times. If someone is really intune with their body they can tell what level their BS is without even checking it.
I’m fine with Cutler going out to Hub 51 (named after one of the all time great Bears) drinking a few beers, hanging out with teammates (apparently he and Greg Olsen are now best friends), and making out with hotties like Julia Allison. Bears QB’s have a long tradition of drinking and being rowdy (Jim McMahon and Kyle Orton are recent examples).

Don’t get me wrong. Nothing’s set in stone. But I won’t make excuses for Detroit if they lose. Refs will traditionally overlook an extra player attempting to exit the ice, especially when that player was not involved in the play. Look again at your players turnover. It only took 3 players to capitalize on it. None of them were involved in a line change. Furthermore, I watched the play on the link you provided 4 times and I couldn’t find your 6th man.

Lol
When line changes happen, too many men isn’t called if the play is away from the change. And to say that they wouldn’t have scored if they had 5 people on the ice is ridiculous. By the time the change happened, the 3-on-1 was already set up.

Nice Post, Johnny.
I think the Bears are the best team in the Central on paper. The defense was much better with Mike Brown in the middle at Safety. He was one of the best I had ever seen, it was like he was made for the cover 2. The last I saw he was still a free agent. I think the Bears made the move for Cutler because the defense was getting old and they may have a window of a year or two that they will be playing great defense. This may explain picking up an older Orlando Pace. This looks like a future is now move. Good Luck with your being a Bears Fan.
I was hoping for big things out of Michael Gains, but he did not do anything special for us. Kevin Jones is another story altogether. He was banged up a lot. I’m not sure if he had problems with the coaches that accounted for his reduced playing time. When he played, he show a lot of grit. I would have been happy to continue to give him a chance, and see if we couldn’t work him into a recieving threat as well as a normal set back. He was not my choice for running near the goal line, but he would break a nice run every once and a while.
The thing about the Lions that excites me is that we seems to be playing to our stengths instead of making our players fit a scheme. We have at least 6 new defensive starters. The fact that we will be playing something other than sit back and wait on defense should make Sims play like the star he is. The 3 linebackers of Foote, Peterson, and Levy all look like they want to hit somebody. With the new safety Delmas playing so aggresivly I think that our defense could be the surprise of the season.
I am excited about Kevin Smith. He showed some good play last year and I am anxious to see what he can do in a more balanced attack. Backus has always been a favorite of mine. For the last few years the leg injury he suffered seems to have slowed him down in getting out on the speed rushers. Playing a regular offense with a tight end to help out before going into his pattern will make Backus that much better. Just getting a chance to run block a little will improve the entire offensive line.
I am excited for Lions football again. I may be dreaming, but I am putting Detroit at 9 and 7, and I don’t think any team in the North will win more than 10.
Perhaps :
Bears, 10-6
Lions, 9-7
Vikes, 8-8
Pack, 6-10

I can't see the Bears winning 11
For two reasons:
First, I don’t buy Cutler as a great QB savior and I don’t think he’ll be any better in Chicago than he was in Denver. In fact, I think he’ll be worse. The offensive systems may be similar, but Chicago doesn’t have the personnel (read: receivers) to pull it off.
Second, besides Cutler (and sure, Pace), they didn’t really make any significant offseason additions. They gutted their draft for Cutler, and have mostly the same starters returning from last year’s 9-7 campaign.
I think you are, however, very close in your Lions prediction.
Vikes: 10-6 (Jackenfels keep them from being “elite”)
Pack: 9-7 (Rodgers really taking control; Capers’ 3-4 an improvement over last year.)
Bears: 9-7 (See above)
Lions: 6-10 (This would be a very solid rebuilding year record IMO.)

I guess
when you look at the Bears schedule statistically it’s the easiest schedule in the entire NFL. I think that there is a very good chance the Bears win 11 games because last year we lost many very close games (Tampa Bay, Atlanta) and that it’s not just adding a QB. A good QB makes your receivers look a lot better, we’ll see when the season comes around.
I think that our receivers are average, but our TE’s are amazing and Forte is probably one of the top backs in the league.
I’m more worried about the strongside linebacker and the FS positions (I truly believe our DLine will be good this year, which will make our entire defense much better).

