Foote to Visit Lions Wednesday

Per the Free Press, it appears that Larry Foote will indeed meet with the Lions on Wednesday.  This could be a good sign that the Lions are moving quickly and appear to be the first to schedule a visit.  Let's hope that they don't allow him to leave without a contract.

From the Free Press:

Free agent linebacker Larry Foote will visit the Lions on Wednesday, his agent, Ken Kremer, said in an e-mail today.

Let's all cross our fingers...

UPDATE: Apparently, Foote has already met with officials today and there is no word on whether he's signed a contract.

Foote

This would be a awsome pick-up for the Lions defense. Not only bring in a MLB that the lions desperatly need but also bring in a vet, with a winning attitude to a defense that needs a lot of help….cross our fingers for sure

Foote

They might have to over pay a little but I agree, if this is going to happen he can’t leave with out a contract.. GET IT DONE !!!!!

Will it take

a three or four year contract to get him signed? Schwartz’s comments about building through the draft scares me a little,I totaly agree with him but does that mean he won’t step out and sign a 29 year old to a three or four year deal?

Building through the Draft

The coments that I have heard and read is that the first priorty is to build through the draft. That’s how the good teams do it. However, both Schwartz and Mayhew’s comments have been that they understand that after the draft there will be holes to fill from free agency until they can get the talent leve up to where it needs to be.

they wont have to over pay

he wants to come home to Detroit, unless they offer him a low ball deal i believe he signs.

Foote did say...

if a better deal comes along, he’ll take it. I don’t want the Lions to back the Brinks truck up for him. I heard Indy and KC are also interested in him. Hopefully he’ll take a fair deal here.

Foote will sign with Detroit

As long as they offer him the same amount of money he was making in Pittsburgh. Thanks Drew!! I was hoping to hear something about Foote today. I have my serious doubts that the Colts or Chiefs will even get a chance to negotiate with Larry Foote. He wants to come home, and as long as the Lions front office doesn’t F it up, he will be in a Lions uniform this season.

LB Corps

So, from last years roster does everyone get cut except for Sims and Lewis?

I like the revamping of the LBs, but what are we doing for the secondary?

I wonder if this move would setup the Lions to move Peterson since he is on the last year of his contract.

Henry and Buchanon

They’ve been added. Delmas is there and will be an immediate threat from the look of it. It’s shaping up decently.

If we land Foote...

…we could surprise people this year. I’m not saying Super Bowl, but perhaps a turn around like Miami had. Perhaps.

My prediction is 3 wins. With the upgraded secondary, and LB corps (if we sign Foote)

We win 5-6 games, anymore would be pushing it.

2010 with the addition of Ndamukong Suh we can win 8+

Agreed

I know it’s around this time when the Kool-Aid is flowing, but we have to be realistic people. This team is not built for a turn around anywhere near the Dolphins’ one.

Question:

Why do people keep saying that? I’m not convinced they are ready for a run yet either, but what exactly set the Dolphins so far apart from where we are now?

1-15 rather than 0-16
New coaching regime
Brought in a guy who never really made it @ QB
Decent running game
They (Fins) had NO wr’s to speak of for their subpar QB
Defense had who? Jason Taylor? Was released the following year..
They drafted Jake Long… Great addition, but ok? Big deal.

If you’re using the Dolphins analogy, I don’t see why they wouldn’t be ready to do the same thing. I can see a comparison between us and Atlanta being shot down, but the Fins aren’t that good fellas…

And don’t give me that Bill Parcells shit.. That made about a 5% difference in their team, IMO.

PS -

The Dolphins used the Wildcat system to suprise teams, and scored alot of points that way. A gimmick offense – apparently that’s what we need?

by Nate D. on May 5, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Until...

the Lions address our offensive line in a serious manner(which we did not do this year in the draft or FA) I am downgrading my level of Fandom for the Detroit Lions. I will not BUY Lions merchandise until I see actual RETURNS on my emotional investment before I pad the Ford’s bank account. I’m not a fair weather fan trust me, but I dont take betrayal and disrespect lightly when Ford drafts a 2nd team all-sec QB 1st for $42 million guaranteed just to sell more tickets

Holy Crap...

I3usdriver that is exactly how I feel too. We need to start from the inside out, and our o-line has always been terrible. Nice post.

Please no gimmick offense

The Lions tried a gimmick offense (the run and puke) and it got them nothing. (Some would say the west coast offense is a gimmick).

Stick to smash mouth football. Understand that the expectations are low for this year, use it to build the foundation of success.

by MGLion on May 5, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully it didn't come across that way

What I was saying is that their gimmick offense caught alot of teams in their division off guard, and that, more than anything, set them apart from us, IMO.

Lions are just as capable as the Fins were to do that ESPECIALLY in our divison vs. the AFC East.

by Nate D. on May 5, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

The Dolphin's record was very misleading.

They lost five games by three points and one by five. Lions? One by two and two by four points.

MIami gave up 27.3 points per game and finished 23rd in yards allowed.
Lions gave up 32.3 points per game and were 32nd in yards allowed.

Offensively they were almost identical. They both went through three QBs and finished with 16.7 PPG scored.

Miami had a ton of injuries, losing Ronnie Brown was a killer. Lions were pretty much injury free. No key injuries to our best players. Miami had a much tougher schedule in 2007 than us last year.

Miami had a much better talent base than us. Let’s just try and be realistic, eh?

by NorthLeft12 on May 5, 2009 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

You didn't really make a point

I wasn’t comparing Miami to us last year. I’m comparing Miami last year to us this year.

If you think we’re going to be last in YA again, then I guess that’s your opinion. I think we’ll have a comprable statistic as you stated regarding PPG & YA. Ronnie Brown was (once again) only as effective as he was due to the Wildcat.

Miami did not have marquee talent pretty much anywhere. Maybe some on the offensive side of the ball (hmm… sounds like Detroit) but they played hard and won games no one thought they would.

I’m the most realistic person in the world, NL. Thanks though.

Disagree about the Running Game

That was the difference for the Dolphins. They had 2 of the better RB in the league by far. Duel threat with two potential top rushers.

Lions of K Smith, who may or may not turn out to be a good RB.

Foote visited today

The Ticket is reporting that Foote has already visited the Lions and left this afternoon. No news has come out about how the talks went, and Foote hasn’t returned any messages. But he visited today.

by giggy09 on May 5, 2009 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

They told him

Larry, you’re a great guy. You’re a great fit for our organization. And we know you want to play here, we do. But we would truly rather underachieve then provide our fanbase any sort of an ‘energizing’ pick up.

Do you have any friends who play OLB or possibly large safetys who would like to play here?

by Nate D. on May 5, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah...

LaMarr Woodley and Troy Polamalou fit those areas

by ralphgoblue on May 5, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to say it...

In the headline, “visit” is spelled “vist”.

by AZ Yooper on May 5, 2009 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

Az Yooper...

A “vist” is what happens when a good player visits the Lions and does not get signed or play. See below for examples.

Aaron Curry visted the Lions and told them he would take less money to play for them.

Barry Sanders made his last vist to the Lions facility, despite the fact that he still had some football in him.

by damnitdamnitdamnit on May 5, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

????

Did I misspell? Sean must have fixed it because it looks right now.

If I did… I am certainly sorry and humbly ask for your undeserving forgiveness.

by DrewsLions on May 5, 2009 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That's right...

You better ask for forgiveness!!! :)

I know, it’s a lame thing to point out in the comments, but I couldn’t help myself.

The Lions offered Foote a contract but he has yet to sign