Still mostly the same starters as last year.
However, there are some very good offensive weapons. You do have solid TEs in Olsen and Clark. Also, there’s no denying that Forte is a very good back, but let’s give him another season or two before we start calling him one of the best in the league.
I don’t like the “easy schedule” argument though. Judging how tough the year will be based on last season’s records is kind of a pointless exercise given the volatile nature of this league. As a case in point, you have to remember that the Bears’, Packers’, and Vikings’ “strength of schedule” are all somewhat deflated due to the Lions going winless last season. That will certainly not be the case this year.
Obviously, nobody can predict how the season will pan out. Given what I see though, I still wouldn’t put the Bears in the 11-win range. This isn’t to say they couldn’t be the best team in the division—I don’t think there is a clear-cut front-runner right now—but I still see them having largely a repeat of last year.

+1
the 1 thing that I beleave could save Cutler is that he Made sher. look good in Denver and I think that both of Da Bears TE’s are way better at Rec than anything he had in Denver, But still think Cutler is going to strugle in a new Place that (if he starts out poorly) is going to be booooooo’d off the field so fast. And again I just don’t see what everyone else see’s in him he hasn’t done anything spectacular yet has he????

Neither of the Bears' TEs are as good as Brandon Marshall
Maybe Olsen

HA
The only problem is Marshall isn’t a TE….but you are without a doubt correct that Olsen and Clark are nowhere near as good as Brandon Marshall. Olsen is as good as Scheffler, probably better…..I’ll give them that.
by KDawg on May 20, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm aware of the position discrepancy
I was speaking on a talent-basis… Olsen could be as good of a target to Cutler as Marshall was to him in Denver, albeit without the downfield threat.
I didn’t want to discount the Bears too much; they lack talent @ WR, but their TE’s are both forces to be reckoned with.

I think Olsen moreso

Cutler could come out and go 0-5

I don’t think the Bears will start 0-5, I see it being 4-1 (Pitt.)

Understandably so
I think most people in Detroit would be singing a different tune if we had gotten Cutty and drafted Jason Smith at #1…
Short of him wanting another trade, you guys finally got your QB – it’s good that the fans are getting what they wanted after such a long drought.
Sometimes that’s more important than the W-L column.

how is the offense better
than the defense? we need a better d-tackle od defense. on offense we need a new LT, LG, RG, and center. sure the offense has CJ, ’Grew, and K. Smith, but on defense we have Sims, Foote, Peterson, Delmas, and Avril

I mainly am going on what I saw last year
it seemed that the offense scored points but that the defense did not keep opposing teams out of the endzone.
Most of those names seem to be new for defense too.

Are you kidding?
Dude…..Buchanon has been solid for his entire career. He’s never been to the Pro Bowl, but any corner that is getting close to 50 tackles most years when he is the starter is doing a pretty good job in my book. He doesn’t have alot of INTs because teams do no throw the ball in his direction too much. When they do, he likes to take the ball to the house when he picks it off. He’s versatile enough to play left or right cornerback. He has only started all 16 games once in his career (not sure if it was injuries or what) and that was last year. He had 48 tackles, 4 assts, a forced fumble and a recovery, 6 pass defenses, 2 INTs and a INT return for a TD playing left cornerback for Tampa. Ronde Barber only had 4 INTS, 1 TD, and 65 tackles and he went to the Pro Bowl.

I like Buchanon and I think he can do some real good here, unlike Bodden, who I also had high hopes for (although, he was in a sticky spot here and he’ll probably do very well in Pats-land).

Good post Johnny
I have to agree that I do think that Chicago can win the division. The thing is… there are a lot of “if’s” and “but’s” for every team in the NFC North. This is truly a wait and see situation for this division. I personally think it will shake out a little something like…
Chicago 10-6
Minnesota 8-8
Green Bay 7-9
Detroit 5-11
With Chicago, the questions are:
1) Can Cutler find someone to throw to… and if he doesn’t, will he cry and want to be traded?
2) Does the defense bounce back from a subpar season and can they find a safety to play well? I think that the defense is on it’s way down (age), but right now… is still easily a top ten defense.
3) Is Forte for real? I think he is, but we’ll see for sure when opposing defenses start scheming to stop him. Chicago’s O-line seems to be a little in flux, so we’ll see what happens. Hopefully, (for you – not Lion’s fans) you guys get Williams back at tackle and he’s not a bust. But again, Forte will have to avoid the sophomore slump that many rookies fight. Kevin Smith will have to overcome this as well for the Lions.
Minnesota’s problems are well-documented:
1) Quarterback… will the “great” Brett Favre grace the NFC North with his presence once again. Either way, I’m not sure it answers the Viking’s QB problem. If he doesn’t, the great Sage Rosenfels will probably start over Jackson. I like that option!
2) Will the Williams Bros. be suspended for the first four games of the season? That could lead to a shaky season start. Otherwise, the defense is solid… probably best in the NFC North.
3) Will “All Day” stay injury free. If he does… that’s scary. But history dictates he’ll miss a game or two. Hopefully, he misses the two Lion’s games!
The mighty Green Bay Butt-Packers:
1) It’s all about the defense and how well Capers can install the 3-4. I am still a bit skeptical that their roster translates well and I think it’ll take a year to get it right. They’ll have a rookie NT and MLB and Kampman has to move to OLB. Will he be as productive as DE? I don’t know.
2) Will Rodgers bounce back from an iffy finish to the ‘08 season or is his confidence shaken? He’s still living in the shadow of Favre and the fans will give him a very short leash before the media crucifixion begins. He seems pretty sturdy, but everyone collapses when the pressure get too bad.
Ah…. the Leos. Where to start?:
1) They should have a vastly improved defense, but just how improved is the question. New coaches, new scheme, new players… how will it all mesh? Right now, no one knows. On paper, it looks good. I think the two biggest defensive questions are pressure on the quarterback (as Schwartz loves to drop seven in coverage, the front four is the key) and the deep ball man coverage. The corner upgrades are suspect, although this secondary looks better suited for the run defense than last year’s version.
2) What Culpepper will we see… 2004 or 2008? Sure, he’s lost some weight and looks like he’s in good physical shape, but the part we can’t see is the inside of that knee. What, if any, additional mobility has his offseason regimine added? If the answer is none, he’ll probably struggle behind a still weak O-line. If he struggle, the calls for Stafford will be loud and come at a feverish pace.
3) The O-line has been a weak point throughout the Millen years. This year, we are again hoping scheme helps, as most of the starters are returning. Cherilus should be much improved and Loper is a big question mark. More than anything, how does this group block for Kevin Smith? Pettigrew will help the run game, but the focus should be the guards, so he can effectively run in the inside. Loper and Peterman have a lot to prove.
All in all, the Lions will be a much better team in ’09. I think that they should enjoy a 5 to 7 win swing in comparison to last year. Although that would not be enough to win the division this year, watch out for us in 2010. There is no reason not to think that the future of the NFC North belongs to Detroit. Watch yourselves, Bears fans!

Great Post, Drew
I agree. Great detail and analysis. The defense does look better on paper, but how much better? Will teams exploit Henry/King at CB? (Rod Hood would be a big help plugging this hole) I’m curious about what style of defense our Lions will run. Will it be Schwartz’s defense dropping LB’s in coverage (is it much different than the dreaded Tampa 2?), or will it be Gunther Cunningham’s style with attacking LB’s and more frequent blitzes? It could be a mix of both, but the bottom line is we need a lot more pressure on the enemy QB’s, especially with questions at one of the starting CB spots. Offensively, our O-line seems key, especially the guards. Pettigrew and a 2nd TE will help Backus and help Kevin Smith run off-tackle or bounce outside, but the TE’s won’t help on inside runs. When Kevin Jones was here, he learned that you can’t just bounce everything outside like you did in college. You need to be able to run inside also and slash though the defense, and the guards and the center are the key. Are they good enough?

I am thinking along those same lines (rec'd comment)
There are a lot of If’s and Buts, which can make predictions waaay off. For example if Aaron Rodgers gets seriously injured I don’t see the Packers winning more than 4 games.
About Cutler wanting to stay here, he was on 670 the Score the other day. He and his Dad were talking about how it was a dream come true for him to play for the Bears. Cutler grew up in Indiana and has been a Bears fan his entire life. His Dad talked about how great it was that he could see his son more. It really worked out for the best that he got to come here.
The Defense has a few things going against it (age, lack of FS, and a SS LB), but what differs from this year and last year is coaching. Lovie Smith is taking over the role of DC. Marinelli is DLine coach. Jon Hokes is the secondary coach. Our main problem has been not getting consistent pressure from our front four the past two years. We’ve got several players in contract year and we’ve got 2 new rookies who may be able to contribute. The GM decided to take some home run swings with this past draft. We’re in a win now mode, so he took guys with high ceilings that aren’t safe bets.
I think Forte is for real. His running style and sure hands aren’t flukes. As for a Sophomore slump, he seems too dedicated to go through one. Not to mention the Coaching staff has already said he will be doing less reps on offense (last year he touched the ball a higher percentage than any RB, receptions and rushing, in the league, the next two were AP and Turner).
I think the Lions will do better this year. Anytime your team wins 5 more games than the previous year is a great improvement. I think if the fans expect a Miami or an Atlanta turnaround they will probably be disappointed though.

I think your predictions are pretty spot on
But I’d probably switch the Bears and Vikes around. I’m not gonna go into details since everyone else has, and Drew pretty muched summed up everything you could ever need to know about these teams this year but I see the Vikes coming out with the division. AP is just to dangerous and their D is very strong. Here’s hoping for a Lion’s victory in the NFC North though.

I actually agree on the Packers
Not much was done during free agency and I just don’t see them making any improvement while switching Defensive schemes. B.J. Raji was a good start but one rookie isn’t going to solve your problems. I disagree with your Bears prediction though. I just don’t see what Cutler has truthfully accomplished. He’s going from one team that collapsed around him to another team that could be the same way. Not to mention the added pressure of being under a harsh Chicago microscope and his obvious sensitivity.

Listen, I hate GB, but...
This is currently GB’s defensive depth chart:
DLE Cullen Jenkins
NT B.J. Raji
DRE Justin Harrell
LOLB Aaron Kampman
LILB A.J. Hawk
RILB Clay Matthews
ROLB Nick Barnett
LCB Charles Woodson
RCB Al Harris
SS Atari Bigby
FS Nick Collins
Their D is at least as good as the Bears. Everyone keeps saying things about their LBs…. Kampman is a baller. Even if he doesn’t turn into a stud OLB, he’s going to be rock solid there. You’ve got the long hairs in the middle, and Nick Barnett (another baller) at the other OLB position. Their secondary is somewhat old, but they have Bigby and Collins @ S. Their D-Line has Raji, but their ends could definitely see improvement.
This defense is going to be shitty to play against, guys. If GB gets a running game going at some point in the year, it’s gonna be interesting. They’re only slightly worse off than Minny, who has a D that (talent-wise) is a half-step up, and they have AP. GB has the passing game and what is going to be a solid D, so the NFC North is going to be nuts this year.
With Detroit stepping up their game, I see Chi-Town as the odd man out. New QB, no recievers, old D… Just my observation.
by Nate D. on May 21, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Kampman and Barnett are the only 2 players that worry me. Their D-line doesn’t really impress me. I assume B.J. Raji will become a great player but not for a couple of years. It’s going to take awhile for their Defense to become anything to worry about, but when it does, I hope the Lions Offense will be right there to give it to them. Just my opinion.
by James L on May 21, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I still think that GB is going 5-11, Look at all high level rookie NT in the NFL, they all struggled and were overpowered in their first year, and then with Average DEs any team will be able to run against them, let alone throw with no pass rush. I don’t see them doing that great.
by lordbobthegreat on May 22, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not to paraphrase your comment, but
do you really think that just because they have a (very highly touted) young NT in their scheme that that’s going to kill their defense?
Not to mention the fact that they have a real strong offense, if (like I said) they can pull their running game together. I don’t think that any team in the North is going to come out and just dominate… I think that the divisional games are going to take a toll on all of us. I just think that GB is going to come out better than the other 3 teams in that respect. Very well coached team with a lot of talent. I give Aaron Rodgers (a former 1st rounder in his own right) a lot more credit this year than he had last year.

Back to the black and blue
If teams stay healthy (especially Detroit because we lack depth) I see two teams go 7-9 and two teams go 9-7. If Minnesota gets Favre I see 10 or 11 win season and he wins the division for them because he doesn’t have to carry that team as much as he did the Jets.
